The closest current model it would resemble, and this is kind of a stretch, would be a U.S. NS2 and again that's regarding tonewoods. The NS2As were equipped with Spector branded EMG Select pickups and an import knockoff of the HAZ Labs preamp so tonally it wouldn't compare to anything current. A set of real deal EMG P/Js along with the stock preamp fixes that. It's a great bass made even better with the EMG upgrade.

That's some help. Thanks. :) So do you think it would be worth getting this over a Legend, all things being equal?

Oh and what makes the Spector branded PJ's different? Are they like HZ's or SSD's rather than regular EMG's?

For me personally, I'd take ans NS2A over a Legend in a second and that's not to say I don't like the Legend either. I think most of the models in that series are decent mid grade axes but let me put it this way, if Spector put the NS2A out today (Korean made as it was back then), I think that it would sell for closer in price to the Euro line than the Legend just by virtue of the fact that they're all maple with neck through construction (and with Schaller tuners at that). At the prices NS2As go for on the used market today the choice is easy for me. I'm actively seeking a white NS2A to go with my black one and if I'm lucky enough to find one, I'll most likely be paying less for it than a new Legend (other than the blowout Legend deals I've been seeing online).

As far as the Stock pickups are concerned, they're pretty much in line with the Current HZs since they're passive. They actually sound pretty good minus a preamp but in no way sound as "good" as the active EMGs and just to complicate the matter further, it's claimed by aficionados that the more recently made active EMGs don't sound as good as the older ones. They sound awesome to me though and I'm not going to agonize over that issue.

If you like Spectors, the NS2A is sure to satisfy, IMHO.

Thanks, that's some help. However I did find out that the necks are more like a Euro, so it's most likely out of the running. Those are just too D shaped for me.

I agree with Thundar on the "killing me"! Just checked the site, and there are 3 left, and it's $10 cheaper.

I've been wanting a new bass, though I'd have it a neck-thru if I can get it. Still it's a Spector, and it's really affordable. Gettin' twitchy here...

You know, Pat, it can vary from bass to bass. I had a black one that had a surprisingly thin neck. I A/B'd it to my US NS-2 and the 2A had a slightly slimmer profile. I probably played that one more than the NS-2, especially since I didn't want anything to happen to it since it was really nice.

BTW, what's the asking price of the 2A and do you have pics?

Here's a Youtube clip of Metallica at Monsters of Rock 1995 (Donnington). They're playing a medley of older stuff and Newsted's got his Spector. And Hetfield's still got the mullet LOL.



In other news, I've still got the NS4CRFM and still think it's the absolute best sounding Spector I have ever heard. Still feels good to play too! :D
