Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

Even though my 70’s P was good I decided to do a couple mods and I’m glad I did. I installed a Hipshot Kickass and EMG GZR pickups. Then I put on some Rotosound RS77LD’s and set it up good enough to plug into my Rumble 40 and play some Lizzy. It feels good and sounds good and I’m sure when I dial it in I’ll be loving it. Man, these CV’s are really darn good and I’m sure this won’t be my last.

Good call with those black pickguard screws! I put the same on mine and it just adds that little something extra :drool:

The black knobs and screws made a nice difference for sure. Did my setup and everything is good except I can’t get the intonation in on EAD but G is good. I’m really stumped but tomorrow I’ll put back on the strings that came with it to find out if that’s the problem or if it’s the bridge.

It's just a thought, but I'm wondering if your strings have a bit too much of a twist in them. It can happen when you wrap the strings around the tuning post. The strings twist, but the ball ends stay put. After reading about that issue here on TB, I suspected it was why I was having trouble setting up one of my parts-basses. So, I performed an experiment and it worked out quite well...so well that I went and did it to a few of my other basses. Sure enough, some had that slight twist. Here's what I did;
  1. Grasp the string near the headstock and start de-tuning.
  2. Maintain tension on the windings to keep them from unraveling.
  3. De-tune enough to let the ball-end get free of the bridge's backplate or notch.
  4. If there's a significant twist in the string, freeing it from the bridge should allow it to untwist.
  5. Re-tune the string.
The first time I did it, each ball-end spun at least once...one even turned almost twice. Once I'd resolved the twist, my intonation became much easier to fine-tune.

To be fair, I suspect that the design of the bridge had a hand in the strings getting twisted to such a degree. The notches for the ball-ends are very snug and really hold them in place.

You're most welcome. And while I'm glad it was just a technical glitch, I'll still stand by my advice re: untwisting strings. It's now part of my routine whenever I install new strings. One less thing to worry about and all...

Since we're segueing into "tuning and intonation" for a little bit, I should mention this fun bit o' tech...the BOSS TU-88 Micro Monitor/Tuner/Metronome. It is my absolute go-to tool, both when I'm doing setups and playing around the house;

It allows me to dial in good tuning/intonation and even better, is also a great, super-portable headphone amplifier. (My wife is a professional artist who works from home, has all-consuming A.D.D. and is prone to migraines. Earthshaking noises would result in my eventual and untimely disappearance! :dead:) Sadly, it's been discontinued for quite some time, but used and (somewhat overpriced) new models can be found online.

There's a chance it might be a bit snug. Too snug? I couldn't say. I put a CIC Classic Vibe Jazz neck onto a no-name brand bass body and the fit was fine after a wee bit of sanding of the neck pocket. However, when I sold the body, the buyer said his Warmoth neck didn't fit.

I did swap my previous CIC CV60P neck with MIM Player P maple neck without problem. Neck screw holes all well align and no gap issue. Both neck has pretty close profile meanwhile player neck has little narrow on nut width.
