Eddie, along with Johnny Lee Middleton, (bassist for the metal band Savatage), are the main reasons I, after 25 years of lusting for, finally, own a Spector NS-2.

I've somehow never listened to either of these guys (I'm young so sue me) despite listening to other bands from the era.

But maaaaaan that toooooone, I really need to get a tube head for some real OD so I can get something punchy and grungy similar to that delightful tone there.

I always loved Eddie's tone in Queensryche! Unfortunately I couldn't find that in my euro p/j basses, even one equipped with a modern 9 volt circuit. I am guessing I need a Kramer era ns2 or maybe even earlier. I do know my ears prefer the earlier circuit after playing both, maybe it's no different.....maybe it is? One day I will own an American ns2...... I might not keep it, but at least I owe that to myself?

Or maybe it's just me.....don't torch me over it, but I have yet to "get it" when it comes to the NS-2. My ears prefer the NS-4......no offense because apparently I'm in a club of 1 on that....lol

I know that Eddie had some speaker damage in the studio that helped his define his tone. I believe the story goes that they mic'd one of his woofers that was almost blown or damaged somehow and blended it with another mic'd cab and his direct tone. I also frequented a small music store in Redmond back in the day and bought one of his old Music Lord cabs. It was really cool being around Seattle back in the 90's. You'ld never know whose old gear would show up "gently" used....

Yeah if you've ever isolated his bass in Jammit you could almost believe that. By itself, it can be a little.....harsh but man oh man when you slide the rest of the faders up it goes so well in the mix.

I would never give anyone grief over their choice in basses, especially if that choice is a Spector. I still love my NS-4, and I play it every day. It was my 1st USA Spector, and it has a sound - and thunderous low end - like no other bass. I see the NS-2 and NS-4 as different weapons with overlapping missions. You really can't go wrong by choosing either model.

Oh yeah, there's some OD there. I can get my Euro LX with the BQC and PJ-X pups sounding close with the B3K dialed in. It's on my little GK MB112 II, so it might not sound quite so close on a big rig, but works nice for me.

My Woodstock NS-2 (strung with light gauge D'Addario ProSteels) through my EBS MicroBass pedal nails this sound exactly.
The Microbass has 2 channels - one with overdrive - and when dialed in, is the perfect compliment to an NS-2 or a Ric 4003. That pedal has finally allowed me to cop Geddy Lee, Chris Squire and Eddie Jackson tones to my complete & total satisfaction.

Man, that TONE, that tone. Every time I hear that early EJ stuff on Queensryche it gets me going. When he's banging that E there is nothing better......NOTHING. Dang I love these basses. Thanks SD for posting.

it was eddie jackson at first and then mike starr's tone really did it for me. too bad i cant afford that tone but im 75% with the tone pump in my ns94. it's close, but not as bad ass. love mike starr's tone especially on this song. so awesome!!!

Keep saving for that NS-2 my brother, and take heart in the knowledge that your setup does indeed give you about 90% of "The Sound", and at a fraction of the cost. My white Euro LX was my only Spector for many years, and I never lacked for killer tone in all that time.

Oh if only someone had a Kramer NS-2 available!

Not just any Kramer NS-2, but a Jeff & Andrew endorsed Kramer NS-2 in the Eddie Jackson approved, bad-ass black finish!


Someone needs to buy this - the temptation is more than my current financial situation allows, and it is a great bass from a great guy, with a rich club history & pedigree.

Eddie played a Lull 5 all night. No Spector, but he is such a great player. I know there are lots of fans in this club.

I saw QR last year just before Geoff left the band. Tesla (my favorite 80's band) opened. It was a great, great show, EJ was on and thunderous. EJ was playing his Lulls and they sounded great as well. I love Spector but will not bash his choice of Lulls, or ever say a bad word about anything Mike Lull. He's great guy who has done all my set-up work for 20 years. Treats a hack like me great even with all the gold and platnium albums on the wall of his shop.

I think Eddie is still recording that NS-2 though - there's a recent pic on the QR FB page showing it in the studio - a lot of paint is missing from the body.

I did read at one point one of his NS2's was stolen while out on tour. I don't think he wants to risk losing another one. I know his Lulls are nice basses but I would think they would be easier to replace than an old NS2. Especially since he can drive to Mikes shop when he's off tour.

May I ask how you're doing this & what you're using? I'm going to be stripping my P-bass down and, if things go well, my ReBop. I'm trying to gather as much information as I can, so I do it right the first time.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. The grain on this is so beautiful that it inspired me to go for a refin. As I said, it was gorgeous the way it was, but I've become a matte finish fiend lately. Except for my JA-R, which is staying gloss. I am tackling the stripping myself, and then handing off to Chris Bavaria for the finish. I have used a heat gun in the past but I wanted to make sure I did not weaken any of the glue joints, so I am just sanding and sanding and sanding. Small palm sander starting with coarse grade and gradually ending up with super fine and even 0000 steel wool. Progress pics to follow. The neck on this one is thin, but I might as well take advantage and make it thinner.

Man, if anyone has the new Rex Brown book, take a look at page 103. There is a huge advertisement for Spector which is really cool to see.

Like a good amount of us, he loved Rachel Bolan and Eddie Jackson's tone and he asked Rachel to borrow his basses to check them out. I wasn't expecting him to get into details with his basses so it was really cool reading that.

I was surprised about that too! I asked Rex about his basses when I first got to meet him and he went in to a fan mode when he started talking about the euros he's been playing.
