I've had the same shipping experiences as brotherbassj.

Those quotes are are inline with what I've found from either Fed Ex or UPS.

Are you guys using your own personal accounts... or are you piggy backing on a business/work account?

I regularly pay $60-$100 to ship a bass from California to the East Coast... Florida, Boston or New York. That's with me packing it myself in a 50x20x8 U-Line box... or smaller if I have one. Shipping weight is usually 20-28 pounds. FedEx is always a few bucks less than UPS.

However, Fed Ex only covers "declared value" up $1000. If you have a higher value you must purchase shipping insurance from another party.

It cost me $103 to ship my Forte from California to North Carolina insured for $1850 via UPS.

I go directly to corporate owned stores otherwise you pay even more at the Ma n' Pa or "Postal Annex" places.

Here's a FedEx quote right from the website:

From: San Diego, 92119, United States | To: New york, 10001, United States on July 5, 2012.

2. Package and Shipment Details: 1 package, 25.00 lbs, Your Packaging, 50 in x 20 in x 8 in, 1000.00 USD.

3. Rates and Transit Times
End of day(4 Business Days) FedEx Home Delivery® $69.82

That's what a "regular Joe" has to pay if they don't have a business or work account. More expensive bass + UPS = even higher shipping charges.

Yep, that's pretty much what I'm seeing on most of my shipments as well. I normally figure about $75 give or take $25 depending on size, weight, insurance, speed and distance.

I'm retired;
I primarily use PayPal for shipping since that's where the money is for the payment, they have correct address and other information.
I have been doing this for over 10 years. Nothing special here?

Someone finally emailed me about the MTD. They're offering $3000 plus covering shipping (about $125 - hard case so it's a heavy b&^ch). It's lowball by a few hundred, but really - in this used market is anyone going to come up with $3400? If they come through and I take it, I could also return the Forte 5 to GC and get my $1499 back from them, and just keep the incoming no-drip Alex Webster as my 5 string. This way, I have can save a ton of money, get a lot of money back, and still come out with a great 5 string Spector to go along with the JAR and the incoming white Wimbish/1.5" LX (whatever the hell it turns out to be).

I know I will NEVER get a Forte 5 for $1499 new ever again (or the chances are at least quite slim), but if I am honest, the bass is a bit heavy for me (that is the ONLY downside to this instrument as icebox will attest) and though it sounds heavenly, I may be able to emulate a lot of that tone in the Webster (same pickups, even better preamp) which will be a bit lighter on the shoulder. Plus the Webster is free/I worked for it so there is no expenditure there.

So it will leave me with the Amazon LX4 and 5 to sell, but I will be able to get a bunch of money back on the MTD and Forte 5 that I need for bills. And in the end, I'll still have my line up of two different Spector 4s and a great Spector 5 to enjoy, which was the goal at the beginning anyway.

Advice, opinions and ideas from my Spector family are welcome and needed, so please... what do you guys think?

BTW as a total aside: - the JAR with EMG X series J's and the smadder set up is just about as close to heaven as a modern jazz bass can get (IMO). Still sounds Spectory, but definitely has it's own thing too. Couldn't be happier and it's a very unique instrument to own.

Steve - That sounds like a great plan to get further medical bills paid down...but, if you send back the Forte 5 to GC for refund, have you consider selling it to a club member? I bet it'd go fast! So would the Webster! My Forte 5 weighs 10#'s exactly...it's so well balanced I really don't notice it. My former NS-95 SSD was heavier. How much does the Webster weigh? Just a thought. :)

I have shipped numerous basses long distances (from here in MA to washington state was the farthest) and the most I ever paid was like $45 via UPS. Have you guys ever tried using USPS? I used UPS for a while but USPS is often cheaper for me lately, if slower by maybe a day tops, and they've always arrived in perfect shape.

It played amazing and sounded great too, and made me consider putting some Chromes on the Rex. I just don't know if they would sound clear or bright enough for slapping/tapping/solo stuff I like doing.

Thanks for the set-up tips as well, I think I may need to tighten the truss rod a little bit, I'm just worried that it will buzz at the low frets if I tighten it.

I do have D'Addario chrome flats on it now. I had the same setup with the power slinkies. That's where one of the differences I noticed with the USA build basses. Same with my former Forte 4. When I first picked up the Forte 4 from the case, I never thought it possible to have strings that low! As exclaimed on "My Spector Story".
Sure would like to see some more " My Spector Story's" from our club! HINT HINT!!! Haha! :D

I always have a couple original Spector shipping boxes stored to use later. That is one heavy duty looking box!
