I thought so, too. but I'm having a bit of trouble getting the fretboard and neck to absorb more stain. I think the cleaner I applied to try to remove the soot is repelling it or sealed the wood a bit. It took some of the stain and actually looks more brown and almost matches the body color. I just can't seem to get a good pic in florescent lighting.:(

I have not used that product before... I may have to sand it down and reapply the ebony again. :hmm:
I have not ever tried to stain a fretboard, either. I'm not sure if it's sealed too. might be why it's not blackening up.

The top section that I sanded a bit took it pretty good.

The middle and lower where I didn't sand it isn't absorbing the ebony stain as much.

Spector (like most other guitar manufacturers) probably puts oil on their non-maple fingerboard to help prevent them from drying out. Since the oil soaks into the wood, it would be very difficult to stain the fingerboard after it has been oiled. The top section probably had most of the oil burned off in the fire. That's why it seemed to work in that area.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. Wanted a 2nd opinion.;)
I'm kinda liking the color on the back. not "black" not "brown woodsy stain":)
I don't really wanna take a Torch-O-Matic to the fretboard just to make it all black.:eyebrow:
I may or may not keep trying to stain it and just gt with the natural fade to black look. :cool:

Or...you could replace the fretboard wood with either ebony, rosewood or Birdseye! :D There's a challenge for ya! And make it fretless?

HA! Iiiiiiiii don't play fretless,..
though there is a really nice Ibby SR400FL (fretless) down the street for 150.00.... Which I would mind modifying the neck heel to fit the "2J" that would be :cool: , No?

I don't have the tools to do a FB refit. I sold what I needed about 3 months ago .... :kmita:

Nooooooooooo! Not a "Frankenbass" made from a Spector! That'd be blasphemy!!! You'd lose your Spector club # and be shunned for life! Lol ;D
