Spector Club (Part 2)

Here's my Classic Legend 4 Bubinga. Bought it as second hand for 250€, and I made following mods: 18V electronics mod, strap buttons changed to Schaller straplocks and plastic nut replaced to bone version. Strings are my custom set of DR Lo Riders .50, .70, .90, .125 in CGCF or BGCF tunings

Next upgrades will be Aguilar OBP-3 and pickup replacement. Pickup replacement suggestions for hard rock and metal picking style of music are welcome.

Here's a great thread by user Mad Hungarian who has modified his Euro 5 LX with an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp and Seymour Duncan Passive Phase II NYC Soapbars, a dual-J soapbar much like Nordstrand Dual Coils, Fender's Roscoe Beck signature, or the rear pickup in Fender's American Deluxe Precision. He's recorded multiple clips of the pickup in series, parallel, and single-coil settings using both fingerstyle and slap, and it's a great resource for a pickups not thought of much as a typical "Spector Replacement" but actually sound amazingly good in his.

don't laugh too much. this is my first attempt at messing with garageband. i was trying to do some quick learning and lay down some basic tracks. my main purpose was to have the stock sound before i make any changes to have a frame of reference. my timing gets off in a few places.

my rebop is an all alder body with emg hz's and the tonepump preamp. i recorded direct with no effects and i play with my fingers (sorry, my nails need a little trimming and you can hear them "grab" the strings every now and then).

i have an emg bqc, 40tw and 40p5 that i plan on putting in later. after i'm finished i'll put up a full thread about it. but figured i'd put the sound files i have now with the stock setup on here. again, don't laugh.

Anybody own or have played one of these beauties? I've heard conflicting things about their tone. Apparently the grade of rosewood required to make a stable neck is much higher than that of most fretboard pieces.

I've heard these rosewood necks offer a deep and clear sound as opposed to warm and kinda muddy like I may have expected.

I'm thinking about picking up a USA BO, maple/mahogany with the rosewood neck. I've already got a USA BO with a maple neck. I picture a more Warwick-ish sound which would be cool.

I believe the first and third clips use a bass (they look like the same bass) that has a rosewood neck.

The Performer bridge is unlike any other Spector bridge. To adjust the string height, you first have to loosen the allen screw on the front (i.e. neck side) of the saddle. Then the allen screws on both sides of the saddle itself can be used to adjust the height. When you've got it where you want it, tighten the allen screw in front again.

To adjust the intonation, you have to loosen the allen screw that is on top of the saddle behind (i.e. bridge side) the height adjustment screws. You might need to detune the string to get the allen wrench in there. I'd also suggest marking the current location of the saddle with a pencil mark on the bridge. Once the saddle is loose, it moves freely.

All I can tell from their website is that all of their 6 string pups measure 115mm except the EMG-40P, which is 102mm. Unfortunatly, it doesn't list any other dimensions. A couple years ago, I had some questions about a pickup swap on an Ibanez and I e-mailed them and got dimensions. I can't remember which e-mail I used. It did take about 4 or 5 days for them to get back to me if I remember correctly.

Right when I bought this I searched some threads for people talking about it, and it seemed from what I found, everybody thought this bass was ugly.

I however have a fetish for flat black, so I really like it, although I really abhor Nickleback and all they stand for :)

Regardless, it's a great bass, especially for the $500 I paid for it!

I was thinking about goign the same route for my Euro 6LX (swapping out the stock EMG 45DCs) at one point but after a while I came to LOVE the sound I got from it. These are all drop in replacements for EMG 45 size pickups (your bass has 45HZs if you didn't know).

You may notice that the Nordstrands don't specify a six string version (they have the EMG 45 size for 5 strings) but they do make them. It would be a semi-custom order so the price would be above the $315 that is shown. I think he gave me a quote of $400 but you probably should check that out for yourself.

Also, EMGs now use a proprietary contact system between their pups and pre-amps. I know that you can rig a EMG pickup for use with other pre-amps but I'm not sure if the same works the other way around so it may be in your best interest to do both the pickups and preamp at the same time.

I would've linked some pre-amps to but I figure they're a lot easier to find, just look for one that accommodates 4 holes. I know Nordstrand, Glockenklang, Audere, Bartolini, EMG, Aguilar and John East Preamps all have ones that would work nicely for you.

So there ya' go! That's everything I've got, lol. BUT, I say give it a few weeks before making your decision. You may find, like I did, that you love the sound that you have and save a few hundred bucks! Enjoy :D.

Actually Im pretty sure Spector did make a first generation Legend with P/J pickups (check on the bay, there is one for sale right now I believe), and yes there is such a thing as a passive Spector...Kramer Spector NS2-C..I have 2 of them...but no there isnt a Spector Legend PJ thats passive.

My wording was a little weird, my bad. I'm interested in the NS2-Cs though. They're mentioned on the Spector site, but no pictures there or at Spector World. So, as per TB rules and regs, they don't exist until photographic evidence is produced.

Now if there was only someone who had two they could photograph, and maybe tell us a little about them....
