I just changed the bridge on my rebop from the alloy to a black heavier bridge with Spector script on it . not sure if it is brass but the sustain is a lot better now to just get it hooked up and try it WOOOOOO

The matte Euro bridges that ended in the early Euro4/Euro5 era were full brass like the USA's.

The subsequent polished Euro bridges supposedly have a much higher zinc content.

I was under the understanding that all the black ones were already made with the higher zinc content so your tone should have been no different. Maybe not.

Just got this old girl back in a trade! 99ish? NS4CRFM!

I had put a tonepump in it before I had traded it off, now that I have it back, I guess Im fixing to get in line to buy a haz to try from Spector unless someone has one that they want to get rid of!

Its a different flavor for sure… less about the beautiful finish of the basses. But they are cool still

well unfortunately I haven't been able to play a JJ with a brass bridge.

But I really like the JJ combo with the Tonepump and the badass. The tone is a "thinner" than the PJ setup. The sustain is still there and the tighter punch of the low end really has me leaning towards the JJ for my band. Also (and this could be from wood/pups/bridge) the JJ is a little less mid heavy than my CRFM. I can dial that in from the amp so no problem.

That being said I don't know that I notice a huge difference between the badass and a fender standard "folded metal" bridge

Absolutely, You described my bass to me before I got to see it and you were right. But Ho, I took it out into the noon day sun the other day and... OMG. How do they do it!

I do know one thing though, my next bass (lord knows when) will be a matte finish. I love the look of gloss but I love the feel of matte. Word!

Matte finish does feel great but I love the depth look high gloss gives.

What does the name on top of the headstock mean?

I don't know. I think, everything else being equal, you could probably hear a noticible diference in tone. The Spector bridge is a full two pounds of solid brass. Massive. Most other bridges, including the Badass, don't have that much mass. Though in a side by side I probably couldn't tell you which is which

But the BadAss bridge not has a cool name but it looks really cool too.

Actually, this photo is of the first NS-5. And the whole bass was an experiment. So not being sure how wide to make the neck, the string spacing had to be brought in to keep the strings from jumping off the side.

Also, it was an early, experimental Quan Bridge. So it may have had normal .75 spacing. In which case it makes since that the spacing would need adjusting if the neck was the normal width.

There are so many things about the early Brooklyn building/design process that Stuart has ironed out over time and improved. But back in those days changes and new models were as much an experiment in flying by the seat of your pants to discover what works as anything else.

The first NS-5 is really not horribly playable. It's beautiful. But not really comfortable or tonally impressive. And so Stuart learned and changed things and improved them. And a few years later while at Kramer the first viable NS-5 models were designed and made.

The first NS-5 had an experimental pickup built by Ned Steinberger because no one was making 5-string bass pickups.

I am not sure who did it, but someone created a triple split coil DeMarzio bass pickup for this bass.
Ned Steinberger created an experimental bass pickup for the first NS-1 bass...

Ya know, I have checked before on BSO, and I did again yesterday, but I see no real advantage to ordering from them vs. any other website or from Sam Ass. The price on the LaBella strings is identical at all other places.
It's cool that they will give you a discount if you tell him about being on TB. However, the typical schlub buying strings online will see no advantage to buying LaBellas from BSO.
Are his prices better on other brands?

Best prices on GHS strings that I've found anywhere.

I will. I did string up the Precision Flats last night. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to get this much growl out of them! If they don't lose it too fast I'll be really pleased. Now I'm thinking I should have gotten 2 sets of both cuz the price was nice. AND I'd much rather deal with a smaller company like BSO, compared to the bigger boxes.

I have purchased one item from Imperial in the past. I did Kung Fu for 4 years, and I played the giant drum for the lion dance. I bought the giant drumsticks for that drum there!

Correct. In pure visual beauty none can rival a high gloss finish. But you can't deny the silky smoothness of the matte. AND... a wonderful lack of fingerprints and constant polishing.

Don't worry...I've not lost that growl yet
Same here with BSO...I had a warrantee claim on a PlanetWave instrument cable and BSO took care of it right away.
