SPECTOR® Club - Part 61

It's been a while since I've had a home studio, but I'm getting the itch to record stuff again...

So my questions are as follows...What recording program (DAW) are you guys using these days?? In college we used ProTools 7ish and I know that is hasn't changed much, but enough to make me to contemplate a different DAW, i.e. Logic, if I have to re-learn a lot of the fine points of ProTools. Also what kind of interface/plugins/mics are you guys using?

I'm looking to mic a cab plus go direct in so I have several different tracks to play around with!

Any input/advise from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

B.

Brad, I'm using studio one 2 as you probably have seen on FB. For me it is much more user friendly than the others I have. There are alway free plug-ins that are really useful and the browser window makes it all easy access. I really like the project(mastering) page also. For interface I'm using a Audiobox USB or my Studiolive 16.4.2 if I need more I/O's. I just started using the Steven Slate drums and that's a great drum program also. That's what I'm using. You were also talking about getting the Monique pre which is great for direct recording. I usually use a Audix D3, D4, or D6 for cab mic'ing. Depends on what I'm doing.

I've been using a Presonus USB interface for my sampler. Seems like good stuff. Sorry no advise on a DAW as it's been awhile though if you have a Mac I'd stick with Protools (just a thought). I think my MOTU Mach 5 sampling software is really good so you might want to consider their Digital Performer 8 DAW.

Live I use a good ole' SM57 to mic my cab and mix with direct but in a studio maybe a quality kick drum mic like the Sure Beta 52A. If I were headed into the studio I'd bring along my Aguilar Tone Hammer pedal for running direct (just FYI).
Good luck Brad!

Thanks for all the input guys!

NOLA, I definitely want an Avalon U5 in the mix! They are the shiznit!

Coop, I will look into Studio One 2. It appears to be a PreSonus product so that should work well with the Presonus interface I'm looking at!

Jeff, What sampling interface/program are you using? I am looking at a AKAI MPK-type controller for the drum sequencing and other cool MIDI sounds!

I'm using MOTU's MachFive 3. I have it loaded onto an Acer laptop with a Presonus AudoBox 22VSL. I then control it with Roland PK-5a midi pedals and an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. I record my samples with Adobe Audition.

It makes me think I'm Geddy Lee! :bassist:

I'm no expert, but recently put one together. Presonus interface, mic pre and headphone mixer. I also have an Avalon U5 instrument pre for my bass. I haven't bought a mic for a bass amp yet.

Sweet! I have experience with Digital Performer, but again it has been 6+ years since I've messed with it...or any DAW for that matter! ...it's a shame too since my bachelor's degree is in Recording Production and Technology...:hiding:

In like flynn. Pics forthcoming.

EDIT: Here ya go, some emerald tube-quilty goodness...

Is this a NS4CRFM? I see the matte bridge. Unbelievable wood and color!

I use an m-audio fast track pro and protools MP9. for drum sounds I use addictive drums. I've got a Moog sub phatty that I actually play, but also use as a midi controller. I use a presonus eureka as a hardware mic preamp, compressor and EQ but you really don't necessarily need a hardware pre. the fasttrack pres are not bad at all. protools comes loaded with plenty of decent plugins. The 5 minutes to a better mix series on YouTube has a ton of great protools tutorials.

Started a new solo project a week or so ago called L337 (it's Internet nerd speak lol). I'm doing all instruments and vocals on this. Doin vocals are a big step for me since I don't think I'm very good at it lol. I'm not getting any younger though and I feel like I need to do this for myself musically. Still have my other band as well though and we are writing new stuff at the moment.

Anyways I thought I would share a bit with you guys. Ill probably retrack the bass soon as I'm not 100% satisfied with it.

Hope you guys like it so far!
