I hate pickguards with a passion (irrational, I know) but this is classy. It's amazing what a Spector can do! Welcome to the family :)

Can people tell me about the preamp in Spectors?

Like I've mentioned before I'm probably going to order a custom Ian Hill 4lx and I was just wondering if it's worth sticking with the stock Tonepump preamp or instead getting the Aguilar one?

Your bass has a Non-Trim TonePump. Some of these older Non-Trim TonePumps already had an internal voltage doubler.

I wouldn't recommend doing the 18V mod on a older Non-Trim TonePump.

Many people including myself have done the 18V modification to the newer Trim TonePumps. It basically gives the EMG's a bit more headroom.

Some people swear by the 18V mod others like the Std 9V.
Others like it either way.

Hey Spector club, I'm looking to buy a new amp and I'd like to have some input from you guys.

I'm looking for a powerful, lightweight, small amp thaht can cut through two heavily distorted guitars in a death metal context. I use a clean tone, need the best note definition and am not against a growly amp, eventhough I will probably buy a pedal in the future for that purpose (thinking Darkglass B3k).

Any ideas ? I'm going to test drive a Tecamp Puma 900 this weekend, any input those relatively to my music style appreciated, as well as other recomendations.
I was also thinking Genz Benz (streamliner 900), Aguilar (TH500) or Gallien Krueger..

I think a pickguard can add a certain missing flare to specific basses. Take the Coda as an example. The pickups are small, as are the knobs. It has a nice figured top, but I find it looks fat & flat without some sort of accent piece, like a pickguard. Throw a typical Jazz guard on there & I think it would look gorgeous. The NS bodied basses don't need this. They have a smaller body & larger pickups, which leads to a more balanced look.

I know Ice would see this as heresy, but I'd love to see his with a white pearl guard. :D

I have successfully (to my ears, at least) used the Streamliner 900 and TH500 for a while now. I use the Streamliner for my Tom Petty tribute gig, and the TH for my classic rock cover gig, TH just being a bit beefier, more in your face, the Streamliner can get there too, but I like it for the more mellower stuff.

The name is a little deceiving as it really has P&J pickups under the H housing. We also went for the wide spaced neck (thin profile front to back) as well as a USA 9 volt Spector (HAZ) circuit in it. This bass sounds just as good as it looks.

It will be up on the GuitarHouse.net site in just a few minutes but wanted to give you guys the first look.

NICE! That looks exactly like my first Spector. You really can't go wrong with a Euro 4. My wife excluded, the current love of my life is an '01 Euro 4 named swampy. (I'd post a pic but my hosting site is down while they move data centers :spit:)

Thank you for the detailed info. As a brand new Spector owner I'm still trying to figure out all the minute differences between pre-amps, etc.

My pedantic side wants to make sure I have it set "right", and a lot of folks have mentioned TP + 18v. Makes sense that the older non-trim pot model would potentially not work well with this mod.

Really enjoying this bass so far btw. It begs for a light touch, which is a pretty big departure (in a good way) from the Stingrays and Fender Jazz I normally play.

The way this bass changes with the light is wild. Put it in a room with low lighting and you can barely see the quilting. In normal lighting it has a wonderful subtle beauty. Which was what I was shooting for. Then, I had this thing for a couple of days before I thought about walking out into the sun. When I did, it was like, "WOW, I gotta get a picture of that." And really? The picture doesn't actually convey what your eyes see. The 3D/depth aspect of it is gone.

But you're right. That's my favorite shot and "go to" picture.

Markbass F-1. Discontinued but there are some used ones in classfields for sale. I tested one a week ago and it has fastest
response I ever heard. Great for finger style. Great for any style actually. And it's one of the lightest 500 Watt amps in industry.
