Spector Club Part 6

Hello everyone. Im posting here because i was wondering if you guys could give me some advise on the Spector Legend Classic 6. I recently took over bass for my metal / hard rock band, and got myself an Ibanez BTB776 6 string. I really like it alot, but seeing as how we intend to play gigs in the near future, i am going to need a backup bass incase of string breakage, electronics failure, etc. So ive been searching all over the net for 6 strings. There doesnt seem to be much selection in the <$1000 market as far a 6 stringers goes, but the Spector Legend 6 has caught my eye.

Some of the things i like about my BTB are the sound, the neck, and the great balance and complete lack of neck-dive. So my questions are..

How do the Spector Legend and the BTB compare sound wise?

After doing some research, a few people have said specifically the Legend classic series basses are somewhat prone to neckdive because their bodies are small and light weight. Is there any truth to this?

and.. What are the necks like on Spector legends? Im not incredibly picky when it comes to neck thickness, but i dont like really thick necks.

Anyway thats it. Id appreciate any help you guys can give me :)

Can I get a number? Been searching for "MY TONE" for 20 yrs. I found it with Spector, Markbass and DR Black Beauties. What a great bass. The Legends are underrated, best bass to come out of Korea. Neck feels better/thinner than the Euro's. Saving up for a USA made....

If I had to guess. And that's what I'm doing because I've never really discussed it. The knobs were designed to provide "instant grip" when you are gigging and you need to make an adjustment. And if your hands are sweaty from being hot on stage, back when these guitars were first made and these knobs first designed, metal wouldn't have worked as well. Also back then... in the late 1970's, the metal fabrication technology to easily cast knobs shaped like these would have cost a fortune. And Stuart didn't have the resources.
Over the years they've just become a "tradition" I guess. And another thing is weight. My USA Spector is much heavier than either of my two Euros and my Korean NS-2A isn't even close. So metal knobs would just add that much more weight.
But I get what you are saying.
When I think about it. I totally see your argument. But at the same thime I've never really thought about it. Basically because even in a Bentley, or actually I can use Ferarri as an example... driven one of those plenty of times... They are top-of-the-line... And the interior is FULL of plastic knobs and buttons.
So in my mind I don't really associate a plastic knob with being cheap. If that makes any sense.

Congratulations! I don't have anything to do with numbers. But you don't really need one to be a member of the club... so... WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!

And you are absolutely right about the Legend Basses. They are outstanding instruments. They are seriously underrated and we have no doubt they are the best guitar coming out of Korea. The same shop and shop manager has been making them for us since 1986.

The Korean bolt-on necks and set-necks are thinner, more streamlined than the Euro AND USA neck-thru models... unless you are talking about an Ian Hill model. Stuart builds the Neck-Thru models to last. Think about it... something goes wrong with a bolt-on neck you can replace it. But the heart of a neck-thru guitar is the neck. If it fails... the guitar is useless. So Stuart has always made the necks of the neck-thru models a little thicker.

My Korean-made NS-2A ironically has the closest neck in shape, thickness and width to my new USA NS-4. And anyone else out there with an older Korean neck-thru can back me up... these necks are a little thicker than the Legends.

Legends have wonderful necks. But if you don't mind a little readjustment... it took me a single day to get used to the new thickness of my NS-2A when I got it (I started as a Korean Spector player with an older Q4 Pro model... the forerunner of the Legend... same neck profile as the Legend).

You are NOT alone on this at all. I HATE plastic on my instruments (BTW JP, your argument about the Bently having plastic knobs was fun :) but not parallel in my universe! heh heh)... but, I'm not sure these are plastic (are they JP?). They certainly are not the default plastic knobs (angled top) usually seen on Spectors. These kinda look like the b!tchin' Sadowsky knobs... which are metal BTW. I'm not sure, but these might not be plastic.

To me anyway, the plastic knobs are like the brass nut on a Spector. Just one of those aesthetic things that make a Spector a Spector so I'm for 'em. The previous owner of my NS5CRFM put gold knobs on which makes sense since the rest of the hardware is gold but I still prefer the look of the plastic ones so I'll be pulling the switcheroo eventually.

LOL...I am that previous owner, I believe! You want the plastic ones? I will take the gold ones.

Actually desktop images is something PJ and I have talked about. I'll get around to it. But for now PJ and I are working on some non-web projects and of course... there are some areas of the website that we want to beef up (like putting a little more tech info online).

In time. I definately like the idea of Spector desktop images.

Interesting point about on-stage adjustment - supose the white lines would be a help with that as well. I don't really adjust my bass on-stage, so that didn't occur to me.

Adlerburg - the metal would be better, but the aesthetics get me too... just not a fan of that look at all.

I like the plasic ones.
I guess it's something I got used to since my 80's USA NS2 and both NS2A'a came with them. I also had an original Steinberger XL2 for a lot of years that also had these knobs.

I'm also not a fan of set screw (metal) knobs on split shafts. The set screw will eventually bend the shaft tangs (I actually had one snap off).

The push-on black plastic just works better for the split shafts and is the Spector look. The black metal ones don't look bad, but everytime I see gold knobs on a Spector (any bass for that matter) it looks like when they bling-up those many super cheap import brands to try and make them look more expensive.

To each their own.... I personally agree about the gold bling thing, liking the black anodized myself.... Still hating plastic. One thing about those who are a fan of the plastic knobs... what to do when a concentric is needed? 3 Plastic and a mismatched concentric?

Affirmative. You sold it to Bobunit who in turn sold it to me (as I understand it). I thought Bob did the knobs, my bad :o Yeah, if you have a set of the plastiques then I'd rock the swap.

On a side note, having nothing to do with knobs, I'm about to get a pair of Haz 18v pres for my CR and my NS2A. Trembling with excitement :D
