As i'm on my Spector search, I'm curious what you guys prefer: Bolt on vs. Neck thru?

I've been told the bolt on is punchier and the neck thru is smoother with more low end.

Keep in mind, I don't slap. I play fingerstyle 90% of the time and sometimes may use a pick.

Also, I've always had a fear that I would break a neck thru bass and not be able to replace or fix the neck. :(

This is generally correct but it varies on model and pickups.

What style of music do you play?
What price range are you looking in?

I am asking because.
You can compare
Euro Neck-thru or Bolt-On. usually ($500 to $1,000) used
Asian Neck-thru or Bolt-On. usually ($400 to $600) used
USA Neck-thru or Bolt-On. usually ($1,500 to $4,000) used

each one of these areas a different member would be able to provide the most detailed info.

I can help with the Euro Neck-thru or Bolt-On area.

NT!!! It has a lot more sustain and I haven't heard of anyone breaking a neck-thru. I have both...my legend 4 is my first Spector. The ReBop is a set-in neck and it has good sustain, close to NT. Personally...when I bought my former NS-2A, I was so excited by the sustain the NT has that I'll stay with the NT. One exception though,... Coda 4/5.

Sustain? Man how often do you hold bass notes?? :)

But since we're on the subject...I'll put my NS-5H2 up against any neck through. Sustain for days..if you do need it...and that spank you get only from a bolt on! Get a USA bolt on and you'll be giving up nothing to a neck through. I can't speak for the overseas models though.

I have a Korean bolt-on, and the thing has plenty of sustain for my needs. And like mmbongo said, you get that punchiness without losing much.

But I'm currently GASing hard for a Euro neck-thru, so I've played a couple and they're awesome, too.

Honestly, I'm just a fan of basically anything Spector puts out. It all rocks. :bassist:

Style of music: Christian Rock, Praise and Worship, Alternative rock, and Classic rock occasionally.

Price: $1000.00 give or take some.

I actually used sustained notes quite a bit with P&W stuff. However, I've never really met a bolt on that didn't meet my needs. Some have been better than others though.

I also play lots of P&W, and my Korean bolt-on is high quality. But if you've got the money to invest, I'd probably go for a Euro model. You can find lots of used ones in the $800-$900 range.

The only perks for my bass over any Euro I've seen/played are the Bubinga top and the stock 3 band EQ (Euros have a 2 band) but that's one specific model.

If you are in the $1K range. I strongly recommend you go for a EuroLX or a Euro.
That is about the average a used one sells for.

2004-Present EuroLX models alder back, walnut slice, maple top Tonepump Preamp

Older Euro models have solid maple wings. EMG BT or Aguilar OBP-1 Preamp

There are some later Euros that have Tonepump Preamps.

P.S. If you see one you like get the serial # so one of us or Spector can identify the specs.
There is alot of confusion with most sellers

iceboxbass plays Praise and Worship, he just purchased a Ian Hill EuroLX model and he is very happy.

My EuroLX has tons of sustain.

I will do a sample recording with just some sustained notes comparing my EuroLX, Euro, NS2JAR and ReBop.

I just found some videos of a recent gig with my then-brand-new-to-me Euro5LX. I'd had the bass maybe a week or two. My rig is an Epifani UL502 w/2 UL112 cabs, no FOH. What you hear is what the rig sounded like - minus the effects of the Zoom video camera and Youtube.

This is one of many groups I play with, but the only one I've gigged the Spector with to this point. The video was actually put up by one of the other bands we played with that night. Nice of them!

We were down our usual lead guitarist, but we managed as a 4pc. There are some chronic musical problems with the band that you may (or may not) pick up on, but the response to this band has been unlike anything I've ever seen before. Most of our gigs have a bunch of people dancing right in front of the stage to this stuff. Girls loose their voices screaming, but there's just as many guys as girls. It's odd, in a cool kinda way. Or cool in an odd way? Anyway, it is what it is, and you'll hear the Spector at work.

Part 1 - (actually the end of the set - also has some language that I don't really appreciate, FYI):Rape the Giving Hand

Part 2 - Somewhere else near the front of the set: Change In The Scenery

Part 3 - about the middle of the set, and our signature song (the band is Chasing Disaster, the song is called Chasing A Disaster): Chasing A Disaster

The usual disclaimer applies: Excuses, excuses for why I'm not coming across as good as know deep down in my little heart that I can play, yada yada yada... Seriously, I'm still flushing a few parts out of a few songs. :)

Well I can't do a proper comparison with a Euro NT vs. USA bolt on bc I've not played a USA SPECTOR. I would like to as some day my next SPECTOR will be a USA made.
In P&W there's often the need for sustain, i.e. Song by Franchescia Battestelli, "This is the Stuff", where you hold the note for 8-12 beats at 4/4 time. And there are other songs that are slow worshipful songs, too many to list.
