My Squier Standard Jazz - rewired, potted and shielded with upgraded wizard pickups (84s) and a self cut black pickguard - very pleased with it too. :)

I believe Ebonol is a hard plastic type material similar to Rosewood. It seemed pretty wear resistant and was very smooth. It also had a pretty good tone and mwah.

Very intriguing. Well, sorry I couldn't help you with the SX query, but thanks for the prompt reply on the fingerboard. Might have to track one down and try one. Been interested in a fretless for experimenting with for a while. And the mwah is essential!

Wikipedia is has info on literally everything...

Ebonol is an artificial material similar to ebony (Diospyros crassiflora), a black wood from Africa, which sometimes includes grey streaks. Ebonol is commonly used in place of ebony in the construction of stringed instruments, like fretless bass fingerboards, because it is easy to work with and resistant to forming grooves from roundwound strings.

BTW, I think it sounds great. I love the sound and feel of Ebanol.

Well, after months of testing it out, I think I can safely say that this Squier I bought off of Evilbay (after weeks of negotiation and $120 shipping) is something I can be proud of for as long as I live!
As you can see from that thread above, my reasons for going after this bass were pretty stupid, but I'm never gonna regret getting it. I'm not good enough to be able to tell what makes a $5000 bass so perfect, but to my ears this Squier still sounds better than any other bass at my music school. (Now if only I could learn how to lower the action without breaking the neck....)

Well I just recently put some "mods" on it. Thought it might be fun, but man what a HELL of a job that was... I initially bought 250k CTS pots and Quarter-pounder pickups, but the frackin pots wouldn't fit in the cavity so after hours of careful sanding and then sloppy-as-hell soldering, I found out the pickguard didn't fit anymore.
I thought "what the hell" and got that pearloid pickguard off of Evilbay. It was supposed to be "for Squiers!" but of course it still didn't fit when it finally came. Man was I pissed. :( I had to drill every screwhole, as well as the pot holes. As for the neck part, which wouldn't fit for ****, I took an exacto knife and went crazy. It looked so bad I had to cram aluminum foil in the blank cavities(all 15 of them). You can see how bad of a job I did if you look at the pics below, but thankfully it's not noticeable at first glance.... :D is it?:crying: Oh yeah the stock knobs didn't fit anymore either so I got some off of allparts. SOB pots were such a nightmare....


Ha.... well anyways what's important is that I still love my Squier to death. Now if I could get a member's number I can die a happy man. :smug:

Damn, does it really look that noticeably bad? :crying:

I decided to drill the pickguard instead because I didn't want to screw with the body. I didn't want to drill extra holes too close to the original ones, which might add up to become permanent craters. If I'm ever gonna drill holes into the body, it's gonna be for a Fenderish 13-hole pickguard. (or pickup/bridge covers)
Unfortunately, this 2-ply POS'll have to tide me over until I can get a proper custom job done sometime in the future... :(
