Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

Just pulled my VMP5 out to play. Very content with the M&V Guitars Atlas pick up I installed in it.

Is that the pick-up with one large magnet per string? Is it s more modern sound?

It probably is a little more modern sounding due to a little less mids, and slightly more output. I like it. I found that the standard pickup gets a little too honky for my tastes as my strings get older. YMMV etc

My 2013 VMP-5 is in, setup and it's ready to be picked up which I'll do this weekend. I asked the store to take a photo of it so I could get a good feel for its condition (I bought it sight unseen). Gotta say that from the looks of it in this photo it seems to have seen very little use.

I had a set of TI flats in my used string collection that looked new. I installed them on the P5 and it sounds great. Made a few adjustments to the set up and it is good to go.

I also have a Fender Player Precision 4 string with LaBella flats on it and compared the tone of the two basses. The Fender does sound a bit better to me but it has an alder body and LaBella strings as compared to the basswood body and TI strings on the Squier. The Fender has a Pau Ferro fingerboard and that probably adds to the tone. They both sound great, mind you but the Fender has a certain sweetness in the tone that I like. Two great P basses really.

My mods so far :

• Sire Marcus Miller heavy mass 5-string bridge (see)
• Retainer bar over the 5 strings (it really improves the B-string)
• Mini-CTS pots, vintage 0.047uF cap, and a Switchcraft jack
• Got it with GHS Precision flats, then had Chromes on it, and now d'Addario Nickelwounds

No need to change the tuning keys nor the PU, IMHO.
Low action, no buzzing.
I play it straight into a 2006 Markbass Mini CMD121P combo.

Wish list : gold anodized pickguard.

I have a gold anodized pick guard on my sunburst VMP5. I bought it off TideSwing (from the TB classifieds), it was pricey but it looks great (my '57 Fiver). Thanks TideSwing.

I got an OW used for 300€ a couple of weeks ago and is really a great bass. The previous owner changed the pickup for a fender standard one. I have the old VM pickup as well so maybe someday I’ll just give that a try just for fun! Here a picture of it beside my beloved MM Sterling.

I put US electronics in mine including an American Standard pu. IMO it is not worth the trouble or expense. It does sound a little better now but the improvement is slight.

I see. I might then as well just try to sell the original VM pickup.

Mine keeps good company too, it's all stock even though I have American electronics, PUP, and pickguard. No reason to change anything unless something breaks.

I just found out they discontinued this model. That's so sad... for some. Fortunately I bought one new when they were going for $299.

That works out to about $300 US dollars. That is fair if it is in good shape. I paid $310 delivered for mine and it was in an older Fender hard case but think I got an exceptional deal.

I'll probably throw in some CTS pots, decent cap, might change the pickup but I'm willing to give the stock pu a go first.

First order of business is the tuners.

The tuners are fine IMO. I changed the PU in mine to a Fender American Standard, pots are CTS, knobs are Fender Precision, Switchcraft jack and an orange drop cap. Virtually no change in the tone was the result. The highs sound a little bit sweeter to me but that is it.

My advice is to put on a nice set of strings, do a good set up and enjoy the bass as is. Squier hit a complete home run with the VM P 5.

Tuners on mine are fine, the bridge could use an upgrade and the pots/tonecap will help.
the pup was very similar to the USA i have in it now.
