Here is a pic of the back of my fretless headstock. It appears that neither the 'EX' top nor the lack of frets makes any difference in the model/serial number.
I'm going to bet yours will be a NS-5MM2....but to be honest, I'm usually wrong!
I mentioned that when I got it, and I'm pretty sure it was JPS who basically said that Stuart just kinda signs them in passing and makes the occasional 'error'
I actually like that about Stuart...just makes each one that much more unique!
Yeah I'm sure he's got more on his mind than the next oddball model number!
Anybody remember this little....uh...."oversite" I uncovered a couple of years ago? (see thumbnails).Just remember that even though Stuart is casual about this, once you get the bass you MUST always refer to your bass with that model number or you'll anger the Spector Gods!
Two SSD era NS6 basses, one green, one red, both labeled.....#20 (#020).
After several emails with PJ, I don't think we ever determined if there were still 26 total (the previous count listed) in the SSD era (meaning there probably wasn't a #19 or #21) or there were actually 27 due to two of them being labelled #20.
If #19 and #21 both surface, I think we can assume 27 was the correct count of these.

I know for a fact there are (2) #004 RXT basses. Mine in bahama blue and the one that Bass Central has in Coral that Rex signed at the 2013 NAMM show. Hey, mistakes happen.
I would go for a GB7 because.......
The tuners on my older (Gold hardware) Legend 6 look to be Gotoh or copies (there are no markings, but I've had GB7's on other basses) of GB7's.
To satisfy my own curiosity, I took one off and tried to mount a Schaller M4.
The GB7's do indeed have a larger shaft/bushing and would generally not be directly interchangable with Schaller M4's.
Ooops! DOH!
Well.....
At least they got as far as #20 before a blunder like that back in the SSD days.
But they were 20 years younger then. (Weren't we all...)

I'm really loving the Forte 4 I got from Todd (for Tim Gaines' NS2JJ),
but am finding I'm really prefering the tone of my other Spectors that have the trim Tone Pump.
I can't imagine it's the pickups (EMG's all around, but the ones in my other Spectors are about 10 years old and the Forte's are, of course, new).
So I'm thinking of swapping it.
If someone is interested, with a trim Tone Pump,
we should probably swap the whole guts too as the OBP-2 uses center detented tone pots and the Tone Pump obviously doesn't.
Better to just send the whole circuit rather than take it all apart.
My setup is Vol/Blend (which I prefer), but swap for a Vol/Vol setup is fine.

Finally had the chance to play the new Rex 5 Pro I got last week at rehearsal tonight.
First time I have played a 5 string in about 4 years in a live setting, and it was a challenge, primarily since I'm also the primary lead vocalist in the band as well.
More than a few ringing strings as I am still getting use to playing the 5 while singing, but fewer than I expected so I'll take the win.
First off, the Maple neck thru design definitely cuts a lot more than the Legend 4X with the TP Jr, but as I expected the BT is a little brittle sounding at times. With a pick for certain songs and the bridge pickup rolled back just a touch it did a great job of the classic P bass with roundwounds tone, with some of that Spector grit especially when I dug in a little harder.
Playing fingerstyle with both pickups full on I noticed that it really cut through the mix, but compared to my old 87 NS2A I found the BT just a little too brittle, the OBP1 in the NS2A seemed to be a little grittier and not as harsh in the high end.
Probably end up putting a set of 35DC's and an OBP1 in it and I think I'll really be happy with it set up that way. The Rex 4 I used to gig with all the time had the DC/OBP1 combination and I was really happy with that bass.
Looking for a gold bridge and tuners for the Rex 5 in case anyone knows where I can find some here on TB.
All in all I'm sure it's a keeper (for now - we all know how fast things can change in Spectorville) and I'm looking forward to bringing it out for a casino gig I have coming up next month. (you can laugh now - 5 string Rex Holoflash at a casino gig playing 70s/80s classic rock for a bunch of jackpot chasers, it doesn't get more metal than that)

Question if the usa 9v is so desirable why isn't the usa 18v . I love what 18v did to my tone pump !
I wouldn't want to interrupt your holiday plans, we can always have you bring in some of your basses the next time I'm in town. I will bring in #813 to see what amp/speakers you have and review some cleaning supplies, I also want to test drive a Coda 4 string bass and compare #813 to another NS2 without the BEM.
We should be in the store after lunch and I will have my girlfriend with me (she suggested the Tulsa trip actually...) so + or - a little time variation for the woman! lol
