SPECTOR® Club - Part 56

Yeah I shot off a note to Hipshot just now to see. I don't see anything on their website that indicates a special version of the M4. It seems like the GB7 would fit but I don't want to take a chance with that.

I had heard before that a Hipshot installation would require drilling a new hole in a Webster. That scared me away from doing it, too, especially after I figured out how to use my PitchFactor to detune my entire bass to any interval.

I'm sure I could do the pilot hole myself if need be. And no the original hole would not be exposed, but if the regular tuner were ever put back on, the new hole would be exposed.

Truth is I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the Webster or my Euro 435 once I get my US builds in the summer. So I don't want to modify them in a way that will hurt their resale value since some people might not want a detuner on it.
The pilot hole would be minor. A GB7 has a different bushing/post size altogether than the Schaller. You probably don't want that.

I'd purchased some black GB7s for my green Euro that I subsequently sold before doing the mod. The pilot hole position is correct but you'll have to ream a bigger hole for each post. Not for the faint of heart! I gave up on the hardware switch more because the black Euro bridges had been backordered for so long. :scowl:

Here!!
Good news soon... :)

Yep - he posted back in Part 54, at least. Buckeye NS5XL and a Forte5 already in the stable - 'ours' looks like it could be his twin, but for the OBP-3 & stack knobs. I'll let him introduce himself in a week or so after the deal is done.

Michael - I know you special ordered this one....from the Tulsa store, IIRC. I may PM you to ask about the process, as mine will be the first one I've ordered. BTW, Karen literally cried when I told her a deal was in hand. She loves the Forte most out of the entire stable - and I could never argue about the tone. Just the 16.65 spacing :)

Thinking about going with a EMG J + MM config, with the OPB-3 and a coil tap on the MM, if it's feasible. In a dark Buckeye Burl, but that will mean (Black?) Walnut wings instead of Mahogany, which I think will make for a warmer / darker (& heavier?) bass. Still considering Birdseye vs Pau Ferro, but leaning toward the Pau Ferro.

Opinions on this config welcome from all, especially anyone who's done a J + MM !

That's cool! Tell Karen Hi and not to be too upset about the Forte leaving. It's about finding "That" right one that really fits us as a musician. Glad to hear its staying in the family.
I'll be more than glad to talk with you about special ordering anytime brother. Give me a call.
Yeah I'd think if you're looking for a warm, full sound I'd go with Pau Ferro Fingerboard. Maple would be a bit brighter. Even though on my Coda 5XL its plenty full but the BEM gives it some grit and bark. :D Which I love about this Coda! :bassist:
If you all that are not on Facebook, you should look up on our Spector club page. Ra Diaz playing his new Coda 5 for a new song. Sounds heavenly! You'll need to install "Social Media Cam" to listen to it.

I saw that. To bad I've blown my dough on non-spector stuff, I've always wanted a NS2o. I've been thinking of stuff I can sell quick, but I don't think its gonna happen. You should go for it, they don't come up very often.
PSA. Brett from Indianapolis has a killer kramer NS20 with a new US9V haz for 1800

killer deal. the wings are killer solid quilt maple. if one if you guys doesn't get it I might do something stupid.

he and I have tried to negotiate a deal for that bass a couple of times.
think I'll put my lakland up for sale and see what happens. maybe it'll still be around.

First gig with my Q5 last night. Wow. Absolutely cut through the mix. What a joy. Sound guy/drummer boy loved it.

Lowered the action prior to the gig and four hours were wonderful... no wonder the guy sold it (my first hour on it left my fingers sore a few days prior)

Q: GK has both active and passive inputs to the combos... swapped over to passive input as we weren't sending much signal via the IO to the board..... my tone pots were set to "zero" (at the 50/50 notch)

Effects comment - may have been due to the DI setup, but my effects pedal seemed to be over driven - ie the effects were "bigger" and more pronounced vs my active Fender... I'll need to modify my settings.

Those EMG-HZ pickups are HOT for passives. And the BT circuits that came in the NS-2000/Q Pro models were killer at 50/50. I have to turn down the treble on mine to avoid having too much bite. The tonal wave for the Q will be much different from a fender single coil or P. Hence why it seems fuller.

Are you talking NS-5H2 or NS-5XL? My NS-5H2 has 2 MM pups with the OBP3. I usually run it as 2 MM or split as 2 JJ pups. That being said J/MM is a very usable combo.:bassist:

Yep - the NS5-H2. From what I see, the 'wide 5' spacing isn't an option on the neck-throughs. I'm going to do some research (read: ask around in the TB forums) about EMG MM pickups and config possibilities - I'd like parallel / series / split and out of phase all configured if possible, but don't know if I can get that.

appreciate the info on the 2MM config you have.

Another P/DC convert here. I tried this briefly in the 5XL when I first got them P5 and J but I decided to put both DC's back in. Swapped the P5 and J back in today and liked it a lot, but that DC in the bridge gives the nice meat back to it with the great bark of the P5 on top. Going to keep it like this for a while. I dare say I almost like this sound as much as the Kramer NS-2.

Hmmm....
My 6 has two 45DC's in it. I've been considering this for a while as I would like to get the tone a little closer to my Euro4 with PJ's.

Anyone got a 45P they want to trade for a 45DC? :D
