All it took to make a convert out of me was 2 rehersals with the NS-2.
Lee, it sounds really good in the mix. Take this as a compliment, you kind of have an old school Steffan Lessard type tone (from Dave Matthews band). Really gutsy, low mid presence that grooves hard. To anyone that says an NS2 ain't got mids, I think this clip sets that issue to rest.

What was your signal chain in the studio? What DI was used and what compressor? Do you know?

you guys are funny. So I didn't get to really crank the amp, but I was impressed but not blown away (compared to my current stock). Now please remember that I basically play a euro built to NS2 specs with a different preamp.
I completely get what everyone talks about with the 9v high end roll off... it sounds really smooth. Its very nice. The response is even over all strings.
At normal volumes the NS2 sounded 100% like my black NS-CRFM.
I am interested in playing it live in a band setting, but I can understand why Rex prefers the TonePump. I think I prefer the bass response from the 9v and the treble response (harshness) of the TP....
Feel wise, the NS2 felt significantly more balanced. The finish/fit is AMAZING. The neck was on the chunky size (John would love it).
The good news is I don't have NS2/9v gas, but it has made me realize I much prefer the all maple/brass bridge combo. I am convinced that is what is getting this tone mostly there. Acousticly you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the CRFM and the modern NS2. That really speaks to the quality of the Czech shop IMHO
Yeah it's definitely a step away. LOL
Chain was NS 2 > ADL tube DI > board. I can't really remember what compressor they had dialed.

So I had visit from John today and we both have some Surprise New Bass Day info.
It comes with a bit of a story.
Some of you may have seen on the Spector Facebook page.
PJ recently posted a Spalted Maple NS-2 #630. Those who are insane like me and follow the numbers, may have thought why is #630 being posted when they are up to over #800 in the NS-2/NS-4 series?
It is a 2008 model that was recently found in the back room of the Woodstock shop and PJ just so happened to mention to me that this mystery found the bass had a signed date of 10/15/08. My daughters birthday is October 15th.
So I told PJ I may be interested in the bass but I would have to sell my Forte to raise funds towards it.
The bass came with one more really big surprise, It was originally owned by Rex Brown as a sample for him to try out the Tone of the Spalted/Walnut tone.
So as of today deluccajohn2000 is the owner of Forte #35 and I a the owner of NS-2 #630, once owned by Rex Brown and it was singed on my daughters birthday.
A special thank you to PJ for setting up dealer to offer it to me at an affordable Sample/Demo price.
I had to take off the bridge to see it for myself.
P.S, because of this sudden sale that I forced John intoHis 2002 Euro4 and 2002 NS-JH5 will be listed for sale this week. PM me if interested.
They are both at my house now and I am giving them a set up.

Stick my Euro's Tonepump into an outboard box, put a capacitor in both tone pots and use them as passive, individual tone controls. I'd try it out but for the moment i can't for several reasons - maybe in a couple months time. Has anyone here thought of or tried anything similar? What did you end up with?
The main idea is to have more versatile control, and a preamp that i can use with my other, passive bass. On paper, my Euro should sound exactly the same, only with the added option of treble rolloff. Thoughts?

Love this tone! Cuts through very well. Lee, did you roll the treble knob off all the way? I like the way it's EQ-ed, very mid-focused.

because what I don't like on any of my NS-2s is if the treble knob is boosted. Too zingy, almost irritating. I usually just keep in in central (zero) position and add some lows.
No this was with both bass and treble in the center detents, blend in the middle. The producer and engineer loved it right there. Now, the day before, on the other track I used the maple boarded bass and they had me back off the treble a tad. That bass (ultra amber) is one bright beyotch.
