Take a look at the NS-2-JA-R. It's another very underrated Spector model. USA-spec neck dimensions, Two SC pups. $899 new at Sam Ash. Still selling elsewhere for $1350 to $1400. OTOH, $800 for a like-new ReBop is a good deal.

I was going to get my son a Rebop as there is a great deal I found. Then I came across this...


Are they that horrible? They have a tonepump in them which is a pretty hot pre. I have read where folks hate those EMG-HZ p'ups.. I'm just really concerned as I was about pull the trigger on it, then read that post. Zero lows compared to a J bass????
Anyone have anything they can add? I realize it's not in the same ballpark as my USA Neck-Thru, but it is a Euro (bolt-on) Spector... one would think still a fine instrument?

I play a Rebop 4 - and couldn't be happier. The tonepump is all I use - I leave my amp flat for the most part (with compression about 50 %, so maybe 3:1 ratio), with a touch of bass boost - but I mainly control my tone from the pre (I slapped a set Elixir lights on the Rebop a few months ago, and the strings still sound brilliant).

The neck is amazing to me. With a good set up, the action is low, the low end sound is beefy yet tight. Such a smooth player.

$800 is pretty good for 'like new'. Mine is several years old and I got it for $600. Worth every penny to me.

Whoever wrote that about them clearly wasnt playing it properly set up or had the eq pulled all the way back..

Every Spector I've played has had lots of warmth to it...

One slight problem, The strap buttons are coming loose after shows. I'm using the strap locks that came with it. Anyone else have that problem?

I have that happen. It is usually a result of my simulated B-bender move (guitarist has a B-bender...). Anybody have a cure for this? The strap buttons that is...

If it's the Dunlop Strap button setup, replace with the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] or Grover type. The Dunlop system sucks.. doesn't lend much confidence.

Can anyone tell me what kind of wrench is needed to adjust the truss rod of the NS-4CRFM? I tried 5mm and it loosely fits. 6mm is too big. I'll try 7/32".

It should be a Metric wrench, not a US Standard wrench.
The 5mm should be the right wrench.

Just to chime in on this... in the record heat yesterday (113 degrees in downtown LA)... I missed this conversation.

Zero low-end compaired to a J? He's tone deaf or perhaps just wanting to sound dramatic because he can't handle the active tone control... passive/passive to passive/active can sometimes freak a person out. And yes, the TonePump is very hot. I've turned mine down *using the trim pot on the TonePump unit itself... to 1/2 way and it's wicked sweet.

There's nothing wrong with a ReBop. I've been thinking about picking up a ReBop5DLX-EX lately.

$800 is a good deal. Your son would be STOKED! That's a sweet guitar to get as a gift.

I cannot stand the Dunlop Straplocks. They were on my NS-2JA-R just long enough for my to get it out of the box and unscrew them. And the "Dual Design" straplocks aren't really any better. I replaced those off my ARC6 with Schallers as well.

I like the Schaller Straplocks. A superior product to Dunlop's.

I thought so. The fact that 5mm fits loosely means the nut may be stripped (SIGH...).

Whats the best preamp to put in my Euros? I'm thinking the Delano 2band pre-amp, as Spector wont answer my mails about shipping for the USA 9v preamps, hehe..

Mabye I'll try one more time before I give up and go for something else when I can aford it, but I want at least my 4string to be able to sound like Eddie Jackson's tone on Empire

I put the 18v Hazlab in my Euro 5. Sounds great with the DC40's.

I cannot stand the Dunlop Straplocks. They were on my NS-2JA-R just long enough for my to get it out of the box and unscrew them. And the "Dual Design" straplocks aren't really any better. I replaced those off my ARC6 with Schallers as well.

Ok. So I auditioned my Warwick Corvette 5er last night at rehearsal. Man, the pre is WEAK compared to my Rebop. The German Corvette has an active/passive push/pull volume knob, and there's stacked treble/bass - I had them both on full. Yes the difference is noticeable, but the midrange punch is missing. (Spectors have great midrange punch). The Tonepump blows the Wick's pre out of the water. I do like the tone and feel of the Wick (other than the beefy 'C' shape neck), but after last night's rehearsal, I'm really, REALLY leaning towards a Rebop DLX.

Warwicks are not bad for what they are. But they are no Spector. The Corvette isn't a bad bass. But as you pointed out, it lacks some of the tonal refinements of the Spector.

I have to say that the Deep Socket Neck Insert Stuart invented (yes... he was the first to ever create a deep pocket neck) is awesome because you can get sustain (not as much as a neck-thru) and still get that bolt-on neck feel.

Besides my well documented objections to some of WW's business practices through the years, I've found their guitars to be... well... just not as good as many other brands.

And the ReBop5DLX is a great bass. I'm wanting to play/test one of the new NS-5MM bolt-ons... with the EMG MM pickup like what goes in the Stingray. I had a Stingray once. Great bass. I got rid of it to finance the purchase of a Spector.

I think you'd not regret the ReBop. That might be my next purchase honestly. A ReBop5DLX. I need a 5-string. Or as my wife says... I WANT a 5-string. My needs really have nothing to do with it.

Dummy pot. According to Specor and HazLab they don't make a mid control for that pre even though theres a mid connection on the board. If you know of one hit me back. Perhaps EMG has something that would be of use?
