Quick question re preamps -

I have a Euro 4 LX with the trim pot tone pump pre. I sometimes feel that it sounds a bit scoopy and missing mids. Theres more bass and treble boost than i need on the tone pump. Has anyone transplanted an EMG BQC pre? It has the para mid adjustment that i think i need. Will it change the basic sound of the bass much or will it stay similar and just give me the added control i need?

With the BQC you can dial in any tone that you want, you just have to take the time to learn it and work with it. I believe that it is the most versatile pre available.

It's simply a review of the 35" scale Euro4LX-TW with the OPTIONAL B,E,A,D tuning.

If you visit the spec page for the Euro4LX-TW (right under the text you quoted), it says in two different places that the 35" and B,E,A,D tuning is an option...

And perhaps that needs to be more clear. The STOCK factory tuning for ALL 4 string Spector basses is standard tuning (E,A,D,G). The 35" scale option 4-string Euro4LX and Euro4LX-TW will come with E,A,D,G unless you ask for the B,E,A,D option, which had you purchased this from a dealer, the dealer would have discussed with you.

The bad thing is that regardless of the deal you got and even if it was still in its original packaging, your bass has no warranty because you are not the original owner. Smadder is. And once he resold the bass to you; the warranty is not transferrable. And Smadder is not an authorized Spector dealer. So he can't extend a warranty to you.

Steve is a great guy, don't get me wrong, but regardless if you felt the Nicki video was "misleading" and you're upset that your bass didn't come B,E,A,D when you thought it should... your bass is used, sold between two private parties. So any assistance you might have gotten through an Authorized Spector dealer, just doesn't exist with your new bass.

I sincerely appreciate the feedback on this. I see so much of this information on the models and their options, etc... that things that are probably not so clear to the average consumer (as you put it) are things I just automatically know.

So I'll work on changing that and making that more clear.

So, is this process just Spector putting on the correct gauge strings and a setup? What are you getting for 150.00? I have a Euro 4 34" setup for A with a .158 drop tune set. Taking the time to get the proper gauge and setting up the bass you can pretty much tune to whatever you want. Setup is the key you don't have to run as heavy of a gauge with a proper setup.

I'm about to put in an Aguilar OBP-3 in mine. I'll let you know the outcome. I do not like the Tone Pump, that much is certain.

so I'm thinking it's about time I unload some stuff and get an NS2 finally. I'm torn between two ideas. a Matte finish maple neck with the brown walnut wings, or a matte finish walnut stain on figured maple. other thoughts, beyond crowns, dots or no inlays, will Spector do any other inlays? I really liked the oval inlays they did on some US basses back in the SSD days.

There are several ways of looking at this.

First, I know a bunch of those artists who are touring with Legends and ReBops who have USA models at home for Studio work. Many simply feel their USA Spectors are to beautiful, too unique, to put through the rough and tumble world of touring.

Then there's cost. Guys like Chris Kael of Five Finger Death Punch... they play aggressively. They have aggressive fans... and when you can get the tone out of a Rex-Pro or Legend that you need... why not take three or four of those on the road and not worry about if they get messed up.

Dirty Ray of Bret Michaels Band once raised his bass in salutation at the end of a song not realizing there were steel industrial ceiling fans above him and he decapitated his Rex at the 3rd fret. What was so killer about this, besides the horrible noise it made, was that PJ Rubal was in the audience watching.


This is why Spector makes the lines they do.


So many of Spector's Artists actually have USA models but don't tour with them.

Exactly!!!! Perfectly said...Thats what I said months ago about a sacrificial lamb and someone said why have a US Spector and not take it out on some gigs?...Thats why....Certain places you are comfortable bring it others (low ceilings/tight stage/etc) leave it at home. :bassist:

I am so envious!!! That Top is smokin'! I have the same model, same finish and maple top, but the figuring on it doesn't hold a candle to that beauty of yours. Congrats!

It plays soooooo great out of the box, better than my ReBop for sure and it has sustain like... like... like nothing I have ever heard before. It's a dream, let me tell you.

Can't wait to get this thing on stage!

Excuse the crappy pictures, it's winter in Norway. I've already forgotten what the sun looks like.

I just bought one of these limited run USA NS2 walnut basses this week. Looks and plays fantastic, worth every cent. Not sure if you're looking for a bolt on or neck thru or how much you want to spend but these appeared to be the best bang for the buck on a new NS2. Sale price is quite a bit lower than list on these so if interested don't hesitate to connect with the store owner to see what kind of deal they'll give you.

The grain in that body is just breath taking! I've never been a big fan of black stain on figured wood but yours just changed my mind! Congratulations on a great purchase. Enjoy.

I'm so glad to finally see a Euro with no inlays. It gives me a chance to see how my fretboard will look since I ordered my Wimbish Spalted Maple Euro 4LX with no inlays, clear matte finish and black hardware. :D

With the setup above it'll sound like a USA Spector NS-4 with the 18v USA Spector circuit.

Quitin Berry's new signature Spector the NS-4Q has the OBP-2 at 18v and EMG DCs and when I did the old A-B with my Water Cured Redwood NS-4 the tone was so close it was really hard to tell them apart.

The OBP-2 is easy to setup with 4-knobs. The Spector Forte comes with the OBP-2 (at 9v and not 18).

So it's a 4-knob, Spector compatible circuit.

Thanks JPS. I'm still a little hesitant going the active route as the ones I've dinked around with were a bit on the sterile side. Does the OBP-2 give a bit more of that analog goodness that so many actives lack? I have yet to hear an Aggie product I don't like.

Also, should I start with just swapping the pre first to see if that fixes it, or is it better to plan the pre and pups at the same time?

I always think the pre is a good place to start. The OBP-2 and 3 get high praise from spector players.

Agree the US bolt ons are awesome basses. I'm leaning towards the neck thru with the good old hazlab PJ set up though.

Kinda leaning towards this type of set up.

I'm in the same boat. Still thinking about my Rebop 5 custom but the jazz body style is really catching my eye. I've been wanting a MIA fender 5 for a while but have decided against it due to hit or miss quality.
