Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V -- Unbelieveable Bass!

Here's a shot at a recent gig with me posing out. ;) It's truly an awesome looking bass on stage.

BTW, I want to upgrade the pickups. They're alright, but obviously like most less expensive instruments, they're the bottleneck. I really want to keep that clean and modern Eddie Jackson/Marcus Miller on steriods tone. I was wondering if EMG made pickups that would fit these basses. I'm a Bart guy, but I think these basses would benefit from EMGs, which I don't know much about. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure EMG makes pickups that will fit--they seem to be just regular J size--but the problem I've found with EMG J's on the couple of wide-spaced Warmoth 5's I had is that the magnetic field is not wide enough to pick up the G and B strings very well. If I were looking at replacement pickups on one of these puppies, I'd probably try Sadowsky.

Great pics, by the way--I love the clean look of the white version!

These pups are not the standard (Fender) 5-string J-bass size. That said, I believe that the DiMarzio Ultra-Jazz 5's are a direct drop in -- check their dimensions to be sure.

a little off-topic,,
i just did a blues jam yesterday in Petaluma, & the " house " bass player was playin a sweet vintage "65 P bass that he bought new,,, playing thru a 700rb 210 cab,, i plug in & immediately have to drop the master vol down to like 8, this Squier sounds SO Sweet,,
after the gig was over,, he pretty much made me, :D pull my Squier back outta my bag, asking me questions about it & all,, ( i took that as a complement also ) :smug:

Thanks for the pickup suggestions, guys! Like I said, I'm a Bart guy, but I want a brighter sound with this bass as opposed to the darkert Bart sound. Actually, I've considered getting the black version too and putting Barts in it. :D

I didn't know that Sadowsky made replacement pickups. I'll definitely check those out. Also, I've always liked DiMarzio's pickups, so maybe those are the ticket. The EMGs are nice, but they'd probably be a huge PITA to install. My guitarist is a big Seymour Duncan guy. He does have a set of EMGs in a Charvel 750xl of his (he's obviously a Jackson/Charvel guy from the Jackson shirt and SLH2 he's playing in the photo ;) ), but we both agree that the Duncans have a less compressed sound and a more open midrange. I didn't think that the pickups are standard Jazz size (i.e., shorter neck/longer bridge). I always assumed they were the same size as a MIA Fender Jazz V. I'll have to do some research. Again, thanks for the info!

Actually, the pickups in the Squier look to me like the standard 4-string Jazz size, same as Sadowsky uses for the 5-string J's. The DiMarzio UltraJazz's are supposed to be similar to the Sadowskys (Sadowsky actually contracts with DiMarzio to build the humcancelling version) and are also the same size, I believe.

Bought one this morning from GC in Atlanta and returned it this afternoon. Bridge pick-up was dead on arrival. Mid pot was bent and binding against the body. No way this bass could have been played out of the box. Once tuned, severe fret buzz. Maybe I got a lemon but I was not willing to try another one.

that sometimes happens to mass produced & mass shipped basses of all kinds.

when i normally go in to buy a bass,,, i have them bring every one of them they have in stock, & pick the creme of the crop.

sounds like if you would have plugged it in, you would have caught that before you walked out with it.

BUT , don't let that dissuade your decision to pick up one of these killer basses.. :)

looks like its going to be while before I get mine.

Ordered a white DJAV from music123 on sunday (ordered with 3 day shipping so it would arrive before my family head's down to orlando for christmas). About 2 days after I placed my order, I get an email saying the bass had shipped via UPS, but was never emailed a tracking number. Sent music123 an email when I got out of bed this morning asking about the status of my bass. Went outside to walk to dog and notice a big package from music123 on my doorstep. Pick it up and realize its WAY too light to be a bass. Open up the package and inside was an acoustic-electric Ibanez guitar. Called up music123 about getting the problem fixed, they emailed me a return label, and dropped off the Ibanez at a UPS store this afternoon, the customer service rep on the phone said it should take about 3 business days for them to verify my return and another 5 or 7 to get me my bass.

The strangest thing of it all is the packing slip in the outer box said that there was a DJAV in the inner box, but there was large print on the inner box was "IBANEZ TCM60". Now I know its christmas and they must be busy, but it would seem someone would have caught this went packaging everything.

blah. :(
