Squier Vintage Modified Jazz 5er????

True... Lots of people rave about the strings on the Indonesian squiers, but I still have them on my VM70's and for me, they're kinda 'eh'... Just haven't gotten around to switching them out.

Now I have to decide if I want to make a push on selling my VM70's this weekend to get the V ordered sooner than later, or just hang on to it for a while longer and order the V at the end of the month... Hurm.

I had 'em on a stock Deluxe, I definitely remember the B string being junk.

Actually, the only Squier I bought that had good strings, the shop installed TI's on for kicks before I bought it.

Either way, Id definately say try before buy. I was really excited when I saw this in the shop as I'd been gassing for either this or the delux active V and it was a massive dissapointment. Just my $0.02

Flea - thanks for the feedback on the instrument. I def will have to try before I buy. But I'm glad the fit and finish seemed pretty good to you (at least I inferred as much from your quick review)

I would be putting my set of Chromes on this bad boy if I got it. This would def become a fingerstyle groovy bass (would also kill for a proper split coil Squier P5 for this too) and I would leave the rare slap or two for my Lakland.

No worries bud, any other questions about it?

Yeah, the finish on the neck was not too sticky, pretty fast and I thought everything fit as it should. Nothing lose, hardware was fine and asthetically quite nice. As a jazz bass, for somebosy expecting some growl, this didnt fit the bill. But as you say, some flats and warm pups would make one mean groover, quite p bass ish, if you know what I mean?

No other questions really - I think feel and all that stuff comes down to personal taste.

It is a little surprising to not get good growl from a Jazz. Especially w Duncan pu's in there too - aren't they usually a little more aggressive sounding?

And thanks for the compliment! I love that bass. It will always be 'the one' for me despite what my GAS induced idiocy makes me chase after. But it is my go to bass for pretty much everything, and I will never sell it.

I do need a better fiver - I have an SX 5 string P (has 2 single coil pu's tho a la the squier P5). It's... ok. It could use a little more mid range complexity and 19 mm spacing if you asked me (which is what I hope the VM J5 could be). I don't slap much, and I don't have huge hands, but even 18 mm feels a little pinched to me. So I'm looking at this, Fender Am St P5, and the Lakland Skyline 55-64 or 55-60

Either a P or J 5 string is in my future, and hopefully soon.

Yeah as you say, people like different things.

The lack of growl from the bass, considering a) its a jazz and b) it has duncans, made me suspect id been handed a dud.

Do you mind if I ask how much it set you bakc? The one in your avatar that is :)

Its awesome you've found the one! I've only been playing bass for 14 months or so, but I play at least 5 hours a day and because of that If something isnt right for me, ticks and nags become exaccerbated because of how much I play. However, I tried out an Ibanez SR370M (24frets, 4strings, maple body and fboard, active) a couple days back and immediately had to have it. Told the shop to hold it, and Im picking it uptuesday! Really think this is the one! Never would have guessed an Ibanez as out of the basses Ive tried, Ive only liked Jazzes, Jags, MMs and a Squier 50s P ( I have a MIM jazz And a fleabass back home) so this was very different! (i think the burst finish managed to keep my inner 'trad taste nazi' under sontrol :p )

As for a 5er, Ive heard nothing but praise for the Squier Deluxe Active 5er, but havnt tried it myself.

Again, sorry for spelling etc, still cant use this ipad!

I PMd you about what I paid for it and ended up rambling about how I decided it was the one.

For more assorted fun, here's a post I made a while back about how I almost lost the bass to a car fire a few years ago (and my life too, but that's not relevant here ;))

First of all, good on ya for dedicating yourself that much to practice. I wish I had done that when I started.

Second, there is nothing wrong with finding 'the one' sitting in the Ibanez section of your music megamart. They're good sounding, versatile basses, and are a great bang for the buck. I had a few Ibby 5ers back in the day - in fact my first bass was a cheap Ibanez 5 string Jazz clone (I believe it had 19 mm string spacing incidentally) which I regrettably don't have anymore. Great bass, I wish they still made them in that config. But bottom line, price and the name on the headstock don't matter - tone, feel, and (for most people I would think) aesthetics trump all.

oh, and no pic, no (possibly the penultimate) bass :p

Yeah I'm beginning to wish Id started bass earlier in life! I played piano from a ypung age but I feel bass a lot more.

Im no brand snob, frankly its all down to tone feel and looks. As you say.

Oh rest assured Ill be taking pics when Im back home. Some family shots are called for! :D

Don't worry, I talk more about the bass in that post than anything. Wouldn't want to bore anyone w the other details. :D

I actually started out playing piano from a young age, took a few years of lessons, and then taught myself bass starting around your age. Still play both, but like you said, I feel bass a lot more. I consider myself a bassist first and foremost. It's interesting to see someone starting down a path similar to mine.

And I live in Jersey too. Although, I would gamble that our accents are a little different... :D

Pffft your so called 'real life' is of no consequence to me. ;)

Thats literally the exact story for me. Piano lessons 4-14, guitar at 8 for about 7 months and flute after that for just as long. The latter 2 failed dysmally. Started teaching myself bass april last year and I've taken a few practical lessons and started theory now :)

Original jersey is automatically cooler ;)

But only if they place the pickups at the correct position for a Jazz, unlike the Jazz V DeLuxe (I bought one of those recently), and maintain the 19mm string spacing.
