+1HA! It's the I want the best of both worlds thing...
Well, Of course....
In regards to how strings look... metal is metal is metal to me. I'm not a fan of the new coated stuff... just because the only set I tried (a free-demo from NAMM) the strings sounded a little muted or flat. Cool if you want your bass strings to glow in the dark or under a black light or whatever.
Now that kind of flashy I could go for, I do like black-light GITD stuff....
I'm just not so into that high glossy finish or chrome flash on my bass. One of the reasons I like my 2J, it has a matte finish.
Now, chrome on my Semi-truck - oh yeah - whoop whoop, truck 'em up!
For me that's as far as I go concerning how they look... for me it's about the sound. So I agree with you about flashy being something to consider.
As far as SP strings being bright... they're honestly no brighter than any other nickel or stainless strings I've tried (D'Addario, SIT, Dunlop).
Right. I meant compared to the coated strings..
I prefer nickel. Stainless is too bright for my tastes. And it's so rough on your fingers and on your fingerboard. Like a buzz saw depending on how hard you press down. You are correct, Sir. I have noticed that myself.
The main thing for me is how much difference I've heard in the various chrome flat sets I've purchased in the past. And of course I liked the black nylon flats that RotoSound makes. The 88 series. They were really nice strings. I don't care for that "thumpy" a sound at this point. But if I wanted to go that way I know they'd do the job well.
Yes, they do seem to vary a good deal from maker to maker.
I think I had a set of Rotos a while back.... Nylon somebodies, anyway
Post what you think after you try them out. That's one of the things about Bass Player Live and NAMM I love. I come home with a dozen sets of "demo" strings to try out.
No NAMM out here on the west coast....
And just extraneous info... nothing other than a personal experience... Eddie Speedy, the CEO of SIT Strings is an awesome/cool guy. It's a family owned business here in the USA and he's the third generation in his family to run it. A sincerely cool guy. I use SITs on my ARC6 and if in a pinch I'd use SITs on my basses.
I must be a bit further out of the loop than I thought, I don't think I have heard of them...
Yes, yes he did..... this has to go to America's Funniest Celebrity Bloopers...Did he just say that's his Spector American made bass? Lolwut
Unless he had a USA Spector made to look just like a Legend 5... ??

So just been jamming the latest BTB&M EP, and I was wondering does anyone know what Spectors Dan is currently using or what he recorded with? His tone is at least IMO pretty different than earlier recordings (and more fitting to their overall sound also) so just curious if he was still jamming Legends or what.
He has and plays an NS 2000/5 on all of the BTBAM records he has appeared on. Some sections were played on other basses, like a Steinberger on Great Misdirect. He also owns an NS 5 Redwood, but he never plays it live.
Hes wrong in the video, the NS 2000/5 is Korean made and was the precursor to the Legends.
I should be going to see them tonight![]()
... not always cause somethings NEED to be said....
Awright! Yeah that makes much more sense. I had a Legend 5 Custom and it never sounded that good!
The 2000/5's are still some of my fave all-time Spectors so that's cool he's rocking it. I keep meaning to pick one up sometime.
Nice!! Report back how it is. I really like these guys even if it's something I can't listen to all the time, every day ya know.![]()
Yeah I thought the NS2000/5s were the NTs, like you stated.
Interesting comparison, as I found them to be a good bit different but I know to each their own. The Legend didn't sound BAD by any means when I tracked w/ it and yeah all the studio magic that does into a processed/mastered/EQ'd tone is always a bit of work but I considered the NS2000's to have a pretty noticeable gap compared to the Legends. I think I just never got comfy with that bolt-on design and different shaped neck is most of it.
Did you find that there was a considerable difference in the shape of the neck? If anything I found the Legend to be a tad more comfortable over the NS. The fret spacing and general shape/contour of the neck felt almost exactly the same, however the string spacing was a little closer on the NS. Not necessarily good or bad, just different.
I think I prefer the sound of a bolt on or set neck over a neck through in general, which again pushes back towards a Legend. I find them more punchy, more growly and have more attitude. Not to say the NS 2000/5 doesnt have it, this is characteristic of all Spectors in general, but I found it more present in the Legend.
Well that would seem to answer the last part of my previous post. Due to it being a bolt on the Rebop 5 body doesn't get any wider than the Rebop 4. It is just routed apropriately for the 5 string neck and pups. They gave you the Spector 4 string case for it because the 5 string case is built for the wider neck thru 5 strings and would have been too loose. My legend 4 fit snuggly into my Rebop 5 case. Couldn't believe it!
Not a ReBop. It's a Euro4, but the body size would be the same.MY GOD! that six string looks a bit mongoloid! next the rebop...jk

So the Rebops, like the Legends, also have the universal (4 string) body size.
Here you can see the Legend 6 is about the same size as a 4 string.
While a neck thru 6 is obviously much wider.
So if you're ordering the proper case for any Legend or Rebop, regardless of the number of strings, order the 4 string case.
JPS...Were you referring to SS rounds being brighter? Because I know SS FW are not bright at all and that's why I prefer them for the deep thunderous tone. And SS FW's are super easy on my fingers and frets. It's like playing on smoooth silk.![]()
