That white SSD 5-string is the ****. Wow - very tough to resist. Thankfully I sold a bass recently and have another that I can move so I'm going after my first choice. One thing seems certain - I will add another Spector to the herd in the next week or two.

Deluca, you would seriously tempt me with your blue Euro 5. For some reason I actually like how that looks more than the blue NS-5XL I picked up earlier this year.

Question - does the SSD NS-5 have the same preamp as used today on the NS-5XL? I read somewhere it's an 18-volt - just wasn't sure if it was the 18 volt Haz or not.

I believe the white whale has 2 18volt HAZs one for the pups and one for the piezo

You are correct! Dave told me that both run off an 18V circuit! It is a gorgeous bass...just a bit too heavy for me. If' it were 9.5 lbs, it'd already be on lay-a-way!

I'm considering looking for a Spector, but I'm not sure if it's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something that can be picked up used maybe in the $600-$700 range. Are there any good Spector models that can be gotten for that? How are the necks on them?

That's what the HAZ does to you live. So much more impressive than Memorex.

You can find a nice quality Spector for that $$!

NS-2A's are always floating around ($400-$550) and are awesome for the price!

Legends are good as well as the NS-94's!

I guess my question is - do I need to replace the pots? I'm ASSUMING that I'd be required to change out the regular 500k volume / tone pots for EMG's 25k Ohm pots. But what about the other two preamp pots? Do those need to be changed to 25k as well? I wouldn't think so, but just not sure.

Also, do I need to replace the jack? I'm assuming no on that one, since the battery is already wired to it.

So while I'm on the topic, lets say I swapped out the Volume pots for the 25k Ohm EMG pots.
A) Is this possible?
B) would it act more as a volume knob rather than a on/off?

The pots that came stock on this preamp are obviously Linear Taper as opposed to Audio Taper, like the EMG pots are. Far as I know. That, or they're just not meant for active PUs....

Yes, this one has two USA 18V (Haz) preamps that share a pair of 9V batteries.

The controls for the two EMG DC40s are the same (and in the same position) as the NS-5XL: Volume, Blend, Stacked Bass/Treble.

The controls for the piezo are the two knobs closest to the bridge: Balance piezo/magnetic, Stacked Bass/Treble.

If the piezo ever failed you would still have a fully functional NS-5XL.

Just to add to my last post.

Since I didn't post a picture for the start of a new thread, here is one showing the Spector's I currently have and when looking at that, there is no way I can part with any of them.

I think a certain "pale aquatic mammal" would look extra sweet sitting on that couch!
