So you thought it was dark with the 250k, and changed to the 500k? If so, I'll just leave it alone Remember, I've just got the 500k volume pot, with the Stellartone Tonestyler replacing the tone pot, so my harness is probably different ...

Mine was a special case- stock pots were both beyond the outer edge of tolerance, down around 200K. Bled quite a bit of treble off.

I was re-wiring for a PJ install, and thought “what the heck, I’ll try some 500K’s”.

More proof that what you think is caused by mojo or lumber, could be some other factor that you overlooked...

OK...NBD for me! Finally located a 2013 VM P bass 5 string that looks mint. Can't wait to play it. I have read all the way through this thread and found a million opinions, but I will ask anyway. The first 'mods' that I plan are to lightly sand down the finish on the back of the neck, and new strings. For the classic 'P bass' sound, what strings do you recommend. Since I'm a newby please give brand, model and sizes of strings if you can. Thank you!

Those are two good mods! I currently run DR Low-Riders on mine for church, but for flats I would recommend the DR Legend Flatwounds, which I have used, or the Labella 760FL-B, which seem to garner alot of praise.

P-Basses have seen and done it all.

What you call the “classic P-Bass sound” depends on your demographic.

If you like 60’s and early 70’s pop (Joe Osborne, Carol Kaye), a pick and a dead set of Labella or Fender flats is just the ticket. Careful EQ is required to minimize the pick noise.

For Motown a la Jamerson, keep the flats and go finger-style. Roll the tone back at least half way.

Classic rock is all over the place. Finger-style with dead flats and the tone wide open for a sharp, flat thunk will get you Peter Cetera with Chicago, early Doobie brothers, etc.

A lot of harder rock was performed while beating pretty hard on a set of Rotosound stainless rounds. Mild amp distortion is welcomed.

Punk should always be played on a P-bass with nickel rounds and a nylon pick. A long strap (knee level or lower preferred) and maximum attitude are mandatory.

Nylon tapes are good for jazz, and also give a nice pseudo-acoustic vibe for unplugged sessions.

New Wave a la Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello is usually rounds and a pick, with scooped mids and just a touch of crunch up top...

Here's mine. I got it a couple years ago. I added DR Highbeams, an Omega bass bridge, made a brass nut for it, installed cts pots with a 100mf pio cap, Fender barrel knobs, switchcraft jack, sanded, restained and cleared the headstock and gave it a thorough set up. Next are pickups but havent decided which ones.

Oh yeah...gonna cut a creame MOP pickguard for it as well. I have the sheet ready.

The Omega IS a nice bridge but the Hipshot Kickass is nicer, with the adjustable spacing.

the omega was available first! but was NOT available when i did mine. The Fender is "ok" but i have an Omega with the saddles from Hipshot on my Cort GB75 JH.

USA P5's i had some Reed James Neo's for a bit but they were too modern (scooped)
