I noticed Patrick's reason for the choice of the Aggie was convenience, not sound/tone. Then for recording where the sound/tone is under a magnifying glass, he chose the GB. Interesting.

We have PM'd on this and I thank him for his info and opinion. I had hoped that one of these two great amps would step out as a preferred favorite but that hasn't happened. It seems that only I can know what's right for me by using the amps, but there are none around. It looks like jbravo's suggestion to buy one from MF and return for the other if I'm not happy may be the way to go.

Love to hear anyone else chime in, and thanks to all who have posted on this subject.

What are the street prices on the Coda 4 and 5 pro and are thye currently available? IF so where can they be purchased?

they are due to arrive this month or maybe next month (Just confirmed with PJ) I'm not sure on street price, probably closer to $1000 based on List price

Good questions. I am now using a TCE Blacksmith through an Aguilar GS412. This, I have found out, is just complete overkill for the clubs here. Club owners and sound engineers (when we can afford to hire them) just look at that rig and want to tell me to turn down before I even play a note. I am going to go with a different pair of speakers I have, TCE's RS210 on top of an RS212. Small footprint, the top 10" speaker is even closer to my ears so I can hear with less volume, and very good clear, full sound. (See previous post for pic) What I want is a small amp to fit on top of the RS210. One with plenty of headroom that will handle the occasional times we do large venues or outdoor gigs. I plan to sell the Blacksmith but hang onto the GS412 for those larger gigs.

OK, the tone in my head? I have historically gone for a hi fi tone with lots of high harmonic content from round wound strings usually plucked with my fingers. Though I won't hesitate to use a pick if the situation calls for it. My playing style and the music I'm playing virtually never calls for slapping. Now, that said, I am currently in a place where I am willing to go back to square one, remove all effects, flatten all tone controls and start again to see what new (if any) tone I want to go with now that I'm playing a Spector Euro (for a little over a year now) and have a Spector USA on order. Maybe try for that "Spector growl" I've heard about. This will be my "go to" tone for general use in my cover band. I have also grown VERY fond of Eddie Jackson's tone on "I Don't Believe In Love" and "The Thin Line" and want to use that tone whenever appropriate for the song. And don't EVEN get me started on Geddy's tone from the last two tours.

I also have several pedals at my disposal so I can get the best sound for the particular song I'm playing. Tech21 VTBD and Bass Boost Chorus, Aguilar Tone Hammer, Boss flanger, harmonizer, and synth pedals, One Control's Mosquite Blender and Black Loop. All ready to be mounted on a Pedaltrain Pro once the "dust settles" so to speak.

Sorry. I guess what I wrote could be open to several interpretations.

If I had the spare cash and justifications for an Aguilar DB-751 (because I'm not in a band and I don't gig)... that's the head I'd use. Period. LOL.

The ToneHammer does sound better to me than the Genz. The TH is warmer, more classic sounding I guess...
The GB is ultra-clean and doesn't really color the tone.

Bass Central sent me the Genz - Grasshopper wanted me to try it and see what I thought. I like it. It's small, lightweight, etc... and has a bunch of features.

Do I prefer it OVER the Aguilar. No. Not at all.

Because I already own it and I figured it's better to have a spare laying around in the oddball case that I need one... plus I'm not big on re-selling things that are given to me. The Genz was a demo unit and BC told me to keep it since I do a lot of work for them... But still. I have income and I make money and pay my bills. So there's no need to sell something for the sake of selling it.

Anyway. Because I have it and it was just collecting dust. I decided why not connect it to the computer and use it as a pre-amp for recording.

Because I prefer the Aguilar, I love the warmer tone and the very simple setup and controls... it's a straight-forward, no need to constantly mess with the EQ settings, sort of amp... I use the Genz for the pre-amp and not the Aggie.

Sorry if I wasn't really clear. The Genz is a nice unit. Solid. Great features. Clean tone.

The Aguilar is a great unit. LOVE the tone. LOVE the simplicity. Not a lot of features but on a simple gig amp that you want to setup and play in under 2 minutes do you need them? The ToneHammer 500 has the sort of features the Genz does...

And the DB-751 is a Rolls Royce.

Between the Genz 210 cab and the two SL112 Aguilars... There's NO question which one of these two setups DOMINATES the other for tone. The Genz 210 is respectable and usable in a small gig situation.

The two SL112s CRUSH. They are like USA Spector Basses... even the hand-stitching is flawless. They're just a total different level above the Genz in my opinion.

For a couple of reasons... Just to clarify more. LOL.

The Genz is super clean. So using Pro-Tools and SoundForge and GuitarRigPro I can color the tone I get from it any way I want.

Because the Genz head has all the EQ and scooping presets, and it has a tube-preamp and a pre-amp out line... it made more sense to use it as a recording rig.

The Aguilar ToneHammer 350 is VERY BASIC. No effects loop. It has really basic controls. And it SOUNDS better to me live.

So I decided to keep the Aguilar TH350 with the two SL112 Cabs and place the Genz in the rack.

The Genz cabs are currently being used as a monitor stand in my photography studio.

I got the DB751 a couple of weeks ago and cannot believe what a powerhouse mutha of satan it is. Really liking having the TH500 for smaller stuff/practice and the 751 for when I want to slay dragons.

Man oh man Patrick, I never get tired looking at your NS-4 WCR!
I've been contemplating on buying a used NS-5 WCR...just need to figure out how to raise the cash...

I still think the tone out my NS-4 is my favorite.

I love the neck on The Pearl and actually it's just such a great bass to play...

But I REALLY love the neck on the Blue Dream and have found the neck profile I like best (Doug Wimbish).

So the "Steel Monster" will have the Wimbish Profile as well. As will all of my new basses from here forward.

I love BPL and NAMM because there's usually a DB-751 in the booth and I love playing through it... I usually get to the show really early each day so I can sit in the booth without the noise of the crowd and play.

This past year we had the ToneHammer 500 at BPL and it was really a good sounding little head. I'd honestly never paid the ToneHammers any attention... I like TUBES!!!

But Dave Avenius kept smiling and knodding to me as he would say, "Trust me, you're gonna like this."

And within a minute of plugging in my NS-4 into the TH350 Dave sent home with me from BPL... I was hooked.

has anyone purchased a coda pro yet?

I had the two prototypes here in my office over the holidays. They're REALLY nice.

I thought they were amazingly well crafted and the necks were right on the money... side by side with the USA Coda the Korean Factory did a great job matching the neck shape and profile.
