I have many examples of the one like I just posted all less than 50 bucks all insured, the one I posted with the picture was insured for 1700.00 bucks.
I don't use Fed-ex mainly because the closest drop-off is 14 miles one way, I can certainly see I'm not missing anything by not using them based on what they charge you.

Try UPS, I would think you would get a better price?

Might be because I'm in Memphis, but 9 times out of 10 Fedex is at least $10 cheaper for me than UPS.

Agreed. I sent a guitar insured for full value to Alaska from Boston via Fedex Ground, and I don't think that it cost more than $45. I've found them to have the best prices for shipping heavy/awkward stuff, by far.

Incidentally, I recommend the big guitar shipping boxes from uline.

I ordered some of the acoustic guitar boxes recently, and they're plenty big enough for a bass in a hardshell case. That way you don't have to do some crazy uhaul-box origami to make up a legitimate shipping container. The downside is that you have to buy a minimum of 5 at a time. Still, I don't think it's a bad deal, esp. if you have to ship a bass without a case.

... My shipping costs for cross country bass with case have always been closer to $75. The key differences and what drives the cost up quick are the things noted above. I typically will ship for saturday delivery if necessary (hate to see a nice bass sit in a truck or warehouse any longer than it has to). I typically declare the value at replacement cost vs sale price since either the buyer or the sender is going to end up paying for a replacement if serious damage is done, and that may cost more than the great deal offered in the sale. But most important is the size of the box. I can't imagine how a bass with hard case double boxed and adequately padded could be fit into a 6" wide box. I almost always end up with a 60"long x 24"tall x 16"wide box and that adds a lot of cost.

I used those boxes in the past when I was shipping the bass in a case, they are too thin to ship a bass by itself (for me) which is 90% of the time.

When I sold my blue CRFM it costed $96 from Buffalo to San Franciso. It was to an APO address in Korea but it's price was still CONUS. I went through USPS (obviously to ship to an APO address). It took me forever to find a big box. I packed it big because it was going across country, and then over an ocean. ;)

I was trying to help figure out a way for you guys save some money, I don't pay those prices and can load a whole page to show it.
I only time I ever paid over 50 bucks is when I had someone else box it and ship it. (only once)

... I need to find out what kind of shipping materials you use. A typical solid body bass hard case is going to be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches thick, add 2" of foam on each side of that, then drop it in a primary box, then add 2 more inches of foam around that in drop it in a secondary box and you're somewhere between 14" and 16" wide.
Your first example listed a 6" width and this example lists an 8" width. Either you've got some fantastically strong boxing material or you're using the hard case as the primary container and boxing it with little or no padding. That's not unheard of, nearly every new bass I've purchased via mail order comes that way. But I've had too many close calls on stuff I've recieved where the secondary box is torn or damaged and I cringe when I see how lucky I got that the bass wasn't damaged.

That bass was shipped with no case (which is generally the case) fronted and backed with cardboard wrapped with many layers of bubble wrap.
