Squier Jaguar Bass - WOW!

Great review of the new Squiers in the latest Bass Player magazine. They literally gush over these and mention that CNC technology is getting so good that the fit and finish of these is pretty much the same as MIA Fenders and other high end basses.

I will be buying one in the next couple of weeks or so as a backup to my backup's backup backup!:smug:

for $300 these are absolutely killer.

P.S. The PU's sound great and the bridge is fine IMO. The tuners kinda suck though. $80 upgrade.... not a big deal if you dislike the stock tuners.

Hmm. The tuners on both my VM P and J, which I am assuming are the same as the Jag's, are just fine, they work exactly like they are supposed to. Why do you say they suck?

So it can act as a P AND a J. Hmmm, interesting.

And those tone controls at the top? Treb, bass cut/boost?

Yes, I believe they can. Which is why I mentioned the SB2. You can't solo the J pickup in the SB2 without a big signal drop. That doesn't happen with this bass. Solo the P, and you get a great P bass grind. Solo the J and you get that bridge burp that I love so much.

The knobs underneath are tone controls; treble cut. They work awesome. They are very good tone controls. They don't muffle or muddy your sound...they just cut the treble. I love the controls.

Since there never was a Jaguar bass (it's a modern take-off on the Jaguar guitar) what's the vibe like? Similar to a J, a P or something else? It can't be mimicking a classic sound because the sound never existed.

I played one a while back but it didn't really resonate with me, so maybe I was missing something. At any rate, for the price that Squier's asking , I'm curious again.

Yeah, but that was released just a few years ago. There wasn't a Jaguar version back when the guitar was introduced and had it's height of popularity circa early 60's.

The jag and jazzmaster guitars were popular with the surf bands, but fell out of favor post Beatles and into the hard rock era. They regained a retro popularity in the late 90's and I believe the Fender Jag was introduced in 2006. So it's hardly a "vintage" sound.

What size neck does this have? Closer to a J neck or a P neck?

It's a 1.5" C Jazz neck. Perfect for me. Very thin, fast, and has a satin, almost natural wood, feel to the back of the neck. I much prefer this to the sticky, glossy finishes.

The pickups are very hot and aggressive. A joy to play. The Jaguar is light (8 lbs even) and pretty responsive to right hand plucking pressures - not as responsive or quite as light as my Aerodyne Jazz, but pretty close. I like this bass.

Good to know. I prefer the satin finishes. I can't stand necks that have glossy finish on them. My backup bass has one, and it annoys me after playing it for a while.

actually, all of the squier series basses can vary in weight by quite a bit, and 8lbs would be a very light one. the three jags that i've played were 9-9+ lbs.
