Just thought I would post a family pic. From left to right: NS-2JA-R, '87 NS-2, Dave LaRue's '88 NS-2 with Kahler Tremolo, '89 NS-2 fretless, & Forte X. The fretless is on it's way out the door though. Also, I received #155 from Spector Ray, but I guess it was about when he stopped doing the numbers, so I guess I need a new number, because I don't want to mess up the list. Thanks in advance Trace.

Hello there Spector players! Im in the market for a new bass, and i was eyeing the Spector Legend series. I was wondering if someone could answer some questions i had about the 5 and 6 string versions.
- How is the build quality? I know it wont be the same as one of the higher end ones, but how do they compare to other basses of similar price?
- Do the Legend series basses have any neckdive? This is always a concern i have when buying basses, as neckdive is kind of a pet peeve of mine.
- How do they sound with their stock hardware and pickups? If i buy one, i plan on eventually upgrading the pickups to some real active EMGs, has anyone ever done this with their Legend?
Thats about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I've got one of the newer legend classic 5ers.
In terms of build quality, it's pretty solid for the money. The one issue I've had is the finish on the neck can get sticky if left in a case during hot weather, as when it got to me part of it had been stuck to the foam it shipped in from the previous owner, and it did it again when I took it to jazz camp. I took it to my local shop and they fixed it right up (I think they lightly sanded it to get it smooth, ill have to ask).
The sound with the stock electronics is pretty good, but IMO it's not terribly flexible. It sounds good with the tonepump flat, and slightly rolling off the neck pickup gives me a nice growl, but compared to my modulus's active EMG circuit (also 2 band) it's not vary flexible. That said, the stock sound has worked well for the various genres I've had to play, including jazz, R&B, classic rock, funk, and a little metal.
As far as action it's on the medium-low side, I'd like to get it lower but there's already a decent buzz on the sixth and eighth frets of the b e and a strings. It doesn't sound through the amp, but it's annoying. Slapping on it took some adjustments as my other basses (modulus and ibanez) had ridiculously low action. Tapping on it takes a little more effort I've found.
There's no neck dive that I've noticed, it sits pretty nicely when sitting or standing.
Over all I really like this bass, and it's become my workhorse. My modulus has some issues that make it so I only take it out of the house to record or for certain gigs, and frankly, the ibanez (sr 405qm) doesn't sound as good. If I was going to change anything id swap out the pickups and pre for active EMGs and a BTS system. I may try to adjust the action later (had it set up when it came in July, but it could just need more frequent attention than my other basses)

How do I figure out what year my Spector Euro 5LX was made in? Is the serial number found on the back of the headstock?

Well since yesterday was Sunday...maybe today. I know for me PJ has responded back within one week day. But, like JPS has said here recently, PJ reads over 100 emails per day.

I'm on the same boat, would love a few more comments - obviously, this is the Spector Club so opinions may be biased, but I'm ok with that - I really want to know why you guys love these basses.
Spectors recently caught my eye, really love the body and headstock shape and the price (of the Legend Classic) is right. But I've never actually played one - will definitely play a few before I go ahead and buy one but can't hurt to get some opinions first.
To add to the questions above, how do they compare to Soundgears sound and weight wise? My only bass at the moment is an SR400QM and I really like it but it's the bluish purple quilted top and I'm gassing badly for a natural finish (I really never liked blue instruments to begin with). So I was considering getting either an SR500, SR600 or the Legend Classic in the natural finish.
Are the necks thin? Soundgears are obviously very skinny and I wouldn't mind a little extra girth, just nothing outrageously fat.
The only Spector's I have ever heard with neck dive issues are 5 string Rebops but I don't have one so I can't comment on that directly. I have a Euro 5LX which doesn't suffer from any type of neck dive.
As far as the neck's on the Legend series, that seems to be what everyone really likes about them. I want to get my hands on one to try for myself but outrageously fat is definitely not something mentioned when raving about the necks. Definitely thin and fast are what you will hear people mention when they describe them.
No neck dive on my Euro 5LX either. Can't help you with the Legends since I've never touched one. As a matter of fact I never touched a SPECTOR before I bought my 5LX sight unseen.
Ergonomically, they're extremely comfortable. Before trying mine, I was not a fan of finished necks. However, my Euro's neck is extremely comfortable to play. Also, it has yet to get a sticky feeling after a few songs. Playability wise, the neck's carve is extremely comfortable to play. I would say I have average sized hands, and the neck fits like a glove. The string spacing is comfortable. The inlays are large, and that makes it really easy to see on a darkened stage. This bass is also extremely stable. In and out of the case, and in different environments, the only adjustments I may need to make is a slight tug on a tuner or two. My guitarists are jealous that I'm never out of tune. The neck is also very stable. I have yet to need to tweak the neck.
Now for the sound. A Spector just has a sound on it's own. They can be very agressive, but I don't go for that. What I do go for is to be heard in the mix, with two loud guitarists, and a drummer with some kind of issue with his drums that causes him to beat the crap out of them, lol. The Tonepump is a great preamp. The only thing I ever adjust on my amp is the volume occasionally. The Tonepump has more than enough adjustilbily in it that I can EQ for the room. I like a deep bass tone, with just enough top end to make those notes audible. All I can say is when my main bass was an EBMM, which I loved, I never got the tone compliments that I do with the Spector. Other bands' bassists give my tone alot of compliments, and I think the Spector is the key to that.

Thanks. I really like the X. It is pure rock. To reach up past the 19th fret is rough, and impossible to get to the 21-24. It's the heaviest of them all, but the '88 with the tremolo is darn close. My only gripe with it is that the neck is quite chunky. Thank god it's narrow in width otherwise I wouldn't keep it. PJ said it's because of the graphite rods. But it's not like it's impossible to play.
