I can usually get a Skwyer Affinity for about $100 at my local Music Go Round. IMHO even $150 is too much.

Yea I didn't get the Affinity. Instead, I got the Squier Standard J for $130.
There you go.
Now, do yourself a favor and don't go all crazy thinking about upgrades and just play it for a bit.
This website will rip your wallet apart.

UPDATE
Got the standard home, checked the serial and its a 2000 model from Indonesia. Opened it up to check the wiring, tightened the nuts on the knobs and jack, then restrung it with the Hybrid Slinky's I use and it sounds so good. exactly what I was looking for.
