I recently finished my JAR project. I was very excited about the JAR. The NS-2JA was one of my dream basses in the late eighties. Because of the limited availability I had never actually played a JAR until I got mine from Donny who got it from Sam:). First thing I noticed was how club like the neck felt. I have small hands. Very round and substantial. The width felt very P bass. Overall like an old P bass neck on steroids. With even bigger string spacing. During the refin project I had my guy (Phil Jacoby) shave the neck. He removed a good amount of material. I have never played a Wimbish so I dont know how it compares to that. Jaymi has an original NS2-JA, he mentions it having a considerably thinner(front to back) profile than the reissue. With the clubishness gone, it now feels great. Now to the plugged in sound. I am not a fan of the BT circuit. I think it was a mistake to include it the JAR. Too polite. Too thin. The people who decided to put it in the JAR are a lot smarter than me, so I am sure they had their good reasons. I put the Tonepump circuit in my JAR and it sounds fantastic. The low end response is massive. A lot more Spector a lot less EMG. All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

And on another note, I took a trip to a local GC with my guitarist and drummer, and ended up scoring an awesome used sansamp BDDI (not a mark on it!) for $100. Pretty darn good day so far!

I really wanted to buy that JAR when Sam was selling it but I just didn't have the funds available. I am probably one of the few but I just love the feel of fatter necks and the JAR that Sam sold was one of the only 4 string basses that felt comfortable in my hands. People always ask me why I only own 5 string basses and the reason for this is the feel of the necks since they are the most comfortable to me.

Also, whenever Sam would record clips of all his basses at the time, I always loved the tone from the JAR the most out of all of them. This was before he bought his Forte and Kramer NS-2 though so that opinion will most likely have changed :) I would definitely love the pickup a JAR at some point when I start getting some money again.

You and I are in the same boat Johnny Boy. I love a big, thick neck. I also love the fact that I never have to touch the trussrod once I get my action dialed. Coming from EBMM's this is a good thing.

Speaking of necks, and I mentioned this earlier, I measures my 2 USA's and the Forte takes the "Big Neck Challenge" by the narrowest of margins. I'll get you your numbers soon Patrick.

Yeah, and I really wanted that NS-2J you bought used from GC Lee but after hearing that it didn't cut through too well, I backed down from that one. That one had a monster neck also, didn't it?

You reminded me also that i need to buy that caliper to measure the necks :) I bought a bunch of different things to work on my basses this weekend but that was one thing that i forgot. I think Patrick measured my NS-5XL when he had it at his place after NAMM but I am curious how my others stack up against it.

Yeah it was fat AND wide. The board width almost felt like a 5'er to me. Wide spacing and I reckon' if I slapped more I'd be in heaven.

With the band it did cut but it didn't have the same girth as the PJ's. It also "sat" in a different spot in the frequency spectrum. I like my spot just where it is now and the Euro, Forte and NS 2 do just fine sliding in there.

If I had disposable money I'd still have it. The most amazing thing was the weight! It was like 7 pounds and change! I so wanted it to be The One...

Husky brings up a good point that I forgot in talking about the JAR. It is Light. Or perhaps I should say the one I have is light. 8.1 lbs. Which for a Spector is like a feather. Perhaps because of the weight it balances better than any other Spector I have ever played. The body is also thinner than the neckthroughs. I guess you can tell I have become a JAR convert. Though it would be nice to say that I was an NS2 JA convert. One day, for sure.

What other basses are some of you gassing over that I may have already had? I can dispell myths and GAS--ESPECIALLY with some of the now-higher-priced ones....

If you have the money and you don't have to move a lot of valued,personally valued instruments then by all means experiment with what you want. However, if you don't like it, in the current economy its hard to move instruments and very few people have a spare 1000 versus five or six times that amount.

I can't see buying a Wal personally for the cost alone.....but if you have loads of cash and no other financial responsibilities.......go for it. I think you could get a few Spector at good used prices for the cost of a Wal. I went on a tone quest......hell I'm still on it......but I always found myself coming back to a certain brand.

Do what out gotta do man. Or don't do it. If I had enough to buy a Wal I think id buy a couple other bases and bank the rest though! LOL

+1! I can say beyond any doubts that since playing Spectors the last 3+ years, I haven't heard any othe basses brands out there that even stirs a little any interests for me. Thank you Stuart and everyone that is involved in the building process! :D :bassist::hyper::cool:
