Lucy. Thanks for doing the mod that everyone has been talking about doing and giving us the results! I'm definitely gonna do it on my Jaguar VM Regular. $56 is nothing for the only crucial upgrade these Jags need. I'm pretty sure I'll do it on the SS too since it's not fair to make my son endure the loud hissing when I don't have to. I also just ordered the Squier Jag P/J Active Special. The price was a steal and I couldn't resist it. I might turn it into a fretless or flip it with the free MF case I got that is Bassless now.

I dont understand why they don't do this stock. I had a peavey pj with a humcancelling j stock and it spoiled me. I play most of the time with just the p on but for the times I use both it makes a big difference. I probably wouldnt even bother to use the J pickup otherwise.

Well you're lucky. I hear noise if the J is on no matter what volume and what distance from amp. It does get much louder if I'm right next to my amp. It is there even with the tone turned off but get's much louder if I turn up the tone. My regular Jag does the same thing. With the tiny stages we sometimes play at I don't have the luxury of standing far from my amp, and if we mic it the sound man always says something about the buzz. Also, changing the J pickup is more about better sound from it too. I don't like the sound of the OEM J and even if it didn't buzz at all (all it seems to do is put more trebel in the sound so I usually have it turned off.

The buzz volume depends what room you're in, etc. It doesn't come through unless you're not playing, and even then my guitarists' class A amps make a lot more noise than a single j pickup. I was very interested in hum canceling j for the last two basses I've had, but upon researching I decided against it. I found people were dumping them because they just didn't have that growl or mojo or whatever, and I just figured that the noise was part of the package. It may bother me at home, but I just remind myself that it won't be heard live.

I have a 2004 Fender Custom Shop Jazz Bass and the Squier J Pickup sounds like a toy guitar compared to the Fender one. So I guess the solution is just get a REAL J Pickup instead and forget about the buzz. Make sense to me cuz sound is much more important.

Yeah the j pickup and the fact that the tuners have about a half-turn of play in them are what stand out to me. They could have fixed those for $300, but as long as you're short scale, why not appeal to the kiddos?

I just realized how much the Jag SS looks like my very first Bass that I bought in probably 1970for I think $50 at some L.A. pawnshop. I put Schaller tuners on it. I think it was a St. George or Ventura.

I think the dimarzio model j is about 6k. Need to double check.

Edit: yeah...the dimarzio model j is 6.82k

it depends on the pickup i think...some are growlier/snappier than others. a straight jazz bass definitely sounds best with true single coils but with a PJ things are different. P pickups typically have much higher output than a typical J pickup so it's harder to match them.
