I agree. There is almost no finish on the maple neck. One of my basses has a Tru-Oil finish on the neck, and we might do this, or just shoot some nitro on it and wet sand. Or maybe Tung Oil. Who knows? Another thought (and this is what we will probably do) is just leave it bare and let finger oil/shmutz give it a worn look over the years.


We don't notice the dive at all. My 10-year old son plays it sitting and standing up, and I asked him to let go with his left hand to see what happened. Nothing. When I play it, I don't notice it either. I don't dispute that it's a factor for some people, but we don't experience it at all.

As the neck is indeed finished, I don't think that would be a good idea, unless you remove the satin polyurethane finish on the neck first.

I tend to agree with you Mcfly on the E string anyway - It is a bit sloppy but I like the feel of the others.. So maybe I'll check out those deep talkers at some point - don't think I'm going to be spending any more money right now.

Here's my Squier Jaguar Modified Short Scale - black on black. (Sorry for the crappy photo quality). Purchased from Bass Emporium, Austin, TX.

I'm also showing how well it fits into my Ernie Ball/MusicMan gig bag. Don't know if this bag was designed in particular for short-scale basses, but it's a really great match.

Also showing my Comfort Strapp - Pro Bass Extra Long. I feel that this bass doesn't have neck dive so much as neck level - it really wants to hang parallel to the ground. So this strap, which has grabby material, easily lets me keep the neck tilted up at the angle I like.

That's a good idea. Removing the two middle ones would probably give you the most even representation. I would try it, but I pretty much hate the stock keys regardless. I've seen figures that put gotoh res-o-lites at 40g a pop, but I'm sure that has to be referring to the y shaped keys that I can't stand the look of. They are also hard to track down and almost twice the price. Although tempting because they are Smoother and higher ratio.

For $71.00 plus tax (Calif), it better be! Well the guitar case is only $79. but the Bass case is $79. @ MF.

Does it have a lot of padding? Actually I just need something to keep the Bass from getting accidently scratched when in my car.
Is it the guitar or Bass gig bag and how much was shipping? NM. I don't see any on ebay and I ordered another one from MF for $13. Hope it fits. Should.

I guess this is a little bit of devils advocate, but for me padding would be a way bigger concern than the extra 3" of room at the top... So just find a regular bass bag with nice padding. But I guess as they say, the fun is in the hunt.

Well I put some ultralite tuners on last night. It doesnt neck dive as severely now (goes horizontal instead of heading for the floor) but its still noticeable. Probably going to add weight at the bridge to see what happens. I do love that its so light though. Ordered some labella flats yesterday too. I'm almost tempted to buy another one of these - they are such a steal.

Ok so what's the deal with strings made for a Short Scale bass. Why can't you put regular length strings on and cut 'em off? Looking at the strings on the Jag I can see there is a step down on the A string but no difference on any of the others most notably the E string. So why does it matter? I can see the point of smaller winding around the post but that isn't happening with the E string so.... Please enlighten me.
I've been a long time fan of S.I.T. strings for my acoustic & electric guitars and was thinking I'd try the S.I.T. silencers on my bass.

Strange. The worse mine dives is horizontal with the stock tuners. Besides, why are all you guys so concerned with neck dive anyway? Are you constantly letting go of the Bass to sing or clap??

Which La Bella's did you get? I love the La Bella Flat Talker 105's I put on mine, and yeah, the Bass is a steal at the $144 I paid. $169 too! I like it stock and don't need any expensive fancy case or gig bag. My $13 gigbag will be waiting on the front porch when I get home today.

i got the LaBella DTF 760FL short scale - sounds like what you got too. i love labella flats.

It's the bass bag and it has a ton of padding. It's like a little fur coat inside there. Very plush.
