Spector Club Part 6

I decided to step away from the computer and step away from all the scale and technical excercises I've been doing lately to just "play".

I hooked my NS-4 into an Ampeg SVT-450 and that into a Fostex VF160EX mixing board... I ran the VF160 out via Midi into my soundcard.

I then used Sony Vegas to sync the video from my webcam with the "clean" capture of my playing.

A few little bumps/jumps having more to do with the phone ringing. But it all spliced together nicely.

You get to hear my NS-4 run through a few different pedals and it gives you a good feel for the sound.

I have a couple of books that I do exercises from.
The first being "Bass Logic".

Then I do left hand/right hand exercises to work on autonomous dexterity.

I have another book that is just scales and modes for the bass. So I sometimes pick a scale or mode and will spend an hour running through their different variations.

Such as:

I really like the rebop series. They feel great to play and very comfortable. Definitely a Spector and cant go wrong. I am not the biggest fan of the stock emg-hz pickups though.

Yes. The Euro4LX-35 is a 35" scale Euro4LX.
Any 4 string neck thru Euro Model can be ordered with the 35" scale.
Even the Ian Hill and Wimbish Models.

The 35" scale 4 string models are typically special order. Although some dealers have them in stock. They typically come EADG. Although BEAD is an option. The Official Spector Price Sheet reads as such:

"35" special scale, all Four String Models: with standard or BEAD Low Tuning .065 -.130"

I'm personally interested in one of these. The Ian Hill model in BEAD is something I'm thinking about.

What is the B string gauge for 5 string rebop, with Emg DC and EMG bts in it, you addvise or prefere.
I have Galli saturn strings on with 140 B string and it feels a little floppy.
Did I over gauged it.

Actually, .140 is heavier than the norm and shouldn't feel "floppy" at all. I think you'll find most guys are using a .130 there. I prefer a .125 and it's not floppy at all. Maybe a change in string brand is in order (never heard of Galli Saturn before).

Is that you playing in the links?
Since we might be dealing with a translation issue here,
what do you mean by "floppy".
Neither the pickups, pre-amp or string cleaner should have any effect on a .145 string on a 35" scale bass feeling "floppy".
The string "cleaner" may change the tone, but that's it.

The knobs are walnut, got them on line. The dots on them are small self adhearing inlays I had left over from another project. Tuned B-E-A-D-G-C.

Not really. It depends on what you are doing. As a session-oriented bassist and not a performance/gig bassist, I need to know scales, read music (not just tabs) and be able to speak the language of the guy who wrote the music and has hired me to come in and lay the tracks down.

So theory, scales, modes and being able to improvise in a particular key, knowing the notes of each string on each position of the fingerboard, all of it becomes really important.

But if you are gigging, doing covers, even writing your own stuff, you don't have to know any of this. I know many very talented bassists who don't know how to read music and can't tell you the notes they are playing. It doesn't stop them from sounding awesome and performing like rock-stars.

I'm releasing my number for reissuing, because I stepped out of this club last week - sold my Legend Custom after a few years of use and abuse.

I just couldn't get the sounds out of it that I wanted (I'm gearing towards J-basses nowadays) and it was a too good of a bass for just collecting dust in the corner. Hopefully it will serve it's new owner as well as it served me:

(WARNING! What follows is a raving praise of my old bass)
It was beaten (literally), played in numerous different temperatures/moisture levels (did a tour for 3 weeks, temperature changed between 16-30 degrees celsius, and the weather varied from dry to torrential rain situations) and never did I have to worry about it being unplayable, out of tune or having some other issues (noise, electronics).

So: If anyone from Spector is reading this, the Korean Legend Custom line is the best bang for your buck in that price range. And you can quote me on that. :)
