@ bobunit - ...that's a beautiful headstock!

@JPSBassist - your extra contribs as an added (pro bono) addition to this forum have been convienient. No reason to keep the crew busy while the webmaster can lend a hand to the community.

@ Nashville - I've played my semi-recent Spector - EURO5XL- Poplar Burl down on Lower Broad....it's been a big hit with fans and sound guys alike!

I now own 3 Spectors...all 4 strings though. I want a 5 and I actually want a Legend Classic. I am wondering...is the body itself any larger on the 5's?

Yes and no.

In regards to body size for a neck-thru model... the wings are the same size. The neck is obviously wider to accomodate the 5 strings. So yes the body is a little wider but the main body elements are the same.

On the bolt-on and set neck designs it's basically the same thing. Yes the body is a little wider, but the horns, length and thickness are the same.

Thanks. I started as a member of this community before I became the webmaster for Spector. So I was already here and had seen the great dialog that happens here among Spector owners.

So I feel you guys are a valuable resource for information regarding Spector basses, past and present.

I was inspired to do the "Past Models" section of the site because of this forum.

You guys rock. :bassist:

She arrived today...
I'm thrilled.

OMG... the 18v Tone Control system is SO SWEET! I mean I love the tone I get out of this bass.

And the action is SO LOW!

Very, very different than my Euro. The neck profile is different and side by side if I didn't know better I'd think my NS-4 was a 35" scale. It's a very different beast.

And it sounds SO BEAUTIFUL!

Audio clips will come a little later.

I'm curious though, three knobs?
That's the typical USA configuration. Vol/Blend/Concentric Bass & Treble +/- .
...I find the 4 knob diamond configuration is much more aesthetically pleasing than the 3 with one stacked.
Me too, oddly enough. But I've never been a big fan of concentric controls period, unless absolutely necessary.

Holy **** man...

Really does make the Euro seem like so much less in comparison.

Well... to be fair... no. Side by side they are both really stunning. The body shapes are 100% identical.

The necks are different. The USA neck is wider and funny... the NS-2JA-R's neck is closer to the NS-4's neck than either my NS-2A or my Euro4LX. Very, very similar.

It's really little things that make this guitar feel different. The bridge on the NS-4 is superior. Heavy, SOLID, you can feel the difference. And my NS-4 has the new bridge WITH INTONATION SCREWS!!! How awesome is that to finally have an easy way to setup the Spector bridge.

The Gotoh G7 tuners are much easier to work with. They are really smooth and because their shaft is considerably thicker than the Schaller tuners, much less effort is needed to quickly dial in the right tuning.

Jimmy Eppard did a custom setup for me. And the strings are incredibly low to the neck. The neck is at optimal relief and so much less effort is needed to press the strings down and it's so nice that nothing buzzes. Not one fret.

The inlays are perfect. Beautiful. The Double S on the headstock is Abalone... matching the crown inlays. And in all the finish is flawless. And whereas the finish on my Euro is near flawless... the finish on the NS-4 is breathtaking.

In all... does it make the Euro model seem like it's not on the same level. NO. There is very little difference. The difference between the Euro and USA is much less than the difference between the Euro and Legend models. If anything, I appreciate my Euro a little more.

It's strange but side-by-side the Euro and the USA look like siblings.

So I can say that they are both really, really nice instruments.

The main difference is the tone. Wow. The 18v tone control is really, really powerful. But not in a loud way... it's deep and rich and it just sounds... ahhhh...

Perhaps it's the wider aperture EMG DC pups that help. But the tone out of the NS-4 is smooth and almost milky at one end, sharp and clear on the other.

It's going to be a fun weekend. I'm working on a new NIN track. So I'm stoked to have this baby in my arsenal.

I haven't cracked her open yet, but perhaps the knob arrangement has to do with available space due to the 18v setup. The batteries have their own compartment, but perhaps it's a little cramped for 4 knobs...

I agree. But then again the three knobs set the NS-4 and NS-5XL, 6XL models apart from their Euro counterparts. Which for me when I have to look at a photo and try to figure out what the model is... is a major help.

Whats the best preamp to put in my Euros? I'm thinking the Delano 2band pre-amp, as Spector wont answer my mails about shipping for the USA 9v preamps, hehe..

Maby I'll try one more time before I give up and go for something else when I can aford it, but I want atleast my 4string to be able to sound like Eddie Jackson's tone on Empire :p

Except that, up until a few years ago, all the USA's NS's (Spector Mach I, Kramer, SSD and early Spector Mach II's) had the same 4 knob configuration unless it was an early NS or a special settup. ;)

Perhaps I should have been more clear... I was talking about the current Woodstock Era instruments.

The 3 knob 18v models do date back to 1994-95 with the first USA 18v models. Namely the NS-4 (which remained the NS-4 after the trademarks were recovered) and some NS-5XL models.
