You are NOT alone on this at all. I HATE plastic on my instruments (BTW JP, your argument about the Bently having plastic knobs was funbut not parallel in my universe! heh heh)... but, I'm not sure these are plastic (are they JP?). They certainly are not the default plastic knobs (angled top) usually seen on Spectors. These kinda look like the b!tchin' Sadowsky knobs... which are metal BTW. I'm not sure, but these might not be plastic.
You want knobs? I'll give you knobs, try mine.....Unless you have arthritis and olive oil on your finger tips, knobs without ridges are easy to turn
I installed an OBP-3 into an NS2a I used to own. I added another pot for the mids instead of going with concentric pot. I also added a switch to toggle the mid frequency. It was definitely tight, but doable. I actually mounted the battery (I was only running 9 volts) holder onto the control cavity cover. If I was to do it again I would use three of the mini pots that Fodera uses and put the mid control in between the treble and bass pots.
I went a little bit crazy and ended up purchasing another spector today. I've got myself a 5 string spectorcore bass guitar. It's just that bit different, gives me something different from my other spectors. I'll have to post a picture soon, it's a lovely guitar, and I just could resist it any longer
I've wanted to try one of those. Have a 2000 Euro 4 I love, but the fretless version of the new Spectorcore really intrigues me. Definitely let us know how that bass works out.

I decided to step away from the computer and step away from all the scale and technical excercises I've been doing lately to just "play".
I hooked my NS-4 into an Ampeg SVT-450 and that into a Fostex VF160EX mixing board... I ran the VF160 out via Midi into my soundcard.
I then used Sony Vegas to sync the video from my webcam with the "clean" capture of my playing.
A few little bumps/jumps having more to do with the phone ringing. But it all spliced together nicely.
You get to hear my NS-4 run through a few different pedals and it gives you a good feel for the sound.

I've got an NS-2A coming that I *may* put a tonepump in. I'm going to swap the bridge for a Legend Gold and change to tuners to gold as well.
If not the tonepump, then maybe an OBP-2. But, it will really depend on how the generic pre sounds. But putting the battery on the cover (i assume with sticky vecro?) and with a third pot, might crowd things in the cavity.

What sweet, sweet tone from the NS-4. I literally cracked up when the cat strolled in. I thought I heard some STP in there somewhere.
In terms of soundcards - well, I'm looking at a USB-powered pre to record on the PC. For some reason with Windows 7 and my SoundBlaster X-Fi, the latency is horrible for recording.
Tascam, Presonus and Mackie make some decent ones I hear.(under or close to $100)
Any suggestions? Also, do you use a digital video cam (I assume you do, given the nature of your work)?
Also, on the Spector site, it states that the Rebop 4DLX-FM is a 35" scale?

Thanks for the info on the typo. The ReBop4 is 34" scale.
If you're NS-2A is coming with the Korean Haz copy in it and it works. Then keep it. It's really a great tone control system. If it has the stock pups they are basically EMG passives with "Spector" printed on them.
The TonePump is what I put in my NS-2A and it sounds great. Just make sure you adjust the trim pot on the TP unit itself down. I have mine about about 1/2 way on both my NS-2A and my Euro4LX.
As far as STP... yes. Interstate Love Song... a great bass song IMHO.
As far as the USB guitar interface. Behringer. A UC6102 Guitar Link USB interface is awesome. Before I had the Fostex Digital Multitracker that's what I used.
All of the NIN/HTDA remixes I've done except the very latest (the Tarrantino vs. Reznor mix) were recorded with my Behringer USB Guitar Link and Native Instrument's GuitarRig4.
The USB interface is about $50. Has settings for hi and lo impedance and has a clip warning light for levels. A simple, awesome solution.
And the cat... she's a rescue. Just got fixed so she has to wear the little plastic Elizabethan collar so she won't pick her stitches. She's a siemese and strange fact... one I never knew before now. That breed of cat likes to play fetch like a dog. She's a trip.
Lastly, yes. I was using a Logitech USB Orbit, a really nice camera for what I recorded. I had it on my laptop sitting on top of my stack of camera cases in front of the huge window in my office.
For digital/personal stuff I have a Canon 720p (progressive) camera (records to memory cards) and for Pro I have a Canon 5D. It shoots full 1080p @ 30fps and has a full 35mm CMOS sensor so it get the depth of field that you get with movie cameras.
Well done sir - that is one mighty fine instrument. I'm more or less a five-string exclusive gut, but the more I check out the 4-string Spectors the more they seem to have a little something extra that I don't hear in the fivers. Not sure what it is, but I like it... almost enough to make me want to snag a 4

I've checked a couple local shops and the Guitard Center - and no luck.
Anyone know where I can find or buy

2) 2nd box, double walled more than 52" long?

Call your local guitar center or sam ash or guitar store... they'll usually give you a shipping box for free.
Looks like the Logitech cams have come a long way!
I need a usb pre with an xlr input too - I'm thinking the M-audio (I misspoke when I said Mackie) or the Tascam.
I really hope it solves the latency issue.

You may be aware of this, but if not... Don't get sucked into thinking that claiming a specific amount on the airbill, that you are insured for it. YOU ARE NOT. They will charge you more and you are NOT covered. I've shipped 100's of instruments.. most valuing over $2k, some over $10k. They only way to assure you are covered is to have it covered externally (by you or the receiver). I use and advocate Heritage Ins, but I'm sure there are others. They cover over $100k replacement value of my equipment and it costs me less than $150/year. I'm covered at home, car, shipping, etc.
A mishap in shipping is pretty uncommon... BUT they do happen, and the claims process through the couriers is painful and mostly fruitless.... without external insurance.
I will soon be joining the world of spector.

It's not really a fair comparison. The NS-2JA-R model is a jazz bass. The two single coil "J" pups are designed to give you more mids and be more "punchy" that the NS-2 or NS-4.
And my NS-4 can't/won't hit the lows of the P/J powered NS-2 and Euro4LX models. Each has an application. The NS-4 with dual-coil hummers is really about the nice mid-level sound that a lot of mainstream pop/fusion/rock and alternative guys like.
If you want the boom... go for the Euro4lx or NS-2.
Don't be downing your bass bro! I love my JA-R. It's an awesome Jazz bass. And sounds incredible in studio.
I know it's an excellent instrument. The quality jumps out. For the price it was it can't be beat. I still don't know why it wasn't more popular.
Still, I find myself favoring the bridge pup and blend to tone down the mids punch. I might try flats on it soon.
