Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

I've also changed quite a lot in my Affinity P-Bass so far and it's starting to be relatively decent, just some setup issues still remaining that need more work. Here's what I've done:

  • Changed the stock pickup to a Seymour Duncan SPB-3, sounds "alright" now
  • Installed a new, black & white pickguard to replace the ugly stock one
  • Swapped the factory, chrome pot knobs into black ones
  • Bolted on a new Gotoh 201 bridge, not that much difference to the stock though
  • Currently playing with D'Addario Chromes strings, will return to Rotosound RS77's in the future as they're more to my liking than these

Still some original parts in this one, but not too many of 'em. Will also change more parts in the future:

  • Install a Mighty Mite, maple fretboard neck (preferrably a Jazz one) as the original one seems a bit meh right now, could simply be a setup issue but not yet sure
  • Shorten some wiring as the pickguard doesn't quite fit 100% now, and also solder new CTS (?) pots on
  • Shield the cavities with aluminum/copper tape to eliminate the annoying buzzing/hum I get when haven't got my fingers on the strings etc.

So yeah, this bass ain't nowhere near finished yet. Might even give the body a respray sometime in the future (mmm... yellow), and fix the drill holes etc. at the same time. Not to mention hopefully getting a 2nd bass as well, but too soon to tell yet.

I'm considering replacing the pickups in my Classic Vibe 60's precision. What's the general consensus on the stock pickups? I found them pretty indestinct for fast parts but really nice when a song called for a wide sound. I think I want quarter pounders or something. Any ideas?

I have the Squier CV 50's P, whick is awesome IMHO. I was wondering if anyone knows of a preamp that would fit in its tiny control cavity? I know the aggie OBP-2 preamp can be wired in a 2 knob configuration (volume-stacked bass/treble), but will the preamp module and battery fit under the control plate?

Hello! I have a V.M.J. and it has a Agulair OB 2 installed to the stock pups. It sounds amazing and yes everything goes in the cavity. Is the cavity od a CV 50's P smaller?

Anybody knows if CTS pots drop right in the Jazz CV control plate ? And do the stock knobs fit well on CTS pots ?

An update. I also found that the CTS pots did not fit in the VM control cavity, either. I had to use my Dremel to make the cavity bigger around the neck volume pot and widen it along the treble side in order to clear the CTS pots. Obviously, they only make the cavity big enough to fit the small pots. My guess is that it might be the same for the CV.

I should add that I opened up the control plate holes with a half-round needle file, and used my Dremel to make clearance for the CTS pots. My VM Jazz is back together with 75 RI Jazz Pickups, CTS pots (250K), standard Jazz knobs and Switchcraft jack. It sounds GREAT. A bunch of trouble, but well worth it.

Just wondering about this guys/gals,.The stock pups on the Squire VJ and the Squire V F Less sound great, but some people do change them. What is the general concensis for replacement of these pickups (non active please). Thanks. L.Potter

Laurie, what drove me was that I was looking for a fatter sound than the OEM pickups, plus I wanted to swap the pots and jack for Fender American quality hardware if I could. I decided to do it at the same time, so I could get the pieces, solder them as a unit, and install them together. Just easier that way.

Now if I could find some "drop-in" tuners...... :help:

Thanks for your responce, I take it that the tuners that you used in your 50's Vibe won't work?

CVs and VMs are different, for example the hb7 tuners are drop in on the CVs but not on the VMs. It seems that nobody here tried the pots/jack/cap mod on the CV jazz, I guess I'll have to order the parts and find out myself if it works out !

So you really did notice an improvement in sound ? Can you describe how ?

I've ordered the parts for my CV P bass. Should be here later this week I hope. I'm not going to change the pickup so it'll be interesting to see what the difference is.

HB-1 tuners, NOT HB-7s, were a drop-in on my 50s CV Precision (see a page or two back). They might be on a CV Jazz, also, as both are made in China.

The change in my VM Jazz is that it now has a the tone of a 75 RI Jazz. Fatter, smoother, not that bright. I basically installed the electrical guts of a 75 RI, so it should!!!!

FWIW, I used a .022 MF cap, just like the Fender schematic for the 75 RI called for. I'm glad I did, the sound would have been too dark for my taste otherwise.

In keeping with the thread theme, the 75 RI pickups ARE a drop-in on the VM Jazz. No issues at all as long as you use the covers that come with them (the original VM bridge pup has different pole spacing than standard).
