Yes, that was the issue. I switched the two outside terminals on the jack (Typical Switchcraft style cannon as used by Spector) and all has been fine since then.

Nope. Not on mine. No red wires involved at all.

Blue wire (second wire in from corner) as shown on Tone Pump diagram should be on jack's center terminal.
When looking at the jack's terminals, turned so that the center terminal is closer to the bottom edge:
Black from the battery clip should be soldered to the left jack terminal.
Black from the Tone Pump (about the 3rd wire in from the corner) should be soldered to the right terminal.

This is all based on a recent trim-pot Tone Pump. I know wire colors and layout have changed several times with this preamp over the years (both trim and non-trim versions alike).

Yep that sounds right. Mine are red on 2 of my basses lol. I had them switched once.

Yeah. It's alright, but you really have to use it lightly to get good sounds with it. I pretty much leave it flat all the time. For a grindy sound I'll put the treble at like 60% and the bass at 40%. It's not the best pre, but it's workable. Set flat, i'd say it has kind of a stingray- ish Slight mid bump kind of growl to it. I'm still able to make my legends sound pretty darn good. It's possible that the one he played had a low battery though, the treble on mine doesn't get all that hissy unless it's all the way up.

+1...I agree, you just need to find the right combo to find what works for you i.e. strings, adjusting pup vol., boosting/de-boosting treble/bass. When I had my legend 4, it made a gigantic improvement replacing the graphite nut with a brass nut. It added more balls to the over all tone! Haha! If I didn't prefer a neckthru to bolt-on necks, I'd still have it today. It was an awesome bass to play. Just needed adjustments.

Hey folks. I just got paid with another bass again. Still off of Amazon, this time it's a white NS-2JA-R. It's the only one they had left in stock, and the only one in the price range of what this guy was willing to spend since the Euros on Amazon aren't at the lowered/discounted prices anymore.

Could someone lay out the history of this series for me? I think there were only 83 made or something, though that's not indicated by the numbering on the back of this one, and it's a Czech made bass. Was the reissue an American bass and this is just a Czech version of it or was the whole endeavor a Czech-based series? How many were black, white and natural? It's a really great bass and a totally different feel and sound than an NS-2 neck through, but still has the Spector character. But it's lighter, has a much different neck feel, and the Jazz set-up provides a totally different take on the Spector tone. I really like it. Plus I'm a sucker for the Bad-Ass bridge - it's such a great piece of equipment.

I am basically waiting for the last Euro LX5 to get here from Amazon before I go ahead and list everything I have to sell on TB. I've decided to get rid of everything and keep only 3 basses: the Forte 5, the white Wimbish (at least I'm planning to, it still hasn't come yet), and one other (most likely this JAR). The rest are going to go including my "never sell" MTD 535. The Forte has taken it's place. While it weighs more, it sounds better (as far as the ideal 5 string tone in my head goes) so it's going to replace the MTD.

So I'll be listing a new black cherry flame Euro LX 4, a new quilt ultra amber Euro LX 5 (I have a second one of these, but someone has already called dibs on it), a used Ian Hill in black (I just can't get into it as much as I'd hoped and I also can't justify the cost of keeping it), and a used MTD 535 tulipwood, flamed myrtle, wenge neck/fb. I'm probably going to keep the Wimbish and the JAR since they are very different basses. Those and the Forte 5 make 3 and that's more than I'd hoped for.

If anyone here on the Spector board is interested in any of these, please let me know in a PM. As I mentioned, I have one of the new Euro LX 5's set aside for someone and am willing to do this for anyone else in the Spector family as well. Otherwise, as soon as I have all of these under my roof, have pics, and they've been professionally set up and ready to go, I will post everything in the classifieds and try to continue to crawl my way out of the medical bills.

It is nice to get paid in gear, but the novelty wears off pretty fast when you need the money much more than you need/want the gear. This particular customer is a really nice guy, but uses the Amazon credit he has amassed to pay off certain service providers (mostly small independents like me) in materials rather than cash because it's easier on his business that way since the Amazon money is already spent. It makes sense, and I totally empathize, but it's not always the best thing since I can't send Northside Hospital a new Euro LX 4 and have them say "thanks! the bass kicks ass! We'll knock this much off your bill for it, see you next month."

Anyway, I rant. Sorry. Hope everyone is having a good weekend and let me know if you're interested in anything I mentioned.

Oh and if you know anyone who's looking for anything like what I'm trying to sell, please, please send them my way. As some folks here on the board already know, I'm really easy to deal with and I'll go out of my way to try and make everything great for my buyers, plus I'll try to be as flexible as I can when it comes to price.

Do you know if it has the crown inlays or just the dots? The reason I ask is I have that exact bass which was made in 2001 and it has that dots. That bass is just amazing even stock but then I had Sam (Limaguy) install a trim pot tonepump and EMG DC's which turned that bass into a beast.

Sam has had my bass for the last few weeks since we didn't have time to finish the install when I went over his house last but he also installed a brand new Euro bridge which he said made the thing even better. The original bridge on it was all beat up and missing screws but the new Euro bridges they sell seem to be similar to the USA bridges and are heavier which is a good thing for sustain.

He recorded clips of all my 5 string Spectors in case you want to hear the differences:

Actually, it doesn't include my newest NS-JH5 so I need to get clips of that too but I am not happy with the strings I have on it now so I am going to change them tomorrow.

Ok, now you've gone and done it! That 3rd sound clip is exactly what I'm after (NS-5 with 18 volt Haz and DCs). I could probably go out and spend about $5000 on a brand new USA NS-5XL but I'd be in the dog house for a long time if the wife found out. So what's the cheap back door approach to that sound - i.e. buy the Haz preamp and DC pickups and install them in any NS body style Spector? I suspect there's more to it than that.
I do have a REX5 Pro neck thru I love the sound and feel of, it's so perfect as is I'd hate to mod it but would consider it as long as the mod was reversible and got me very close to your clip 3.

Correct, leave the Volume and Balance and remove the EMG Bass and Treble Pots.
The Tonepump Pots you need are standard 100K and 10K Taper audio pots.

Also, here is a photo of how I have the 2 batteries in my cavity.

Anyone have a good source for the 10k and 100k pots? I'm looking around and having trouble finding that. Even Stew Mac doesn't have both of those sizes.

really? I had ssd pups in my performer dlx. they were really midrangey. I went from ssd pups and no pre to HZs and a non trim tonepump and did very much prefer the hzs and TP. But I wouldn't say the SSDs were dull... maybe they don't play nice with active pres.....

My Legend 4 if anything was a lot mid range and very bright. I contribute that mostly to the brass nut and possibly the GHSPrecision SS FW strings.

I'd say either look for a nice used NS-5 as it'd be less expensive and mod it, order a new NS-5 thru either Bass Central or Guitar House of Tulsa, they both will give you an awesome deal, or buy a Forte 5, as it's a NS-5 but not as fancy without the cown inlays and gold hardware, but has all the excellent craftsmanship hand build and awesome tone. You can order the Forte 5 with the Haz and choice of pups too, for half the price of a NS-5.
