Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

Great thread...I've learned a good deal already! I have a Squier Affinity P-Bass, made in Indonesia (Cort factory I think) year 2000. I picked it up as a banger bass but have grown quite fond of it (especially the neck) and am looking into upgrades. I've already ordered the Gotoh 201 bridge, am still looking at pickup choices and would also like to replace the tuners (they seem a little loose feeling, especially the G tuner). It seems like Hipshot HB1 or HB7 would be the best choice...has anyone upgrade the tuners on a Squier Affinity P Bass that is around the same age and make? I would like to do no drilling if possible...any direct replacements? I'm not picky about the peg head style as long as it fits easily.
I've given up on replacing the crappy pickguard after reading some of the adventures on here with Squier Affinity pickguards...might look into a custom at some point later on, although the white pickguard/baltic blue finish doesn't look too bad.

There are vintages of the Affinities that have larger bobbins and smaller ones. If you've got the smaller bobbin machines in yours now, then you will likely have to bore out the holes in the head to accept the bigger ones.

I have a Q&A post that if you like, will show some of the differences and adaptability factors as they come in from people making changes to their Affinity Ps. Let me know.

FYI: my Affinity P has bobbins that are 0.550" in diameter.

My MiM Jazz has bobbins that are slightly smaller in diameter: 0.542". Eight thousandths isn't much.

Projection above the headstock on the string-side are: 0.721" for the Affinity and 0.655" for the MiM Jazz.

The head thicknesses themselves are so close as to be negligible on both the MiM and the Affinity.

Let me make a quick chart for these dimensions - Remember these are MY basses, not necessarily the whole run of that particular model:::::

AFFINITY TUNER BOBBINS: (1998½ CD)

Diameter: 0.550"
Projection: 0.721"
Headstock Thickness: 0.584"
Exposed Gear Diameter: 0.741"

MiM TUNER BOBBINS (2009 MZ):
Diameter: 0.542"
Projection: 0.655"
Headstock Thickness: 0.585"
Exposed Gear Diameter: 0.810"

VM-JAZZ TUNER BOBBINS: (2009½ ICS)
Diameter: 0.550"
Projection: 0.730"
Headstock Thickness: 0.573"
Exposed Gear Diameter: 0.862" (.050" larger than the MiM Jazz!)

VM-JAGUAR BOBBINS: (2010 ICS)
Diameter: 0.550"
Projection: 0.717"
Headstock Thickness: 0.600" (This extra thickness might be from the black paint too)
Exposed Gear Diameter: 0.810"

Some very interesting results there!

Finished the changes to my Squier Deluxe Active V
The only perfect fit on those is the control plate.
Pickguard and knobs have to be modified to work.

Before, in process and completed.

The "inlays" are the vinyl decals from Creative Cuts. I'd like it done for real but that'd surely cost more than the bass.

Wow:) That looks killer!

Is the headstock paint sanded off?

I finally confirmed this to be true. A VM fretless Jazz will take an MIM pickguard without serious reshaping of the guard if you swap to an MIM control plate. I did have to drill new holes for the control plate.

So, it turns out that on my '07 Affinity Jazz, built in China, Fender MIM pickguards are a near perfect fit, no drilling of new holes, a nice fit to the control plate, and only minor sanding of the neck pocket.

Like many others, I've been interested in a pickguard for the VM fretless. I haven't done one yet, but I think MIM guards are OK. It fits perfect around the neck and neck pickup, but the problem is the control plate. It has a different shape on the upper point than the standard MIM control plate. Some brave folks here have sanded the guard to fit the existing plate, but my recommendation would be to swap out the existing plate for an MIM plate. This will probably involve drilling new holes for it, but I think that's better than reshaping a pickguard, but YMMY.

Thanks for all of the great information...that was more than I could find even after much googling! I wouldn't be afraid of drilling out the holes for tuners as long as the difference in diameter is failry small, which seems to be the case on the Squiers.
So how are you digging that VM Jaguar? I've had my eyes on them and have been trying to decide between that or trying to find a MIJ Fender Jaguar...I'll search for some threads on here for some feedback.

Great Site!!!

The VM-Jag is all I could want for it's design - and certainly gave me mucho more than I thought it would for voices, adaptability and tonality.

Now - those descriptive words are really lacking is any qualitative numerical values - but to me the ability to blend both a P and a J and have the volume stay right up where it is supposed to be in any position of the knobs is an outstanding achievement by Squier.

Even my personal bass-guru at GC was impressed with the ability to growl and remain clear and precise in tone and response. The attack is clean with no mud at all and the sustain goes on for a l-o-n-g time.

What I firmly believe is that if one puts flats or semis on it, it will lose [DEL]a lot[/DEL] gobs of the character it already has and for which I bought it in the first place.

Staying with some relatively 'bright' strings may be the best thing to do and in no way would I ever recommend a Hi-Mass bridge to suck the lows out of it!

I tend to grab it first off the wall much of the time as it can really play any part I want from deep-down Motown to serious crystal clear funky slap - which I do VERY little!

Oddly - this is the ONLY set of Fender 7250s that are still running on any of my Squiers or Fenders, as they generally suck big ones on all the others - but they just sonically FIT here and I am a-feared that (make that 'I know") that Fender cannot replicate those MiI red-silked 7250s, so I will switch to Roto RS45s when these die.

I hope that day never comes <sigh> but the Rotos are so-o-o close that I may not complain much.

Aesthetically - I cannot wish for a different combination of looks and colors and the Tort just caps it off. The black color is so deep you can get to your first knuckle of your finger in it.

A Jazz neck and the semi-dampening quality of the rosewood and the very HOT p'ups and the stacked V/T knobs make for a very successful mashup for a great bass that never existed.

I just play - wax - play some more - wax some more and generally just leave it alone as it is a great singer and has a voice that even my wife can recognize.

I'm thinking of the Aguilar AG 4J-60.

I'm also thinking of the AG 5J-60 for my Affinity Jazz V. Have to keep rolling the tone knob back all the way (too trebly), so maybe I need to change the pots as well? (from 500 to 250)

Anyone has done this?

I put a white fender standard jazz pickguard on my squier cv jazz.

The pickup hole was a little off and I had to file the screw cutouts a few millimeters wider.
It's also a couple millimeters narrower than the control plate.

Still looks good though

Tried a VM Jag neck & a mighty mite neck on my p bass special (standard series) but it's not happening. The neck pocket doesn't taper enough to be anywhere near snug. :crying:

Hmm I was able to fit a fretless VM jazz neck onto a squier affinity P bass body , took me actually hitting it into the pocket with a rubber mallet since it was so tight........if you do this you chance chipping the paint but its already road worn and chipped.

I have noticed fitting squier necks can vary one to another.

Just wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the direction of a website for pick guards. I'm after a MIM jazz guard for my Squier affinty (I heard MIM are the closest fit).
I've tried WDMusic.com but the international shipping costs were a little to much for me (I live in Australia and it would have cost me $110 US for shipping, over double the cost of the pick guard).

Any help with this would be appreciated.

I would suggest trying your luck with cheap ones on eBay instead. I am getting a P bass guard for $13.20 with $10 international shipping. Its worth a punt, I reckon. Will update when it arrives if it fits.
