FUnnily enough I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Did you go for the EMG-HZs?
Took the plunge, did a setup and put on some GHS precision flats on my baby.
It. Sounds. Perfect. It has a fretless quality that I've been looking for, it's a little brighter than I want but I hear that after the breakin period it'll settle up. The sound on it still cuts through the mix enough, but settles in nicely with the drums and has some nice chest-punching thump even when I'm playing on the top 3 strings. It's like a Spector bred with a P-Bass, and while I can still get some snarl out of it when I want it, it also just plays and sounds like velvet when I want it as well. I threw a little compression/limiting on it and I'm off to the freakin' races.
25 years of playing and I end up with the most unexpected combination of strings and basses to get the tone I've been dying to get to.
I'm eventually looking at installing a new Aguilar preamp, but at this point it's got less to do with tone than control.

Today is the day the Forte 4 arrives and of course I have a full schedule today, tonight and tomorrow. Sux cause prolly won't get to play it till friday and only for a short time cause I got to leave for two gigs this weekend .

This belongs to one of the church bands that I play bass for. I finally couldn't stand the scratchy pots, LOUD humming and the best part...takes 20 minutes for it to warmup to get any playable level of sound to come out of it. 
When it works correct, my Coda 5XL sounds beautiful thru it! 
ANY ideas from experience/educated guess of what's wrong with it would be appreciated.
I threw a picture of my Coda in there to make it legit subject matter.

Hmmm... 20 minute warmup for a solid state amp? :scowl: That can't be good. Wish I could help. Always love seeing that Coda!

You guys have seen this before. It started out as Sam's, and then Donny's natural gloss JA-R. I got it from Donny, and despite the beautiful grain on the top, I had my friend Chris Bavaria refinish it in Gretsch Cadillac green. I added a black Leo Quan Badass bridge. These originally came with chrome Badasses. Next, was adding a Spector Tonepump preamp to replace, the overly polite to my ears, EMG BT. After that came an ACG-02 filter based preamp. Very cool. Lots of tonal options. In a moment of financial woe, I had to sell it. Fortunately I sold it to one of the nicest humans in our Spector club, Dave(Ubnomar). I was recently able to buy it back from himThe journey continues. I bought a gold Badass I to use in an upcoming project. I got to thinking that it would look good with the Cadillac green. That's what Gretsch does

I'd open it up, take some Caig Deoxit and some Caig preserve it, red and blues cans, and clean the pots. That might fix all the problems but probably won't.
It sounds like the power supply needs new caps. Not a big deal. Caps in an amp like that were designed to last 10-15 years. (I don't know how old that amp is). A good tech can do that quickly.
I not a tech, but I've had lots of stuff break in the last 20 years.

KB-300... That's not even a bass amp but a keyboard amp from the 80's.

Peavey has a site and you can ask for assistance, this is a 150 watt keyboard amp with built in compression. It is solid state and shouldn't have a 'warm-up', sounds like it needs cleaned (something could have spilled and leaked inside) and a good amp tech can bring it back to life....good luck!
The SpectorCores are making their 2-3 yrs. rare appearance on GC, 5 on there now, great low prices. Here's the first used USA Coda 4 that I've seen on GC also a great low price $1999.99.

That bass makes my blood boil, in a good way. Rarely have a bass stirred up so much GAS in me!

Some people use pedals for inspiration or to break boredom in a sterile setting but find a good, clean fundamental tone best for live work.

Regular 40DC/OBP-2 electronics, thinking about modding to 18V. But I still can not imagine how that bass is supposed to sound any better.

My former Forte 5 I ordered with EMG 40P5/40J pickups, modded it to 18V...HEAVENLY! You'll be doing yourself and your bass a favor by modding the OBP 2 to 18V. The Aggie really comes alive!
