Hey Steve,

What a great predicament we all are in! Do I go with the Ferrari today or the Lambo? That's how I look at it anymore with these Spector's. Like I've said before they're all separated by slivers of awesomeness.

Anyway, back to your predicament....I like what you have come up with. I'd stick the 18V with the DC's and the 9V with the P/J. Rich is right, the 18V / DC combo with lower tunings is unreal. I never expected it to be this good. However the 9V with a P/J setup is THEE tone. It just flat slays. Go with your plan and you'll have all your basses covered and never bored with your tone. You'll have the entire spectrum covered IMO.:bassist:

Supes, Chris, Lee, Sam and anyone else who has experiences with both the usa 18 and 9 volt circuits in any Spector model, be it standard appointments on US NS series basses, or Euros or Fortes with custom upgrades to those preamps. I need some insights from my family here in choosing which US preamp I want for each of my three "keeper" Spectors. I've already talked extensively with Jaymi about it and I'd like your take as we'll, if you don't mind.

I've been tossing around the idea of putting a USA 9v in all three of my Spectors. This week I realized that I recall pj and Patrick explaining at some point in past threads that the us 18 v circuit was developed specifically for three main reasons: accommodating the wider and more powerful output of EMGs dual coil, wide aperture humbuckers, accommodating the frquency demands of a low B string more accurately than the 9v, and also powering the EMG humbuckers at a full 18v for better headroom and complete exploitation of the frequency range of the EMGs built in preamps. So I was thinking, perhaps I should get the 18v for my Euro 4 with the twin DCs and another for my five with the twin DCs. Then put a 9v in the white p/j NS-2 style Euro I'll end up with eventually.

I've gotten Jaymi's perspective on this choice. As someone who's experienced both, what would you do? I know the two 18 and a 9 will also save me a big chunk of change, but ignore that for now. I'd rather find out what you would choose if you we're me and were dealing with these particular models.

Thanks everyone in advance for the feedback. I'll also, keep you up to date on the return of the Wimbish neck LX. Beaver has promised me that his plan for swapping this bass out will lead to this: "you WILL smile at the end of this deal. Trust me." In the almost 14 years I've known him and been his client, I've never had him promise me something and not come through one way or the other, so I don't take that kind of statement lightly. I'm actually kind of excited to see what his solution idea is and it's overshadowing my disappointment in the bass. I was just so caught up in having a brand new white Spector that was finally mine to keep and then after the dazzle factor wore off and I really examined the bass while changing strings and noticed all the problems. But Beaver's quick response and promise to make it right is very reassuring. Lets see what happens.

Steve
My thoughts. but you already know this.....lol

Went back to edit this. I have been having this type of conversation with Steve and Jaymi. I am beginning to think that my "dream Spector" involves:

4 strings
Matte finish
EMG DCs

Spector USA 18 Volt pre, with a kill switch or dummy knob

The 18 volt to me has been described as clean clear and powerful with great deep bass response and a glassy top end. I played the most recent 9 volt and it sounded a bit grindy to me.....I prefer clarity and headroom. I will get my grit from a pedal if needed.....

This is what I believe will make me happy. Especially if it comes in emrald green.......ah.....

In with Burl...

had my eye on a USA Spector but a killer deal on a damn Alembic happened along the way. Looks like I'll have to shed some of my less used gear to get the next Spector.

I am going to put the 18v in the Rebop 5 and take the DC's out of the DK-5 to hear what the DC's sound like with the 18. Then I am going to take the 18 out and see what the BQC sounds like. Afterwards I will try the 40P/j, 40P/DC with both pre's.

To me the 9volt and the BQC in my 4 strings are compared to a tube amp and a SS. It's personal preference, I love the 9v and am not a clean kind of guy. My two LTD's with DC's and BQC sound like pianos. I am curious to what the 18v will do in the Rebop.

Ah... yes the Emerald Green is a awesome color. I have been looking at the green Wimbish at BC for a while. I am torn between a few colors at the moment, but the Wimbish is the new move I am going to make.

You should consider the Crown Macro Tech series. There is a reason they are a standard in the concert sound biz. Best amps ever built. You know how you go to a concert and the bottom end is moving an extraordinary amount of energy? Its not in the speakers, its in the amps and thats what these amps do. They have made a million of these and you can always find them used.

Looks like I'm getting a 2x15 possibly? :D

If so, I'll be picking up a bigger head. Carvin B2000 most likely, unless I can find a deal on a B1500 used.

the macrotech is an extremely nice poweramp I used a qsc rmx2450 for a while that I liked also

Killer rig.

i can finally say that after 2-3 long years of deciding what I wanted to do rig wise, I'm all done for now. Was gonna pick up a Mesa BB750 but the two pre-power route is the more versatile sound IMO. I'm finally able to get the exact tone I've been looking for with the clean/dirty sans amps, and my Spector sounds BEAST through this rig, no joke.

The only thing I'm missing is another Spector :hyper:

I wouldn't say slays but, IMO, again in a band setting, the 1500 with its iron transformers just gut punches the crap out of you. The B2000 is certainly no slouch and I actually prefer its EQ points a tad better too. They both have more headroom than you could ever need.

What type of transformers does the B2000 have?

BTW: I'm currently rocking a B800. Killer head!

The b800 is the little brother to the b1500. I'm not sure about power transformers.....I play 215 berg with mine and tried the b2000. there is a thread somewhere on TB comparing the two. the b1500 has more umph ......live on a big stage it carries better than the b2000. you can hear and feel it....maybe no alone or in a small room but at a good venue it really opens up especially in a big room. believe me I wanted the b2000 to be its equal to save on carry weight... it just isn't....my 2 cents
