I also tried the .142 set...didn't care for them at all. Way to floppy feeling for me, and had no real punch. I couldn't get my DR's back on quick enough!

Oh, they are floppy? That is not something I really wanted to hear though I am not sure I really have any other options since my D'Addario's are feeling pretty floppy themselves lately. I might just bit the bullet and give the Circle K's a shot and see what I think.

The ReBop is a seriously awesome bass. I love them. PJ picks at me because I'm so Pro-ReBop. But it's an affordable way to get into a true NS-Body Spector. They have great feeling necks and sound awesome. I mean honestly, drop some EMG DC's in one of these and I like the way it sounds A LOT!

I am sooo glad to hear this. I just scored a Rebop 5 for a steal of a deal and I am planning on popping in a set of DCs.

One question, is the stock preamp compatable with the active DCs?

If so, is that hiss/hum still present with the treble up?

The Stock Pre which should be a Tonepump will work with DCs.

In another thread someone asked if people like the EMG TW pickup. I posted that other than the volume drop when going from dual coil to single coil I liked them. Someone then posted that the X series TW pickups didn't have the volume drop. Is that true?

This bass Gene has for sale was actually built for Stuart's attorney. As you can see the wood is an incredible 5A quilt.

For those of you that don't know Gene, his has the largest collection of Spector 5 strings from the Kramer era. His is a incredibly honest and trustworthy guy. This is a great deal if you ever wanted to explore a USA Spector 6 string!

Thanks! I am really excited about it! I have heard the wait is 4-5 months for anything coming out of the US shop. I probably could have cut a bit off that time, as they had a a body already cut, routed and ready to go. I would have jumped on it, but it was already routed for soap bars and I really wanted the sound/look of traditional jazz style pickups.

Most guys lower the pups a bit till they like what they hear. just sayin....

This is definitely beyond a pickup height adjustment issue. I'm leaning toward a new pump with 2 batteries. I ran a BT at 18V years ago and it made a subtle, but definitely noticeable improvement in headroom and dynamics.

Has anyone else used Circle K strings on their Spector? I ordered a balanced tension set with a .142 B-string (same tension as a .106 E-string) for my Rex 5 and after about two weeks I really like them. The tapered B and E seemed to have fixed some of the problems I was previously having with the B-string, and the balanced tension is really amazing. The D and G are considerably lighter than most sets and the B-string is considerably heavier. This actually makes it really easy to play, and the strings sound great. Not as bright as Stainless Steel strings, but certainly not overly thumpy or muddy. Anyway, I really love these strings.

Anyone else tried Circle K's?

I know Spector_Boogie uses them and he is a huge fan. I am actually going to order a set tomorrow to try out since I am currently using a customized D'Addario set with a .145 B string that I tune down to A and it seems like it's getting a bit floppy compared to what it used to be when I first got them. I plan on getting the .158 traditional set that has the .118 E string since I want to drop that down to C every now and then.

Correct. CK's are all I play, and this is coming from a lifelong DR user. The reason they take some getting used to for some folks, is that we've had to deal with basically strings "the wrong way" for so long. This was the first time I'd heard of this balanced tension stuff, and it totally makes sense when you stop and think about it.
Also, while the gauges look big on paper, once you get them in and installed it makes total sense and it just feels natural.
The "floppyness" thing is a pretty much complete joke, so don't worry about that. mmbongo is a pretty big and shameless shill for a string sales company (who doesn't sell CK's, amazingly ) and IMO was probably one of the biggest whiners about Skip actually being on the board to field questions and more than likely was someone who PM'd mods about his just helping out customers but made it seem like he was "promoting" his own stuff. But Skip took the high road and now we all get to suffer for it. But he's a troll-ish guy for all things CK (mmbongo), so YMMV. Amazingly he only showed up in this thread once CK's were mentioned... hrmmm... :scowl: The Strings section kinda have some backup for this behavior.

So yeah, the last thing they are is "floppy", but you do need to get an accurate set for what you wanna do. It's pretty easy. Just email Skip and he'll get back to you asap.

We tune drop C and I go ACGCF. I use the .124 drop set for the CGCF strings, and a custom .158 for my A, but will probably go with a .150 next time. It's pretty much changed the way I play forever. I'm not sure what I'll do when/if they go outta business. If I tuned standard or close to it, I could go more "off the shelf" stuff but if you tune down at all, IME (and these eat the DDT's for breakfast/lunch/tea/dinner, not even a contest) it's really the only way to go, IMO. It's awesome that you can have your ADG strings a step down and they can still bend, stay in tune, and actually are playable unlike going with the BEAD string approach and "tuning" up which makes most instruments unplayable.

I wouldn't say they're floppy, although they are more flexible than some other strings and if you aren't used to balanced tension, the high strings will probably feel a bit loose. The nice thing about Circle K's though is they have a pdf of all the string tensions on their website, so you can choose a set with exactly the tension you want. For me, the .142 set works great, the tension is the same across the string as a flexible .105 E string. Admittedly though, I'm not a fan of super high tension. I would just check out the tension chart here and pick your gauges from there: Link Removed

My wife had to have surgery on her ankle on Saturday. The bone didn't mend well at all after the first 2 weeks in the cast so they had to put in a plate. So it's back to square one.

I haven't been playing much over the last couple of weeks...trying to work full time and taking care of everything at home leaves me tired and with no time at all.
I managed to get a friend to come over and look after my wife so I finally had my first jam with the band last night and MAN that felt good!!!!!!!! Hearing the bass through the amp was very healing to me. I just stood there and sustained notes for a while with my head close to the amp...

Also, we booked our first show on June 7th!!! I'm already nervous!
We're playing 6 songs from our set list. Opening for a local band. The venue is pretty small, 200 people, but it's a beauty! Can't wait!!

I hope to be able to visit the thread more often now that things are a bit calmer...

In the meantime, I was playing around with my new to me Mesa 400+ and my Hazlab'ed - white EuroLX and recorded a little ditty. I was happy with the bass tone. Let me know what y'all think.

2006'ish EuroLX with Hazlab US9V, Old DR Hi-Beams, into a Mesa bass 400+ into an Aguilar GS212 miked with an SM57.
