I've actually played a Rebop 5er that was very similar to yours, with the zebrano top and everything. Its more stunning in person than any pic will show. Quite a beauty you have there.

Yeah, it's a funny top to photograph, that was about as good as I could get in my girlfriends flat given that the lighting wasn't ideal, but I still think it's a nice photo!

I really dig the way the bridge has "Spector" engraved on the side too, very nice!

Hi alembic

no I don't think i would change the system it works great for me, so I don't see a reason to change. I have a euro myself. Are you unhappy with the tone? what made you think of changing?

Don't know if this is the same for you, but

For some reason, the volumes on mine (bridge and neck) seem to be very touchy, meaning once I turn either volume a 1/8 turn, any more that I turn up does not get any louder than the 1/8 turn.
Thats just one aspect. The other would be having some mid-range control and I'd rather have boost and cut, instead of boost only.

 I feel the same way about the crappy Tone-Pump.

I cannot wait to swap for an Aggy.

I know this is ot, but any of you guys swap out the stock electronics (tone pump or not) and use the "emg bqs system"?

I've got a euro 5 w/ the tone pump ( don't get me wrong, it sounds very good) and was considering the bqs, to enable midrange manipulation.

I will be swapping my Tonepump Jr in my Legend 5 with a complete EMG set up, 40P & J and BQS. I want the midrange availability as well and would also like the ability to roll off treble. The stock set up is good, but I would like a little more flexibility.

For the most of the time I have both pickups full blast, only ocasionaly I reduce a quarter on the bridge or on the neck.

and i can notice the tone diference when doing that. mind you i'm not a fidly bass player, I tend to use the same settings on my Ampeg (sold, my new F1 has arrived today) and roll the above change in a couple songs, I sometimes have to adjust the bass and treble but that's not very often.

I haven't had a chance to give it a full workout yet, but the initial feedback is very positive with my EMG upgrade. The 40P is a very deep and full sounding pickup, the 40J seems thinner soloed, combined it is a very full, modern sound. I have it wired 18 volys, so the output is still high, but the boost/cut on the bass and treble and the variable mid offer much more variety and control over the tone. My Legend 5 is now a perfect, all around bass.

My new 4LX-35 Black Stain

how are the euros i have been intrested in one but am poor and dont have the money for that kind of price right now. ive messed with them at GC but thats hardly a guage of an instrument.

Right at the top of the heap for mass-produced instruments. The older models, prior to the Euro LX, are much cheaper on the used market and can be stolen if you look around enough. I got my early 2000's NS5CRFM used from GC for $500 because it had a few dings(none visible from more than 3 ft. away), gnarly old strings, and a dead battery. Once I gave it a good polishing, fresh batteries, and some DR Lo-Riders, it was one of the sickest 5ers I have ever heard or played. I could probably sell for $800 if I wanted to. It has a thick, rich tone with lots of growl, but its not that hard to get a warm, smooth tone out of it as well. It might be my perfect bass if it wasn't so heavy :hmm: . But, I love it in spite of its heaviness and have found that its the perfect compliment to my Fender Jazz.

I really prefer the EMG BTS preamp in my bass and other Spectors of this era to the Tonepump pre that they use today. The Tonepump sounds good, but the EMG is more flexable and easier to use than the Tonepump IMO. The Tonepump is boost-only and it runs really hot, which can lead to really bad tones if the user doesn't really know how to use it. The EMG is a boost/cut which work really well to compliment the EMG 40DCs that come with these basses. So, that is another advantage to the older Spectors IMO, in addition to them being less expensive.
