I just had to travel abruptly. I fixed a 'which bass to take, should I trust the regular hard-shell case in checked luggage issue' by having one of these waiting for me.

I got the silver and it's one very nice bass for the money. Mine has a nickel sized flaw in the finish on the edge of the body and no issues besides that. I haven't weighed it yet, and don't have any neck dive issues cause I'm using my normal 4" suede strap. I got a set of roto 66's for it, but haven't put them on yet. I'll also be reading up on mods, especially for the jazz pup. Very tempted to get another another to slap some flats on.

Well I threw the Duncan design pickups from my other jag in. I like it better. The j is definitely an improvement. Really funky sounding with the j cranked. The dd p I think does not lean as much to the low end as the stock. I like the tone better for rock.

Good info. I think I'm making this one a rock machine for now and then the second will be for the Motown.

Mine is sitting in a box in my room. Arrived today. I'll try by end of night.

I don't care about padding, either. I just needed a bag to carry it in. The way I travel to gigs, no padding is really necessary.

After I ordered it, I later noticed in the MF reviews that the bag has a synthetic stink to it. At least that's what they were saying. Does your bag smell?

Yeah I read those reviews after I ordered it too. It had a synthetic smell last nite but not as bad as those reviewers insinuated and I didn't even notice any smell today. It looks so small in the case you'd never believe there was a Bass instead of a guitar in there. :)

Remember you said yours was 43" at first and so I measured mine again and it was only 42" like I thought? Then you measured yours again and it was 42 1/2". The bag specs on MF say 43" long though. That 1/2" would really make a difference on this bag. On mine there's only about 1/4" to spare. What's also strange is the discrepancy in weight between so many of these Basses.

You need to be careful reading those MF reviews. Although generally they are useful, the more reviews there are for a particular piece of gear, the better picture you can get of a that piece's quality, but you need to view certain individual reviews with care. Some reviews tend to be "off" for lack of a better word.
When researchng the Squier VM Jazz bass, I read the well over 200 user reviews and was left with a favorable enough immpression that I bought one, and I was quite happy with it. However, some reviews were not much more that "this bass rox!!" and some even had downright false info, like about a half dozen repeating the false rumor that the block markers were painted on.

Um, pretty good you ever play a vm jag? The pickups are a set... They give pretty equal readings on my cheapo analog meter. The j is jb102 ceramic and the p is pb101 alnico 5

I mean the stock set is serviceable, for what the price of the bass is. The stock j adds enough to give you a little bit of versatility over the solo p, but doesn't have that bite or cut you might be looking for in some situations. The p is a good pickup that I'll be hanging onto, but if you're someone who's coming from a p bass that you like to get a jag for the look or the short scale like me, I don't think its ridiculous to throw a different p in there.

If you're a kid starting out you probably don't know any better, but you've actually got a really decent sound. I like the way the stock pickups sounded with both cranked. But I definitely had some fun yesterday after installing the new set testing out the j solo on some disco nonsense. I haven't tried a whole lot of different j pu's, but that jb102 has stuck out since I tried out the vm jag. And over stock, gives you a lot more options.

In conclusion I would recommend a j upgrade at the least to anyone really looking to keep this bass around and play it often. It is not strictly necessary over stock, but I was very pleased with the results.

I see used Duncan sjb3's on the local cl regularly for $30. I have one and it's not bad but I prefer the jb102. I dunno if anyone can order them, but the pb101 comes up used a lot here and on eBay from people ripping them out of vm p's. For me "cost effective" pretty much means used.

Ever since we bought this bass for our son, it has looked oddly familiar to me. It took this picture for me to realize why:

In this picture, Owen is practicing. The shiny black pick guard is reflecting natural light from the venetian blinds. I saw that stripe pattern, and it hit me. "This thing looks like my old Tiesco bass!"

Now, that photo isn't my Tiesco bass; mine was similar but in sea foam green, and it was pretty beat up. The guitarist in my band bought it for me as a joke and we used to do gigs with really crappy guitars before we knew that was cool. The bass sounded like a**, as I recall, and we quickly sold it.

Still, that stripe pattern on the pick guard is cool. Might work on this bass just for giggles.

...sort of...
