Spector Club Pt. 5 (Insert Clever Title Here)

I was going to mention Kip, but usually Gene Simmons is enough to get people on TB. :D

I don't remember Kip playing a white Spector. I'm pretty sure all Kip played was a red NS2 and black (with sticker stripes) NS2A. When I saw them play a club (after OZZY's tour was cancelled), he just played those 2 Spectors you see in the videos.

A few months later when Seventeen hit and they got on the Cinderella tour, he already switched over to Jacksons. So he really didn't play Spectors much.

There's nothing wrong with Gene OR Kip!! :bassist:

Actually, Kip did have a white NS2A.... I have a picture somewhere of him with one...

I got this Spector Rebop (I believe) around March and love it but I never was able to find out the model, construction, etc. I was wondering if any of you guys would be of any help.

The serial number is NB2361

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Looks like an early ReBop 5 model. The absence of neck inlays is a give-away. Newer ReBop models have the same Spector neck inlays as the EuroLX models. MOP.

It was made in the Czech Rebublic.

With the newer models it's pretty easy to decode the model numbers.

If the model ends in FM, that's Figured Maple. The type of wood top.

If it ends in EX, that's Exotic Woods. Like Zebra Wood, etc...

You can always shoot the serial number over to Spector and PJ should be able to give you a date it left the factory.

Nice bass. I'm still want to try a ReBop.

I looked on my NS5CRFM, can't find a "Crafted in.." or serial number anywhere.?

Another noob question --

D'Addario website says "34 to 36 D'Addario Long" and I bought two sets of very thick long scale strings to fit my C# Standard tuning. None of the strings were long enough on my Lakland or my Spector.

Maybe they sent me a set with the wrong label... but..... they're singles, all individually packed, and none were long enough.
What length would I need for this baby? And the noobiest of them all -- is there anything wrong if I were to get them Super Long and the bass was only Long Scale?

I could have sworn so, but I checked all of their videos and live footage I could remember. It's likely some performance my brain is lapsing on...

I"ll shoot em an e-mail. I was mostly wondering about the wood used for the body and neck to properly condition it. When i purchased it the store didn't know the specifications.

The "First Generation" ReBops made from 2002 - 2004 (as I like to refer to them as opposed to the DLX "Second Generation" models) have a solid Alder body, 3-piece Maple neck and Rosewood fretboard with Dot Inlays. I owned an oil-finished Natural ReBop four-string before selling it to fund my DLX EX Zebrawood-topped 4-string, and used Warwick's Link Removed on the body and neck while I owned it, but I'm pretty sure there are other products you can use to protect the finish. Good call in dropping PJ @ Spector an email or call: he'll be able to answer just about any question a person has about their basses.

I just put a set of D'addario ProSteels on my "ZeBop" 5-string after a string broke (only my second breakage in just about 20 years of playing  ), realized I had no "Super Long Scale" 5-string sets and had to use a "Long Scale" set. They just made it across the nut before hitting the windings, but your results may vary as I play ReBops which may have the bridge moved closer to accommodate the 35"-scale 5-strings (which I doubt, but believe was discussed a few pages back). I'd email or phone D'addario's Customer Service: they've very good with problems and once you explain your situation I'd be very surprised if you didn't get a replacement set of "SLS"-strings.

Where did you order the strings from that you got all of them in "Singles" packaging? (...unless you ordered the single strings right from the D'addario page) That's very odd, unless your "Heavy" set was Custom-made with single strings and they were all Long Scales. If you can post what set of strings (for example, EPS-230) you ordered and where from, that's help sold this particular mystery.

And the noobiest of them all -- is there anything wrong if I were to get them Super Long and the bass was only Long Scale?

The worst thing that could happen is that you'd have to trim more excess string before winding them on - I get SLS for all my 5-string/35" basses (back when I owned a 35"-scale 4-string) by habit, so I'm sure they'll be no problems if I have to use them on a borrowed bass, lend them to a friend, find myself with a 36"-scale bass, etc

YES. I like this MORE than the regular quilted amber. (I gathered from your post it is quilt over flame?)
I have found my finish!

This is Quilted Maple with an Amber finish (Amberburst... Spector has been loose in listing this and other finishes). The "quilt" may be different then others, but that's the nature of working with wood - no two instruments are going to have the exact same top. And given that *you* have a Flamed Maple finish (which, IMO, I'd simply have touched up and stay with the Transparent Red you've got - it's a GREAT red!) you're not going to have a Quilted top unless you a) have the Flamed top stripped off and a Quilted made (which given the Spector's curved body would be a large amount of ca$h is possible to do at all) or b) sell your bass to buy one with a Quilted top, in which the Great Deal™ you got would be for nothing.

There's nothing wrong with Gene OR Kip!! :bassist:
Agreed. I freely admit if it weren't for Gene and those early walking basslines, I'd have never touched a bass.

Actually, Kip did have a white NS2A.... I have a picture somewhere of him with one...
I don't remember that. Pretty cool if you could find it. I was in the front for their club show I saw and remember being disappointed the cool black NS2A with stripes were simply stickers. He also removed all the finish of both basses from the back of the necks which I don't believe was done at the time the videos were shot.

You want SL (Super Longs) for your 35" scale Spectors, however, do not use them on your 34" scale Spectors. The thick outer winding will hit your tuning peg for your E and/or B string, causing stability and tuning issues.

I'd like to see what a paint-on quilt would look like over a flame. ;)

Yes, Hold on.

I though super long scale but they don't sell them in nickels, except for the G#/C# (B/E)

I would like to see a paint on quilt on any bass...

I've established that's not possible. But it sounds like if you had the artistic skills a transparent paint with some shading of a quilt over a flame..

Weird.

Now all we need is plaid maple. :p

well i am glad you were that one that established ;)

if you're hell bent on having a quilt... have someone shave the top of that bass and slap on a veneer of quilted maple :hiding:

I wish they still made the Super Long in a 6-string set in Nickel. They still make 6string SLs in Steel though.

How odd - they must know that at least 50% of their players *don't* use ProSteels, so there has to be some type of market testing they've done that says it's not worth the creation/packaging/advertising/etc. But what's even more stunning is that they don't make a SLS Single String in the high-C range (.028, .032, .035) to at least make it possible to complete a set. I'd drop them a line - I've always have good responses by their Customer Service.

...as opposed to Musician's Friend, to when I informed that they don't carry any ProSteel sets in Super Long Scale including their mainstay EPS-170-5SL 5-string SLS set, informed me that "I could place a Special Order for over $100 worth of strings and they'd be happy to get them for me. Umm, no thanks - I'll simply give [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] my string business from now on... which has increased a great deal as I've improved my bass collection to the point that I can hear "Living" strings vs "Dead" ones far more easily and are changing them as such. Typically a better deal from them anyway as well as a "Local" Music Business to support. ;)
