SPECTOR® Club - Part 37

Here's pics of all 3 basses: the LX4, the Webster no drip, and the Forte5.

The LX4 has a cool top (with usual alder body and walnut slice between): kind of flamed, kind of quilted. It's really nice. Plus it's got X series PJs and the 2 band EMG BTS system wired to 18v (a spin on the smadder setup - thought I'd try for something different). I'm selling this for $1150 shipped. It's new straight from Amazon and has only been touched by my tech for a setup and the electronics upgrades.

The Alex Webster no-drip is completely stock: black finish, slim profile (front to back) neck, ebony fretboard with red crown inlays, maple top with alder back and walnut slice between, red Spector logo on the headstock, dual EMG 40DC humbuckers and an 18v BQC variable mid circuit with the battery boxes on the outside. It's new from Amazon as well and hasn't been touched at all except for me playing it a bit. I'd like to sell this for $1500 shipped:

The USA Forte 5 is solid flamed maple body wings with high figuring, I guess what you'd call a satin charcoal stain on the body and neck, black hardware including a USA brass bridge, pau ferro fretboard w/ no inlays, EMG 40DC pickups, and the smadder set up of an EMG BTC 2 band preamp with an EXB variable mid boost knob. I got this from GC used for $1499 (they must have screwed up) so I would sell it for $1550 to cover part of the shipping costs. It's worth a lot more than this, but that's what GC gave it to me for.

All of these will come with a new Spector gig bag (except the Forte which comes with a Spector hardshell case) and they also all have the heavier, brass-lined EMG control knobs rather than the standard plastic ones. The pics of the Forte are before I changed the electronics so it still shows plastic knobs but doesn't have them anymore. I'm going to take the weekend and decide which 5 string I want to keep, the Webster or the Forte, but I wanted to put everything up here on the family thread to let you know what I had for sale.

I'm not sure of the input sensitivity of the iNuke but in my experience the Tech 21 pedals (BDDI, VT Deluxe & Oxford) didn't fully drive my power amp. (Carvin HD1500 & DCM600) It still sounded great but depending on the volume you need it may or may not get loud enough for you. I also had Mike at Putnum guitars add a mid control to BDDI and it definately helped with the mid-scoop some seem to find with it. Great pedal though.:D

Putnam guitars!? In Lockport,NY? I had my Ampeg SVT-III Pro biased by him. He'll probably be doing more work for my amp and cabinet soon. Great guy. I literally live 20 minutes from there. :bassist:

And just to put it out there, if anyone wants any of these in particular, it may help sway my decision on which 5 to keep, so please PM me if you're interested in any of them. They're all insane deals, and two of them are new out of the box. the Forte you can barely tell has been used (at least, I can't tell it's been used). So all of these are great at the prices listed. And I'm willing to work with folks to within reason. So just let me know. As Tony (ynot12), Chuckles (WilsonMusic) and Jaymi will attest, I really try to go out of my way to take care of the people who buy from me.

I'm so completely confused about what to do now.

I'm just going to give it the weekend since I have to go out of town anyway and think it over.

not only go with the tones but go with how they feel/play in your hands. Which one feels more natural to you when you playing it. :) which one feels like home. :D

Suspense is killing me...according to Fedex I will have my NS-2A tomorrow, can't wait!

I'll wait to post pics (technically Jaymi already posted a bunch before shipping it to me) until I've decided whether to swap the pickups or not...but I am definitely leaning towards it cause it would be so sweet to have the Dimarzio pickups used in the first NS-2's paired with the (korean haz-copy) Spector 9V tone control!

My guess is the reason the tone is similar on both is because you have EMG pre's in both basses. Sure the different woods and all but that BQC really has a ton of different tones you can dial in with it. I assume you can probably do something similar with the BT and EXB setup as well.

That is a tough call to choose between the Forte 5 or the Alex Webster. Do like you said and give it the weekend and I think one will start to stand out a bit better than the other. What an awful position to be in though :) Good luck.

i say go for it! not many here have tried different pups... I tried some SD pups and didn't like them, mmbongo is using a bart(I think) in his us bo.

Thanks John, I think you make some really good points on why the tone is so close. If I keep the Webster, I'm probably going to smadder setup the thing and sell the BQC afterwards. I just don't need the onboard mid control, and I find the EXB circuit to be highly addictive (like Spectors in general)

I'm also going to take the Web to my tech on Tuesday when I get back and have him do a complete set up. It's a bit rumpled from shipping in the heat, so it will give me a better sense of which bass suits me better. But I can tell you I'm leaning towards the Webster. After two spine surgeries and 13 abdominal surgeries since 2005, I really don't have any business carrying around a 10 pound bass. So I need to consider that as well, even though I wish I didn't have to. So hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday of next week, I will have a decision. Either way, it's really cool to be in a position to have to decide :smug:

If you rip that BQC out, I would buy that from you if the price is right :) I really need to get rid of this OBP-1 in my NS-JH5 and was most likely going to put a BQC in it. I just do not like the tone of this OBP-1 in this USA bolt-on.

Yeah the obp-1 is not a favorite. Brittle, brittle treble. I'd sell the bqc for probably $65 shipped which is less than half of new. Would you be cool with that? Let me know and I'll decide later next week on all of it.
