I have had my CV 11 months now. Its being turned into the ultimate sleeper as we speak. I have had 3 sets of pickups in it, 3 sets of pots, 4 pick guards on it (including original) and various strings. I am still tweaking it and setting it up but pics will follow shortly. Its taken about a year but I think I finally got it perfect!

Btw its going to look almost 100% stock to the untrained eye and I still have only about $200 , maybe under that into it.

I haven't used my CV's for a few months now. Since getting my VM PJ that's become my gigging bass. It does still have the CV Jazz neck on it though.
I modded both my CV's, and each mod made them even better, but the one thing I couldn't mod (or was never willing to pay for) was to change the colour of the P. I just never clicked with that colour, even though I gigged exclusively with that bass for about 3 years.
It's not gong anywhere though, neither is the Jazz and I still smile when I pick those basses up.

I played my CV Precision (red with original Fender Precision pickup and roundwounds) today at band practice for the first time in forever. It sounded great and was fun to play.


One of my bandmates plays a new CV Telecaster that sounds fantastic.

Looks like there will be a new color in production for this line available on GC and MF. I remember reading about an FSR version available at long and mcquade, but the stock photos look very different. Both GC and MF advertise the new version as gold, I'm thinking by the looks of things shoreline?

After I had two Jazzis I thought it was time for another try to play a Preci as well. So I sold my VM 70s NT Jazzi and bought a CV 60s Precision in sonic blue which is hard to get in Germany (I guess they all keep their basses and don't sell them, that's why).
Now I have my James Johnston Jazzi (love it) and the blue Preci. Really nice basses those two. Who needs anything else?

Has anyone tried a hum canceling pup such as Lindy Fralins or David Allan's?

Does shielding the cavities do much to calm any hum issues?
I've shielded all my other guitars and basses with positive results.

I have Fralins in my Fiesta Red CV-P 60's and i love it...!

I just pre-ordered a CV Jazz in black from MF. The ship date is May .

I sold my Fender MIA jazz back in '05 and bought a stingray. I also own a proper sterling (BFR Roasted). I missed the jazz and heard great things about the CV line. I also didn't want to spend another grand on a bass.

I could have gotten white but I prefer black. I hope it's only a color difference and not anything else. The new gold P has a bridge cover on the website.

Does anybody have a definitive answer to if there are any tuners out there that would just drop into my 60s CV Jazz and Precision? I read through the whole "direct replacement squier parts" thread and wound up more confused!

Drop perfectly into the existing holes? Pretty positive one of the sets of hipshots would.There not going to be cheap at all but you cant get better tuners. Personally I have owned over 200 basses, My CV is modded yet the tuning machines stay stock, the hipshots are great but the CV tuners really are not that far off.

Reading through the other thread it seems like the HB-1 and HB-7 are good candidates. Price is not too bad either.

The tuners on mine have some play and are not precise as I would like them (i.e. some movements will have no effect on the tuning, some movements will suddenly move the note much more)

I don't really like the fake tort that comes standard- does anyone know if standard fender PGs will fit?

So, what's wrong with the CV tuners?

The ones on my JJ are fine. The ones on the precision have a lot of play to them- sometimes a turn will feel "loose" and not much make much difference in tuning... then suddenly it will catch the gears and tune the pitch up unexpectedly. I just like a more steady tuner.

This might also be due to the light tension of the TIs I have on the P-bass though... not sure.

Loosen the big screw in the center of the gear. Sounds like there is too much drag on it. Also, always tune up to pitch, never down. If you have to go down take it flat and then back up. This along with the right amount of drag will keep the gears engaged with each other.

Old style open gears need occasional maintenance with a screw driver.

During my last string change, I noticed that one of the gear's screw backed out, so I put a little "schmeer" of LocTite on each screw (a very small amount) and reinstalled them. I prefer the LocTite medium strength "Quick Stix", which is like a paste or gel; just a little dab'll do ya!

I have a sonic blue CV Precision strung with flats that I got from a fellow TB'er. It looks and sounds perfect with my surf band. When I use a pick it sounds exactly like what I hear on old TV and movie soundtracks. It's a great bass for that stuff I think.
