If you can see the figuring then you're good to go.
I don't see why if you removed the paint and like the wood and then stain it, you can't now use the FM designation.
Interesting but it makes sense the FM would only append the ones showing the figured maple.
I'm still trying to figure out what my fretless will be designated as. I thought it would be an NS-5H2, with the H2 being for two humbuckers I assume. But I ordered mine with two MM pickups like Colin Edwin's fretless. And I saw one with those pickups on Bass Central and it's called an NS-5MM. So now I'm thinking that's what mine will be called. I don't think the fretless adds anything different to the model.

I believe this is different for 34" and 35" scale as the pups are placed at harmonic nodes as far as I know.

Here is a pic of the back of my fretless headstock. It appears that neither the 'EX' top nor the lack of frets makes any difference in the model/serial number.
I'm going to bet yours will be a NS-5MM2....but to be honest, I'm usually wrong!

See, I find that odd yours is 2J5. Since they do 5H2, I would think it would be 5J2. Also, the one on Bass Central had 2 MM's but was just a 5MM. So we'll see.

Hummm your headstock makes me think it's possible that it could be marked NS-2M5.....

My thought on Brad's pic is that (and Patrick or anyone correct me if I'm wrong) there is no model suffix to denote fretless, and maybe the EX is left off because when Stuart signs the necks they aren't mounted on anything yet. So he leaves it off. Maybe the full model designation can't be determined until the bass is finished and ready to ship?

He signs them mid-production, so this may be a valid assessment of the situation!

Just remember that even though Stuart is casual about this, once you get the bass you MUST always refer to your bass with that model number or you'll anger the Spector Gods!

If it's the standard nut, you'd have to file it a bit to fit the BEAD strings. I've had two different 435's I've filed for BEAD.
