That's what I always figured also...I wasn't concerned about having lines to gage by. I don't look at the frets as it is now, I look at the side marker dots. John, what fretless bass did you play? Did you end up selling it? Did you enjoy it?

Just remember that the side dot markers for a fretless are different than the ones are for a standard fretted bass. The dots are right where the first, 3rd, 5th, etc fret lines would be and not like the dots of a fretted bass which would be in the middle. Once I had that eureka moment, everything clicked

I had a custom fretless by Tom Clement who is a builder out of Florida. He makes some beautiful basses and I really loved the thing but it was 34" scale and at the time, I only had 35" scale basses so my intonation was starting to suffer since I was used to playing a larger scale bass. One day, I will have another fretless but right now I just can't justify it.

It's new bass day for me! It has been 1 year to the month and almost the day, since I've received a bass, let a lone new. Sorry, it's not a beloved Spector, though I wish, but it's my very first fretless. It wasn't in the cards this time around...if I take to fretless, which I don't have any reason otherwise, there will be a Spector fretless/unlined in the future.

That is great Mike, have fun with your new fretless hobby! After tuning it to standard pitch try locating the E note on your A string, this will show you how close you need to be to the line along that string...remember your finger is replacing the metal so don't let your brian confuse you like mine did! lol

I would really dig a Euro unlined fretless, it would possibly kill my Coda P bass desire....you shouldn't have shown this picture!

I set mine about halfway, that way, I can switch between Spectors and non-spector (blasphemy, I know) basses on a gig without much tweaking needed of my amp.

Isn't the TP trim pot a + or - 12db dial and center position would be level?

Treble: +14dB/-12dB @6,5kHz

No center indent on the knobs; and center would not be flat on either band.

I thought you'd treat it like a preamp gain knob and set it where it gives you the sound you want. IMHO

I felt the same way. My experience is similar. The first Spectors I played were Euros, the necks on them were pretty consistent. Chunky, but with traditional round C type profiles. I could have gotten used to them eventually, but I had Phil Jacoby shave them down for me. A few months down the line, the US Spector bug hit and hit hard. Spector Godfather Sam Cerami got me an insane price on a NOS Forte-4. Back then he was known as the Spector Pimp! Before the bass arrived I had ordered a US 9V circuit, those were the good old days LOL. When the bass arrived the first thing I noticed was that the neck was substancial. Technically speaking it was not huge front to back. The reason for this was that the neck had a flat profile. Like a squished D. I could have gotten used to it, but when you have one of the best luthiers on the East coast close by, why bother? Phil Jacoby to the rescue once again. Most of the material that he removed was from the "shoulders". It's not crazy thin now, but it is crazy comfortable. I understand that the newer model Fortes are beefy but rounder than the earlier ones.

You got the neck refinished right? Did this turn out to be the orange/amber one?

Victory!! I finaly beat the wires.
after a day and a half of soldering, resoldering and head scratching I finaly got my zeebop exactly how I like it. one volume and a balance controle with a push/pull pot for the neck pickup and a toggle switch for the bridge to handle the coil switching and bass mid and treble controles via the agular preamp,the twx's alone wer a huge improvement over the stock hz's but now she's perfect. this bass is quickly replacing my eurolx4 as my main bass and I think I may have to start looking for a nt euro with humbuckers to try out.
I know the switch looks to close to the knobs but I have yet to bump into it while playing with the eq knobs

Awesome!! I was "surprised" to see and feel how "chunky" the neck is on my USA NS2. I'd love for it to have less girth but with the Green stain and gloss finish, it would never match perfectly if I had it altered.

A question to the Tone Pumpers: where do you tend to set your trim pot? I set mine pretty low but noticed a more tame sound, not only lower volume but less harshness. I like harshness
So where does everybody set their TP trim pot?

I run my TP at 60% and it is really hot, but I love it. It allows you more dynamic with your right hand IMHO

That fretless is my new goal, I would like to play with the different pre also!

that's why I said "about"....where it sounded good to me.

And it sound like the middle position would be level or without any boost (similar to a pre-amp gain like Jeff noted).

It's about time!

I know, right? Longest. Week. Ever.

There was about 7-8 minutes of utter panic this afternoon when UPS couldn't find the box. They were packed to the gills with boxes at the customer pickup, including many that were literally stacked up right next to the door.

Crisis averted, however, when they hauled out a big ol' Spector box.

Hot date with the new lovely and a six pack of beer tonight.
