Bought my ss Jag today. I was really REALLY on the fence on this purchase. Everytime I took an objective look at it there is no way this $169 bass will replace my $2000 ss Stambaugh. However, as a back up it will do me well. I have been using an SX ss Jazz that I generally quite like. Probably the main reason I bought the ss Jag to replace the sx j was the neck as the neck on the sx is still too sticky to my liking even though I used steel wool to sand it down. While that did make a big difference the ss Jag neck is much smoother. I'll be harvesting my SX to make mods to my Jag. I'll put the stock parts back on the SX and likely donate it to the school I work at.

List of mods that will be done:

HS ultralite tuners (already own)
dimarzio Model J pups (already own... yup the P is going)
replace the pickguard with a custom genuine rosewood version
eventually upgrade the bridge
add bridge cover (already own)

One thing I will want to do is get her a fret dressing as I like to do that with any new bass I get.

Anyway, sometimes I need a good back up bass such as when going on road trips, playing in difficult weather, going camping etc. Mainly though its what I will use when I want to bang around at home.

Why are you parting yours up? I Just opened up the box and inspected and played my new Sunburst $133 VM Jag P/J Active Special (don't anyone bother asking for the link for that price which Music123 price matched because I just checked and it isn't active anymore). It didn't even need a setup like my other two Jags and not an external flaw on it either. Haven't plugged it in yet.

So, sticky neck aside, who wins the SX v.s. SS Jag contest?

^ Definitely Jag. Better tuners, better neck, tighter neck pocket (which is super important to me). Overall the build quality is just noticeably better to me in so many ways. Plus I could look the bass over for a good deal of time vs rolling the dice via rondo mail order. I paid $169 which is a heck of a price for a bass in Canada.

I agree. I think these VM Jags really raised the bar at this price point. I've been an advocate of SX bargains, but with these VM Jags, I'd see no reason to go for an SX. I think the Jags are significantly above any SX I've had my hands on.

I finally had it with the stock tuners today. I don't have ultralights yet but I yanked the stockers from my other jag. Got the bottom holes to line up... Two screws per tuner... But the thing actually stays in tune now! I say it stays now... Not sure if I was ever able to really tune it before. Either way it's shaping up. I'll finally order ultralights and some different strings today.

That is so strange because I play my regular scale Squier Jag every night for at least an hour and it stays in tune fine. What's really strange is the strings on the new active Jag I got yesterday were all only a half step flat when I tuned it the first time hut itvwas also the only Jag that was set up well. I'm pretty sure these are the exact same tuners as my SS. However, I have noticed I can sometimes turn the tuner a tiny bit over and over and it doesn't change the pitch so there must be some play in them.

Did anyone ever figure out if the tuner holes are 11/16 or 7/16? I may have missed it.

I like to mod stuff , I wanted a jag shaped body and thats it so the rest is getting sold and building the body up.

That said i bought the shortie for my shortie girl friend who is barely 5 foot. She plays guitar in my band , has a sweet les paul and she really loves this bass its the first bass she has been able to really play , i really like it as well. I am debating another one if i see one on sale i will have to buy it
