I was only really talking about the J pickups honestly, the P's are obviously inerently mid forward.

The standard EMG's aren't entirely scooped in the mids, they actually have a low mid bump, but the upper mids are definitely recessed and lack that alnico magnet grind.

Check out EMG's website, Bobby Vega does comparison clips of all the different J pickups flavors, and it's pretty remarkable how different the standard one's sound from the JAX/JVX line.

Can I ask what your thoughts are about the pickup that's installed into the Coda P-bass?

Well, I stopped playing bass for a living (didn't want to... had to), got a good job (that took a while), no mortgage, and no kids.

Oh yeah... and a VERY understanding wife! Evidenced by her sticking with me through years on the road.

I will always acknowledge I am very very lucky to be in this position. But I will also always miss having the creation of music on stage and in the studio as the central focus of my life. And for that I envy those of you who can do that.

Let's not forget the new Queensryche...

That might have something to do with him playing Spector.....

And he was also one of the bassist that I always admired. He has a lot of class and is a great player. To play with that many great acts he must be doing something right.

I have a question for anyone who knows... The EMG 35P pups, are the offset coils arranged like Spector, in the Fender way?

Thanks Carey. It was from the heart. I didn't start until I was 16, but hope to keep playing in some capacity until the fingers give out.

Just to play with OZZY says tons, look at all the greats that have played with OZZY..... Geezer, Inez, Sarzo, Newsted, Trujillo and Daisley. Those are all top notch guys. Most of those bassist and by most I mean all, are top notch players musicians and song writers. Granted, I think Trujillo was given more creativity when he was in Suicidal Tendencies, but Metallica hasn't been the best band to fully use a bassist since Cliff Burton's untimely death. But back to the point of Sarzo, he's the type of player who goes unnoticed because he plays what the song needs and he doesn't go overboard to make himself standout from the band. He is one of those guys that I think is a perfect bassist. And the new Queensryche rocks.

Talked to this fine Spector club member via telephone today (something I think I have had the opportunity to maybe have done twice in all my talkbass history), had a great talk and got some good news that progress is being made on my Spector being in the que! Yup, that sounds very tempting. After what MDbass said about the Aggies it's got me thinking. I didn't know the EMG's had a scooped sound, and with the Aggies having an aggressive mid grind it's got me rethinking the next build.

If you could post some sound clips sometime when you get a chance that'd be great.

Who knows, might even go with the Hot J's.

Exactly, but he did also tour with Yngwie Malmsteen (sp?) who is a pretty technical player, so you know he's got some serious chops as well.

I just saw the EJ version of Queensryche a few weeks ago and they do rock. I'll see the Tate version when they come through.

Well, it's actually opposite of that.
A vintage position P actually tends to already be heavier on the bottom strings with the E & A bobbin being closer to the headstock. With the D & G bobbin being closer to the bridge, making them thinner in relation.

Reversing this like Spector (and now many others have figured out), gives a little more distinction to the bottom strings while giving a little more body to the top strings.

Small difference, I admit. But it's one I definitely hear (I've modded/reversed these in the past on the same bass) and prefer.

I bought a fully BAS refurbished Trace elliot gp7/15 combo from BAS for about 300 bucks last year, and it's the best money I've ever spent! I bought it for home use but it actually gets used a large portion of the time over my big rig at band practices and small gigs!

Who/where is BAS? Sounds like a great place to buy bass rigs.

I use Markbass MicroMark801. Peretty damn powerful for it's size (around 12 lbs) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
I did not like its 6" version but this one with 8" makes a big difference. Headphone and aux, and can also be used with any 8 Ohm extension cabinet to add some bottom. Here it sits on top of my NY604 cab.

I played my Coda 5XL DLX thru a MarkBass MicroMark801 and it distorted so bad when playing off the B string, thought it was going to BLOW Must not be rated for the lowend freq. of a 5er.
