From my post back at #64:
I suspect there is a point that you cannot cant the pickup(s) further as the poles will no longer properly align to the strings. Ideally they would order, or build, custom pups with the poles canted to match the fret angle and then they would mate up nicely.
The magnetic paper appears to show they went beyond the maximum cant angle while using the standard pickups.

I assume this as speculation though as I have not seen inside either the Dingwall or Fishmans when in a fanned setup as such.

I think that’s a safe guess. Dingwall knew they had to custom spec for their design. Nordstrand offers Dingwall style designs for “standard” 18 or 19mm parallel fret basses, so it’s probably a fair guess that you can’t just rotate the Dingwall pickups and drop them in another design.

Man, what a wild sequence of events. To be honest, the more I've listened to PU comparisons around the web, I sorta feel like the Fishman Fluence was just a bad choice overall. The EMG pickups before seem to have a lot more punch and life to 'em if you ask me.

Meanwhile, a couple of Spector sponsored folks over on YouTube are touting it as their favorite recent bass, so they're gonna sell a bunch of these that have a pretty glaring problem.

I mean, everyone is excited for the Spector NS body with the multi scale neck. They probably need to just do a different model with different pickups in them.

I’m so glad that I found this post.
I’m really sorry for the inconvenience about the pickups, but it some way it just confirm what my luthier told me.
At the moment they are my favourites pickups. I have them on my esp ltd f1004. I wanted a 5 strings but the esp ltd f1005 comes only with 17mm and I really don’t like it. Checked other basses in 5 strings with fishman fluence and all of them comes with 17mm spacing.
So I went to my luthier and asked him for a build project (5 strings 19mm) and he told me that especially at the bridge position it will be possible that the pickup won’t be wide enough or the pole will be just under the outside strings.
Few weeks ago I was pulling the trigger on this new Spector but checking the specs (18mm at bridge) and seeing the picture of how close the strings are to the pickups edge I was really hesitant and I didn’t.
It’s a pity because I really love those pickups and I was really happy to see them on a fanned frets.
Hope Spector will solve the problem

This is some evidence.

This picture is super-clear and it really seems likes a design flaw. Thanks so much for sharing it.
It might not have an actual impact on the player but still it doesn't look great on a 2k bass.
Probably for a fanned fret bass you really need a longer pickup (5 string pickup for a 4 string one) or a shorter string spacing.

Do you know if a significantly cheaper bass like the Ibanez EHB has the same issue?

Wow, well I guess this one’s probably crossed off my list then. Weird to change pickups for the first multiscale foray in the first place, and then there’s physical issues with the build design?! Yea that’s ridiculous on a $2k instrument.

It's a real shame. Everything else about the bass is fantastic. I'll be sure to post how the replacement is.
